C1300 neuroblastoma was implanted with regenerating skeletal muscle to study the role of tissue interactions during tumor cell differentiation. The growth characteristics of Japanese encephalitis virus cultivated in Novikoff hepatoma cells grown in shaker culture can be differentially altered by the presence of 6-cis or cis-9-octadecenoic acid in Swim's 67-G medium. The addition of 125 mug of the 6-isomer per ml medium reduced the number of infectious particles produced, whereas the same amount of the 9-isomer enhanced virus production. The virus was found to be more stable in cell-free spent medium than in fresh medium. The presence of 125 mug 6-18:1 per ml in fresh medium resulted in a rapid loss of virus infectivity.

Radio frequency (RF) current has been used successfully to ablate normal human tissue. To further investigate the clinical application of this modality in tumors we studied the potential of using RF percutaneously to destroy experimental liver tumors. The effect of cell cytolysis on DAPI-DNA cytofluorometry was studied in order to eliminate nonspecific cytoplasmic hindrances in DAPI staining. A great improvement in the reproducibility of DNA determination was attained when cells were treated with hypotonic KCl (0.075 M) solution. C57BL/6 male mice with chronic trichinellosis, and age-matched uninfected control mice, were inoculated with B16 melanoma cells. Tumour development was inhibited in the infected animals. In the infected tumour-bearing mice, the tumor induction intervals were longer and the tumour size was subsequently smaller than in the control mice. Moreover, when the number of tumour cells in the inoculum was less than that required to produce 100% tumour incidence in the uninfected mice (less than 1 x 10(4) cells), significantly more of the mice with an infection of 2 months duration remained tumour-free.

The effect of phenacetin and caffeine on urinary bladder carcinogenesis in rats treated with N-butyl-N-(4-hydroxybutyl)nitrosamine (BBN) was examined.
