Severe Vaginal Myiasis: Successful Management With Ivermectin.

Myiasis refers to infestation of living animals or humans by maggots or fly larvae. Urogenital myiasis is a rare condition that is linked to poor sanitary conditions and limited access to healthcare and with few published case reports. Here, we describe the case of a 67-year-old homeless woman with multiple comorbidities, who presented with extensive vaginal myiasis requiring inpatient management with ivermectin, ceftriaxone, and metronidazole and daily larvae extraction and debridement. The relevance of this case is providing a report of a successful management with ivermectin of a case of se…

Wound Myiasis in Severe Venous Stasis Ulcer.

Although myiasis infestation of wounds presents with significant psychological discomfort to patients, studies have shown that it can be beneficial in the management of recalcitrant ulcers resistant to standard management. Here we report a patient with persistent ulcers unresponsive to standard management who was lost to follow-up for five months and presented with ''maggots in his wound''. This however proved beneficial to the patient as the ulcer showed healthy granulation tissue on presentation and improved healing on follow-up. Our case presents the beneficial effect of myiasis infestation…

Human Chrysomya bezziana myiasis: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Myiasis due to Old World screw-worm fly, Chrysomya bezziana, is an important obligate zoonotic disease in the OIE-list of diseases and is found throughout much of Africa, the Indian subcontinent, southeast and east Asia. C. bezziana myiasis causes not only morbidity and death to animals and humans, but also economic losses in the livestock industries. Because of the aggressive and destructive nature of this disease in hosts, we initiated this study to provide a comprehensive understanding of human myiasis caused by C. bezziana. METHODS: We searched the databases in English (PubMed…

Obligate Myiasis: A Case Series From Nepal.

Although maggots are unanonymously linked to carcass or dead tissues, there are reports of its infestation into living tissues as well. Myiasis denotes maggot infestation in living tissue. There are two forms of myiasis namely obligate and facultative. Obligate myiasis denotes maggots feeding on living tissue whereas facultative myiasis represents the opportunistic behaviour of the fly taking advantage of wound or necrotic tissue, laying by eggs which hatch into maggots. Decreased physical activity and poor hygiene leads to maggot infestation. Maggot invasion of living tissues is undesirable o…

Oral squamous cell carcinoma associated with myiasis.

Myiasis is a general term for infection by fly larvae feeding on the host's necrotic or living tissue. Although infestation by fly larvae is much more prevalent in animals, it is a relatively frequent in occurrence. Oral myiasis is a rare pathology in humans and is associated with poor oral hygiene. Larvae cause itching and irritation due to their crawling movements and can destroy vital tissues, inducing serious or even life-threatening haemorrhage. The treatment is a mechanical removal of the maggots one by one; however, a systemic treatment with macrolide antibiotics, have been recently use…

Aural Myiasis by Wohlfahrtia magnifica: Case Report.

A 5-year-old child living in Erzurum, Turkey, complaining of otalgia, otorrhea and pruritus in the right ear for three days, was examined. Otoscopic examination at the Department of Otorhinolaryngology revealed live maggots in the external auditory canal. Ten maggots were recovered and were identified as third stage larvae of Wohlfahrtia magnifica (Diptera: Sarcophagidae). Local and systemic antibiotic therapies were applied. No pathological findings were present at the follow-up examination after 15 days of therapy.

Urinary myiasis associated with ureteral stent placements.

An adolescent with recently removed ureteral stents and exposure to toilet water contaminated with sink flies developed urinary myiasis after stent removal. Poor hygiene, urinary obstruction and retention and decreased general health are known risk factors for developing urinary myiasis. Good hygiene and sanitation practices should be emphasized to patients with indwelling urogenital foreign bodies such as ureteral stents.

Oral myiasis treated with ivermectin: case report.

Oral myiasis is a rare pathology and a risk to the patient's life. Conventional treatment is mechanical removal of the larvae (maggots) one by one, which is painful, distressing, and embarrassing both to the patient and to the dentist. We present a case report of a patient with cerebral palsy that had oral myiasis treated successfully with ivermectin. The use of this antibiotic in humans, its mechanism of action and indications are discussed.

[Gastrointestinal human myiasis caused by Eristalis tenax].

The myiasis observed in Bariloche are characterized and the probable conditions under which the infestations took place established. The larvae obtained from faeces of 2 patients were identified as Eristalis tenax (Diptera: Syrphidae) according to Hartley (1961) and Organización Panamericana de la Salud keys (1962). These 2 cases of human gastrointestinal myiasis were the first to be registered in Bariloche (Patagonia, Argentina) and their characteristics were similar to those described for this species in other parts of the world. The lack of specific control measures in the domestic water su…
