Posterior arch defects of the atlas: significance in trauma and literature review.

Neck pain and stiffness after trauma can be caused by congenital defects in the posterior arch of the atlas. A case is described followed by a description of the pathology, classification, diagnosis and treatment of such defects. The importance of differentiating such defects from fractures in an acute trauma situation is discussed.

Scoliosis in children with anterior chest wall deformities.

An association between anterior chest wall deformities and scoliosis is described in the literature but is poorly defined. It appears that only approximately 4% to 5% of patients with severe anterior chest wall deformities have scoliosis of sufficient magnitude to warrant evaluation and observation by a spinal deformity physician. The relationship between anterior chest wall deformity and scoliosis is most clear in patients with Marfan syndrome. Marfan patients with scoliosis are at high risk for progression of deformity to unacceptable levels and have historically not responded well to brace

Orthopaedic management in four cases of mucolipidosis type III.

Four patients with mucolipidosis type III, three of them brothers, were seen initially in the first two decades of life. Their main symptoms were carpal tunnel syndrome, trigger fingers and generalized joint stiffness. Radiographs showed spinal deformities and hip dysplasia, but these were not causing pain. Carpal tunnel syndrome was treated surgically but joint stiffness and hip and knee contractures were managed by physiotherapy. Up to the age of 24 none of these patients has had pelvic osteotomy for hip dysplasia; this operation, not yet reported in mucolipidosis type III, may eventually be

Cemented total hip arthroplasty in a patient with alpha-mannosidosis: a case report.

Mannosidosis is an extremely rare genetic disease occurring due to deficiency of the lysosomal enzyme, alpha-mannosidase. Patients with this disorder often suffer from musculoskeletal abnormalities and muscular weakness leading to joint destruction and severe morbidity along with other major systems involvement. We present here such a case of a 27-year-old male that highlights the challenges in management of hip joint destruction secondary to Mannosidosis.

The short-term effects of spiral stabilization on human posture correction.

BACKGROUND: Changes in human posture directly impact the structures of various body parts, often leading to musculoskeletal disorders. While identifying suitable treatments for pain associated with long-term postural abnormalities is important, preventing such conditions is demonstrably a superior solution. Spiral stabilization, known for its practical application, has proven effective in treating low back pain. However, its efficacy in correcting human posture warrants further validation. METHODS: A total of 71 participants with abnormal body posture, with a mean age of 33.68 ± 6.78 years, w

Application of a Ridden Horse Pain Ethogram and Its Relationship with Gait in a Convenience Sample of 60 Riding Horses.

A Ridden Horse Pain Ethogram (RHpE) comprising 24 behaviours has been developed to facilitate the identification of musculoskeletal pain. The aim was to further test the RHpE by its application to a convenience sample (n = 60) of sports horses and riding school horses in regular work and assumed by their owners to be working comfortably. All horses performed a purpose-designed dressage-type test of 8.5 min duration in walk, trot and canter, with their normal rider. The RHpE was applied retrospectively to video recordings acquired in a standardised fashion. Seventy-three percent of horses were

Detecting degenerative changes in myotonic murine models of Duchenne muscular dystrophy using high-frequency ultrasound.

OBJECTIVE: Ultrasound imaging is an economical and noninvasive technique for studying musculoskeletal diseases such as Duchenne muscular dys … t achievable with lower-frequency clinical scanners. METHODS: Using HFU, we were able to visualize musculoskeletal abnormalities as hyperechoic lesions within the dystrophic muscle. To validate the imaging findings, fiducial markers were placed in close proximity to lesions under HFU guidance. The nature of the lesion was then investigated histologically. This was repeated in …

Prediction of lethal pulmonary hypoplasia by means fetal lung volume in skeletal dysplasias: a three-dimensional ultrasound assessment.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to assess the capacity of three-dimensional ultrasound (3DUS) for predicting lethality in fetuses with skeletal dysplasia. METHODS: Twenty-four fetuses between 20 and 32 weeks of gestation were assessed. Bilateral lung volume scans were performed three times in each fetus during one ultrasound session. The virtual organ computer-aided analysis method was used to obtain a sequence of six sections of each lung around a fixed axis, and a rotation angle of 30° was adopted. Fetal lung volume measurements were analyzed according to the reference range. After bir

Focal Bone Marrow Lesions: A Complication of Ultrasound Diathermy.

Ultrasound diathermy is widely used for the treatment of musculoskeletal disorders and other soft tissue injuries. Its use as a therapeutic modality is believed to be safe, with very few reported complications. Here, we report two patients who developed focal bone marrow abnormalities after receiving ultrasound diathermy. Both patients' magnetic resonance (MR) evaluations revealed linear subchondral bone lesions of the superolateral humeral head similar to those in osteonecrosis. The patients' symptoms subsequently improved, and available follow-up MR evaluation revealed near complete resoluti

Ultrasound Findings on Hands and Wrists of Patients with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus: Relationship with Physical Examination.

Diagnosis of synovitis/tenosynovitis by physical examination can be difficult. Ultrasound (US) can be an effective tool for the evaluation of joint involvement in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). This study will describe musculoskeletal findings by US in SLE patients and the evaluation of their correlation with physical examination. SLE patients underwent clinical/sonographic evaluation of hand/wrists. In total, 896 joints were evaluated: at least 1 change on physical examination was found in 136 joints and at least 1 US abnormality was found in 65 of 896 joints. Out of the 65 joints with U

Musculoskeletal deformities of Alström syndrome-a review of 55 cases.

INTRODUCTION: Alström syndrome (ALMS) is an ultra-rare metabolic disorder caused by biallelic loss-of-function in the Alms1 gene which encodes a ubiquitously expressed centrosomal protein of the primary cilium. Dual sensory defects, several metabolic and hormonal dysfunctions are frequent in ALMS. Increased musculoskeletal deformities have been observed, though these aspects have not been systematically reviewed. This study characterises the anthropometric, clinical, genetic and imaging features of bone deformities in a large UK cohort with ALMS and describes the details of first documented su

Narrow genetic diversity in germplasm from the Guinean and Sudano-Guinean zones in Benin indicates the need to broaden the genetic base of sweet fig banana (Musa acuminata cv Sotoumon).

Sweet fig (M. acuminata cv. Sotoumon) is an economically important dessert banana in Benin, with high nutritional, medicinal, and cultural values. Nevertheless, its productivity and yield are threatened by biotic and abiotic stresses. Relevant knowledge of the genetic diversity of this economically important crop is essential for germplasm conservation and the development of breeding programs. However, very little is known about the genetic makeup of this cultivar in Benin. To advance the understanding of genetic diversity in sweet fig banana germplasm, a Genotype-By-Sequencing (GBS) was perfo

Pectus Arcuatum: A Pectus Unlike Any Other.

BACKGROUND: Pectus arcuatum is often mistaken for a type of pectus carinatum. However, pectus arcuatum is a unique clinical form of pectus caused by premature obliteration of the sternal sutures (manubrial sternum, four sternebrae and xiphoïd process), whereas pectus carinatum is due to abnormal growth of the costal cartilage. In order to better describe pectus arcuatum, we analysed the files of patients with pectus arcuatum followed in our centers. METHODS: Multicenter retrospective study of young patients' files diagnosed with pectus arcuatum. RESULTS: The clinical diagnosis of pectus arcu
