The prominent local myotoxic effects induced by Bothrops snake venom are due, in part, to myotoxins. This effect is not neutralized by antivenom, which is the main therapy for victims of snakebite. Phospholipases A(2) are important components of snake venoms, the basic isoforms have been more extensively studied than the acidic groups, maybe due to their higher toxicity. Trying to better understand the role of the acidic isoforms on the envenomation process, an acidic phospholipase A(2) was purified from Bothrops moojeni snake venom through two chromatographic steps (BmooPLA(2)). Several nitrostyrene derivatives were synthesized and their inhibitive activities on phospholipase A(2) (PLA(2)) from Bothrops jararacussu venom were evaluated. Some compounds were very efficient as inhibition agents against edema-inducing, enzymatic and myotoxic activities. An inhibitory protein that neutralizes the enzymatic, toxic and pharmacological activities of several phospholipases A(2) from Bothrops venoms was isolated from B. jararacussu snake plasma by affinity chromatography using the immobilized myotoxin BthTX-I on Sepharose gel. In Indian traditional medicine, various plants have been used widely as a remedy for treating snake bites. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of Tamarindus indica seed extract on the pharmacological as well as the enzymatic effects induced by V. russelli venom. Freeze-thawed muscle grafts (FTMG) have been used as an alternative to nerve grafts for the reconstruction of peripheral nerve defects, although their use has some disadvantages.
