Efficacy and safety of low-concentration atropine combined with orthokeratology for children with myopia: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.

BACKGROUND: Myopia in children has become increasingly prevalent worldwide, resulting in greater medical expenditures and a higher prevalence of retinal complications associated with high myopia, thereby significantly impairing quality of life. The use of orthokeratology and low-concentration atropine eye drops for myopia management has seen a notable rise in recent years. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to evaluate the efficacy and safety of orthokeratology combined with low-concentration atropine for the treatment of myopia in children through a meta-analysis. METHODS: A comprehensive search was

Topical review: Potential mechanisms of atropine for myopia control.

Atropine is effective at slowing myopia progression in children, but the mechanism of action by which it controls myopia remains unclear. This article is an evidenced-based review of potential receptor-based mechanisms by which atropine may act to slow the progression of myopia. The rising number of individuals with myopia worldwide and the association between myopia and vision-threatening ocular pathologies have made myopia control treatments one of the fastest growing areas of ophthalmic research. High-concentration atropine (1%) is the most effective treatment for slowing myopia progression

Effect of Cycloplegia on Refractive Error Measure in Chinese School Students.

PURPOSE: To determine differences in cycloplegic vs. non-cycloplegic refractive error and factors associated with these differences in Chinese school students. METHOD: In this cross-sectional school-based study, refractive error was measured in school students using a NIDEK autorefractor before and after administration of 0.5% tropicamide. Spherical equivalent (SER) in diopters (D) was calculated as sphere plus half cylinder. SER differences before vs. after cycloplegia were evaluated using mean, standard deviation (SD), 95% limits of agreement. Univariable and multivariable regression models

Additive effect of atropine eye drops and short-term retinal defocus on choroidal thickness in children with myopia.

Atropine eye drops and myopic retinal defocus each slow progression of myopia (short-sight). They also cause thickening of the choroid, and it has been suggested that the thickening is a precursor for reduced eye growth and slowed myopia progression. We investigated whether choroidal thickening due to optical defocus would add to thickening due to atropine when both were applied simultaneously. Addition would suggest that combining the two clinical treatments may improve efficacy of myopia control. We studied 20 children receiving 0.3% atropine daily for myopia control, over a period of 6 mont

Systemic effects of ophthalmic cyclopentolate on body weight in neonatal mice.

BACKGROUND: Cyclopentolate is standardly used in ophthalmologic examinations of neonates to facilitate screening for retinopathy of prematurity. Reports of systemic effects have raised concerns of an increased risk of feeding intolerance after the examinations. OBJECTIVES: The goal of this study was to evaluate systemic concentrations of cyclopentolate after ophthalmic administration, as well as assess changes in weight as an indirect measure of alteration in feeding. METHODS: Neonatal mice were randomized into three groups to simulate a neonatal model for ophthalmic medication administratio

Duration and effect of single-dose atropine: paralysis of accommodation in penalization treatment of functional amblyopia.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Atropine dilates the pupil and paralyzes the ciliary muscle accommodation, blurring vision, and therefore is an effective penalization of the sound eye in the treatment of functional amblyopia of the other eye. The degree of blur induced is a function of the amount of the patient's uncorrected hyperopia and the distance from the eye of the viewed material or object. Another factor determining effectiveness of atropine penalization is the duration of the effect of the atropine. It is the purpose of this study to investigate these factors. METHODS: Six normal children un

Wavefront analysis in eyes with accommodative spasm.

PURPOSE: To investigate changes of spherical aberration in eyes with accommodative spasm. DESIGN: Case reports. METHODS: Four eyes of two patients with accommodative spasm were studied. Ocular spherical aberration was measured with a Hartmann-Shack wavefront aberrometer for the central 4-mm zone. RESULTS: The root mean square values of spherical aberration were negative (-0.086 +/- 0.026 microm root mean square). However, when the spasm of accommodation was cured or treated with a cycloplegic agent, the value shifted toward positivity (0.025 +/- 0.004 microm root mean square). CONCLUSIONS:

Biometric investigation of changes in the anterior eye segment during accommodation.

Non-invasive biometry of the anterior structures of the human eye can be performed with unprecedented precision of 8-10 microns and a resolution of approximately 9 microns by partial coherence interferometry, which has the potential to assess the effect of cycloplegia on the ocular components of the anterior eye segment, to further improve the precision to 1-2 microns by the use of these agents and to quantify the amount of residual accommodations in different states of cycloplegia. In addition, the anterior chamber depth, the thickness of the crystalline lens, their changes during accommodati

Giant Prolactin-Secreting Pituitary Adenoma: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Prolactinomas are the most common functional pituitary adenomas in the pediatric population, though they remain rare overall. Male adolescents often present with larger and more aggressive tumors than female adolescents, with delayed symptoms such as visual disturbances, headaches, and hypogonadism due to the absence of early hormonal signs. We report the case of a 15-year-old previously healthy male patient who presented with a one-month history of severe frontal headache, followed by blurred vision and vomiting. On examination, he exhibited bilateral mydriatic pupils unresponsive to light, l

In-Depth Evaluation of Saliency Maps for Interpreting Convolutional Neural Network Decisions in the Diagnosis of Glaucoma Based on Fundus Imaging.

Glaucoma, a leading cause of blindness, damages the optic nerve, making early diagnosis challenging due to no initial symptoms. Fundus eye images taken with a non-mydriatic retinograph help diagnose glaucoma by revealing structural changes, including the optic disc and cup. This research aims to thoroughly analyze saliency maps in interpreting convolutional neural network decisions for diagnosing glaucoma from fundus images. These maps highlight the most influential image regions guiding the network's decisions. Various network architectures were trained and tested on 739 optic nerve head imag
