The nail-patella syndrome (synonym of onychoosteodysplasia) is considered to be an autosomal dominant hereditary disease affecting numerous tissues of ectodermal and mesodermal origin. The changes are mostly found on nails, patellae, eyes and joints. The symptoms of nephropathy are present in 30% to 40% of patients, and renal insufficiency with typical signs of the syndrome in 25% of patients. Onychomycoses represent the most frequently seen nail diseases and are the most difficult to treat of all skin mycoses. They are rare in children and increase in incidence with age. Most cases are caused by dermatophytes, in particular by Trichophyton rubrum, less frequently by T mentagrophytes and Epidermophyton floccosum. Monkey digits were used experimentally to demonstrate the pathologic anatomy of nail deformities and the results of treatment using full and partial thickness nail matrix grafts. Seventy-five human nail deformities were evaluated and treated. In both the experimental and clinical groups, microscopic hypertrophy of the superficial epithelial elements underlying the deformed nail existed. A follow-up of treatment of nail deformities indicated that nail matrix grafts, both full and partial thickness, are beneficial when the defect involves the sterile matrix and the proximal nail fold.

Two cases of nail involvement associated with primary interphalangeal osteoarthritis of the hand, including leukonychia and longitudinal nail ridge, are reported. Osteoarthritic changes of the distal interphalangeal joints may cause nail lesions by exerting direct pressure on the nail matrix or by interfering with local blood flow. The authors illustrate an original method of osteosynthesis concerning shaft fractures in children: Stable Elastic Nailing. They elaborate the physiopathological basis and specify all details of this technique. The results of this treatment as well as its limits are considered through personal experience of 217 femurs, 42 tibias, 36 humerus, 84 fore-arms and 96 supracondylar fractures of the humerus. We essentially proceeded for a comparative analysis with other methods of osteosynthesis or conservative treatment, illustrating the net superiority of stable elastic nailing in their indications

Yellow nail syndrome was first described in 1964 by Samman and White. The full syndrome consists of the triad yellow nails, lymphedema, and pleural effusions with associated respiratory tract involvement. However, yellow nails alone or with any combination of the triad is termed yellow nail syndrome. We are describing a patient with yellow nails and pulmonary disease, whose nails cleared after resolution of his pulmonary condition. Although various therapeutic approaches have been used, the treatment of pulmonary disease was important in our patient.
