The one-week prevalence of neck pain and low back pain in post-secondary students at two Canadian institutions.

BACKGROUND: Low back and neck pain are common in the general population, but the prevalence among Canadian post-secondary students is not well known. We aimed to determine the one-week prevalence of neck pain (NP) and low back pain (LBP) among postsecondary students in Canada. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study of students enrolled in the Faculty of Health Sciences and Faculty of Education at Ontario Tech University, and the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College (CMCC) in the Fall of 2017. Neck and low back pain intensity in the past week were measured with the 11-point numerical …

Alterations in Masticatory Muscle Activation in People with Persistent Neck Pain Despite the Absence of Orofacial Pain or Temporomandibular Disorders.

AIM: To assess whether patients with persistent neck pain display evidence of altered masticatory muscle behavior during a jaw-clenching task, despite the absence of orofacial pain or temporomandibular disorders. METHODS: Ten subjects with persistent, nonspecific neck pain and 10 age- and sex-matched healthy controls participated. Maximal voluntary contractions (MVCs) of unilateral jaw clenching followed by 5-second submaximal contractions at 10%, 30%, 50%, and 70% MVC were recorded by two flexible force transducers positioned between the first molar teeth. Task performance was quantified by …

[Tractotomy and partial nucleotomy as a form of therapy in refractory pain of the trigeminal nerve and cancer pain in the head and neck area].

Persistent trigeminal neuralgia, herpes zoster neuralgia of the first division of the trigeminal nerve and pain caused by cancer situated in the head and neck pose frustrating problems for patients and physicians. Tractotomy and/or partial vertical nucleotomy of the subnucleus caudalis nervi trigemini offers a logical approach to the treatment of such pain, since these structures contain fibres of the Vth nerve, as well as the somatosensory fibres of the VIIth, IXth and Xth nerve. Tactile and some thermal sensitivity of the face is preserved and anaesthesia dolorosa and keratitis neuroparalyti

Effects of exercise therapy on pain and disability in patients with non-specific neck pain: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Existing systematic reviews and meta-analyses have only focused on patients with chronic non-specific neck pain (NNP), analyzing exercise therapy (ET) only as therapeutic exercise. Therefore, it is necessary to comprehensively review the effects of ET through a meta-analysis comprising a wide range of ETs that are not limited to therapeutic exercise. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to investigate the effects of ET on pain and disability in patients with NNP. DESIGN: Systematic review and meta-analysis. METHOD: The studies selected for this study were based on the PICO-SD tool as fo…

A retrospective evaluation of the impact of temporomandibular joint arthroscopy on the symptoms of headache, neck pain, shoulder pain, dizziness, and tinnitus.

Forty-three patients who underwent arthroscopic surgery for arthrogenous TMD were polled concerning the effect of surgery on the symptoms of headache, neck pain, shoulder pain, dizziness and tinnitus. Statistically significant levels of symptom reduction were recorded for all symptoms polled. This indicates that a substantial number of significant symptoms are produced by the influence of temporomandibular joint pathology on central neural processes. A model for the affect of temporomandibular joint pathology on cervical and masticatory musculature is proposed. This data implies that we cannot…

Intramuscular paravertebral oxygen-ozone therapy for chronic neck pain and low back pain: evaluation of 6-month clinical outcomes.

Spinal pain is recognized as the most common cause of disability, work absenteeism and need of healthcare services worldwide. Although many strategies have been developed for conservative treatment of spinal pain, its increasing prevalence diagnosis highlights the need for new treatments. Oxygen-ozone (O2-O3) therapy is considered to be an alternative therapy due to its analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects. This retrospective study evaluated the effects of O2-O3 intramuscular paravertebral injections in 76 patients with chronic neck pain or low back pain, in terms of pain and disability red…

Group-format pain reprocessing therapy in veterans with chronic back/neck pain: A pilot study with mixed methods evaluation.

Pain reprocessing therapy (PRT) has demonstrated efficacy for chronic back pain as delivered individually and in-person. To enhance scalability, we developed and implemented group-format telehealth PRT delivered in 8 weekly sessions. We tested this intervention in an uncontrolled pilot trial in Veterans with chronic back/neck pain (CBNP; N=46, NCT06406699). We enrolled four cohorts and conducted focus groups with each cohort following treatment. Based on feedback from the first two cohorts, we modified the treatment protocol. Primary outcomes were feasibility, assessed via attendance and reten…

Does increased superficial neck flexor activity in the craniocervical flexion test reflect reduced deep flexor activity in people with neck pain?

BACKGROUND: The craniocervical flexion test assesses the deep cervical flexor muscles (longus capitis, longus colli). Ideally, electromyography (EMG) studies measure activity in both deep and superficial (sternocleidomastoid, anterior scalene) flexors during the test, but most studies confine recordings to superficial muscle activity as the technique to record the deep muscles is invasive. Higher activity of the superficial flexors has been interpreted as an indicator of reduced deep flexor activity in people with neck pain but how close the inverse relationship is during this test is unknown.…
