158 cases of the Cooperative Ewing's Sarcoma Trials (CESS 81/86), which have been documented at the Pediatric Tumor Registry, Kiel, were studied by conventional light microscopy and immunohistochemistry. There were 77 cases of typical Ewing's sarcoma with 70 cases being located in the skeleton and 7 in soft tissues. Of the 14 cases of atypical Ewing's sarcoma 7 cases each were localized in bone and in soft tissue, respectively. In contrast to typical Ewing's sarcoma, cells of atypical Ewing's sarcoma were larger and displayed more heterochromatin. Both, typical and atypical Ewing's sarcoma rea

Phosphaturic mesenchymal tumor (PMT) is a rare neoplasm that secretes fibroblast growth factor-23 (FGF-23) and causes oncogenic osteomalacia. It occurs in adults with equal gender distribution and the most common location is the lower extremities, followed by the head and neck. Besides osteomalacia, the clinical presentation includes bone pain and multiple bone fractures. Microscopic features consist of spindle cells, multinucleated giant cells, and calcifications embedded in a chondromyxoid matrix. Laboratory findings indicate normal calcium and parathyroid levels, hypophosphatemia, and incre

BACKGROUND: Due to its occult position, complex anatomical structure, and spatial relationships, the causative tumor of Tumor-Induced Osteomalacia (TIO) in the hip region is quite difficult to detect and qualitatively diagnose in clinical practice. In this regard, clinicians often lack sufficient knowledge about such tumors, leading to frequent missed diagnoses, misdiagnoses, and unreasonable treatment.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the clinical characteristics of TIO patients with culprit soft tissue tumors in the hip region and evaluate the effect of surgical treatment on these

BACKGROUND: Tumor-induced osteomalacia (TIO) is a rare paraneoplastic syndrome characterized by severe hypophosphatemia and osteomalacia. Nonspecific symptoms make the diagnosis elusive. In addition, locating the responsible tumor(s) is challenging. The aim of this study was to investigate the clinical management and outcomes of TIO.
METHODS: The clinical features, diagnostic procedures, treatment, and outcomes of 12 patients were reviewed retrospectively.
RESULTS: The cohort comprised six men and six women (mean age 45.5 ± 9.9 years, range 23-61 years). The mean duration of disease was 3.7

Soft tissue sarcomas (STS) represent a rare entity of all malignant tumors (1%). Thus, an in-depth understanding of multidisciplinary treatment strategies may not be sufficiently present at all operative units. Consecutively, optimal diagnostic and therapeutical pathways may not be applied. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the procedure of choice in diagnosing STS. Biopsies should be performed in specialized centers. Identification of cytogenetic factors has become more important for the typing and prognosis of STS. Management of STS should employ multimodal treatment concepts (Oncology, Ra

Based on a representative selection of relevant references, the aim of this study was to reflect the change of the algorithm in the surgical management of desmoid tumours (DT) in cases of accompanying familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP). Main focus is concerned with the basics of differential treatment, including additional considerations on epidemiology, diagnosis, outcome and follow-up. DT are rare benign tumours that do not metastasise but tend to invade locally. In contrast to the general population, DT in patients with FAP are more common, show a different pattern of tumour sites and cau

Cellular fibrous connective tissue, which eventually mineralizes, replaces normal bone in a class of illnesses known as benign fibro-osseous lesions. Fibrous dysplasia, ossifying fibroma, and osseous dysplasia are the three most common forms of benign fibro-osseous lesions. Because of their overlapping clinical, radiological, and histological features, many disorders can be challenging to diagnose. Cemento-ossifying fibroma (COF) is considered a central neoplasm of mesenchymal origin that differentiates into bone and the periodontium. This has also sparked significant debate over its terminolo

OBJECTIVE: This article reviews autoimmune axonal neuropathies, their characteristic clinical features, disease and antibody associations, appropriate ancillary testing, treatment, and prognosis.
LATEST DEVELOPMENTS: In 2021, the American College of Rheumatology and the Vasculitis Foundation released new summary guidelines for the treatment of antineutrophil cytoplasmic autoantibody-associated vasculitides. In addition, novel autoantibodies have been recently identified; they are often paraneoplastic and associated with axonal neuropathies.
ESSENTIAL POINTS: Recognition of autoimmune axonal

Rheumatoid nodules are an extra-articular manifestation of rheumatoid arthritis that are rarely found in the maxillofacial region. A 59-year-old woman with rheumatoid arthritis treated with methotrexate, leflunomide, and tocilizumab, presented with an enlarging mass in the left parotid region. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) displayed a lesion compatible with a neoplasm. However, an incisional biopsy showed features consistent with a rheumatoid nodule. The patient was managed conservatively, including cessation of methotrexate and initiation of treatment with hydroxychloroquine. At 15-month f

The dentinogenic ghost cell tumor (DGCT) is a relatively uncommon locally invasive neoplasm that mimics several inflammatory/reactive lesions of the gingiva or odontogenic cysts. The confirmatory diagnosis of this rare lesion can only be made with histopathological examination. Routine staining reveals features of a "mixed" tumor as ghost cells with calcification, dysplastic dentin and islands of epithelium in rosette pattern in mature connective tissue are visible. The case report describes an asymptomatic growth in the maxillary gingiva of a young patient that was incidentally diagnosed as a

Splenogonadal fusion is a rare developmental anomaly in which an abnormal connection between the splenic tissue and gonads or mesonephric derivatives is present. Less than 200 cases have been reported since it was first described in 1883. Preoperative misdiagnosis is common and may lead to unnecessary orchidectomy if testicular neoplasm is suspected. To avoid such outcomes, it is important to be aware of the features of splenogonadal fusion. We report the case of a five-month-old male infant with continuous-type, left-sided splenogonadal fusion, which was discovered during groin exploration fo

Leiomyoma is a relatively uncommon neoplasm of the epididymis derived from smooth muscle cells. A case of primary leiomyomas simultaneously occurring in both epididymides is reported in a 58-year-old man, clinically presenting painless intra-scrotal masses. The examination of the epididymis characterizes clinically by a firm solid, well-circumscribe mass, and histological spindle cells arranged in interlacing bundles with varying admixtures of fibrous and hyalinized connective tissue. Clinical, histopathologic and immunohistopathologic features, with briefly reviewed relevant literatures descr

In the present case study, the patient was a 65-year-old man who suddenly developed purpuric and necrotic lesions with severe pain in his fingers and toes. Laboratory investigations revealed marked eosinophilia (77.9%), but there was no evidence to support a diagnosis of parasitic infections, allergic disease, neoplasm or connective tissue disorder. The histopathological findings did not show any distinct vasculitis, but there were obliterative changes of the arterioles. The digital gangrene gradually progressed and was unresponsive to corticosteroid therapy. The patient eventually underwent a

A yearling Arabian filly was referred to the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital with a history of weight loss, profound anemia, and peritoneal effusion. At necropsy, a large, soft, mottled tan and red neoplastic mass was at the pelvic inlet replacing the left ovary. Additional tumor nodules of various sizes were disseminated throughout the mesentery, diaphragm, and serosal surfaces of the abdominal viscera. Histologically, the neoplasm had sheets of large round to polygonal cells separated into lobules by fibrous connective tissue with multifocal areas of necrosis. Tumor cells stained strong

Digital papillary adenocarcinoma (DPA) is a rare sweat gland neoplasm that has exceptionally been reported outside acral locations. Recently, human papillomavirus 42 was identified as the main oncogenic driver of DPA. Herein, we report 5 tumors arising in extra-acral locations predominantly in the female anogenital skin. Four patients were female and 1 patient was male. The mean age at the diagnosis time was 65 years (range: 55 to 82 y). Tumors were located on the vulva (n=3), perianal area (n=1), and forearm (n=1). Histologically, all tumors were lobular and mainly solid and composed of sheet

Digital papillary adenocarcinoma (DPAC) is a rare tumor of sweat gland origin that preferentially affects the digits and has the potential to metastasize. Its tumor diagnosis can be difficult. Well-differentiated variants of DPAC can be confused with a benign sweat gland tumor, in particular nodular hidradenoma. With the recent detection of HPV42 DNA in DPAC by next-generation sequence analysis, we reasoned that this association could be used for diagnostic purposes. To this end, we performed in situ hybridization for HPV42 on 10 tumors diagnosed as DPAC as well as 30 sweat gland tumors of var

Inverted papilloma is a rare benign neoplasm that usually originates in the lateral nasal wall. It can be a locally aggressive lesion and invade nearby structures. While primarily a nasal neoplasm, cases of an inverted papilloma involving the temporal bone, pharynx, nasopharynx, and lacrimal sac have been reported. We describe the case of a 67-year-old man with a history of nasal inverted papilloma who presented with a recurrent nasal mass and a large mass on the left side of his upper neck. The patient's history included inverted papillomas in multiple locations: the temporal bone, the sinona

FOXP1 protein was firstly analyzed in normal tissues, and afterwards in different tumor tissues, mainly carcinoma and lymphoma. In B-cell malignancies, its role was well explored; its expression was shown to be connected with disease prognosis in certain B-non Hodgkin lymphomas. In this study, 16 bone marrow trephine samples from patients with no hematopoietic malignancies and 10 samples from peripheral blood of healthy individuals were immunostained with anti-FOXP1 antibody. Positive cells in bone marrows were not only lymphocytes, but also cells that are immunohistochemically positive for gl
