Melanoma complicating treatment with natalizumab for multiple sclerosis: A report from the Southern Network on Adverse Reactions (SONAR).

A 43-year-old female with multiple sclerosis developed urethral melanoma. The only potential risk factor was treatment with natalizumab, a humanized monoclonal antibody against α4 integrins. To investigate the risk-exposure relationship, we reviewed this case, all other published cases, and cases of natalizumab-associated melanoma reported to regulatory agencies. Data sources included the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) (2004-2014), a FDA Advisory Committee Meeting Report, and peer-reviewed publications. In the United States, the manufacturer maintai

Primary neoplasms of the duodenum.

The records of 12 patients with primary malignant neoplasms of the duodenum, excluding ampullary lesions, have been studied. There were eight adenocarcinomas and four leiomyosarcomas. The second portion of the duodenum was the most common site for these neoplasms. Common symptoms were epigastric pain; obstructive symptoms, such as nausea and vomiting; obstructive jaundice, and hematemesis. Hematemesis is the most common symptom in leiomyosarcoma of the duodenum. The mean duration of symptoms was six months for leiomyosarcoma and 3.2 months for adenocarcinoma. In five patients, excision of the

Ensartinib in a primary pulmonary ALK-rearranged mesenchymal neoplasm harboring a novel HMBOX1::ALK fusion: a case report and literature review.

Anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) gene rearrangements have been increasingly detected in mesenchymal neoplasms. ALK-rearranged mesenchymal neoplasms occur mainly in superficial tissues but rarely in internal organs. Herein, we firstly report a primary lung lesion presenting as a rare ALK-rearranged mesenchymal neoplasm. The patient diagnosed with primary pulmonary ALK-rearranged mesenchymal neoplasm (PPAMN) received ensartinib as postoperative adjuvant therapy, achieving a disease-free survival of 10 months. Continuation of ensartinib as first-line treatment enabled him to benefit from a partia

Hypopharyngeal paraganglioma: a case report.

Paragangliomas are neuroendocrine neoplasms that primarily afflict patients during the fourth and fifth decades of life. The majority of extra-adrenal paragangliomas arise in the head and neck region, notably from the carotid and aortic bodies, jugular bulb and tympanic plexus. Although one-fifth of all parapharyngeal neoplasms are paragangliomas, primary hypopharyngeal paraganglioma is relatively uncommon, only one other case having previously been documented by Filippin et al. (1989). We report a second case of hypopharyngeal paraganglioma in an 18-year-old male as seen in our center.

Multiple primary neoplasms in patients with salivary gland or thyroid gland tumors.

The exact risk of multiple primary neoplasms in patients with salivary gland or thyroid gland malignancies is difficult to ascertain from the data available in the literature. This study examines, retrospectively, 198 patients with a first malignancy of the salivary gland and 186 patients with a first malignancy of the thyroid gland, treated over a 10-year period. Fourteen cases of second tumors were found in the first group and 29 cases in the latter. Patients whose second neoplasm was a skin cancer or who had a previous neoplasm at a site other than those selected for study were excluded. Th

Systematic Review on the Fate of the Remnant Urothelium after Radical Cystectomy.

CONTEXT: Urothelial carcinoma is considered a pan-urothelial disease. As such, the remnant urothelium in the upper urinary tract and urethra following radical cystectomy (RC) remains at risk for secondary urothelial tumors (SUTs). OBJECTIVE: To describe the incidence, diagnosis, treatment, and outcomes of patients with SUTs after RC. EVIDENCE ACQUISITION: A systematic search was conducted using PubMed database according to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses guidelines to identify studies between 1970 and 2016 reporting on malignant diseases of the urothelium a

Lung cancer with breast metastasis: a case report and review of the literature.

In this article, we present a rare case of breast metastasis of lung cancer. Chest computed tomography (CT) for a woman in her early 50s indicated right lung malignancy, multiple bone metastases, and an irregular mass in her right breast. Further inquiry into the case history revealed that the patient had been aware of the breast mass for 3 years, without respiratory symptoms. Biopsy of the breast mass suggested estrogen receptor (ER) (+), progesterone receptor (PR) (-), and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) (+ +) breast cancer. The patient was initially diagnosed with breast can

Survival statistics for multiple primaries in head and neck cancer.

The recognition of a second primary carcinoma in a patient with known head and neck cancer is considered a poor prognostic sign. However, its true implication for patient survival is not known. A retrospective 10-year study showed that second primary malignancies developed in 207 of 875 patients. Second primary malignancies were most commonly associated with glottic index tumors, followed by floor of mouth tumors. The second primary was most likely to occur at a time interval of 1.5 years from diagnosis of the index tumor. Second primary neoplasms were more likely to develop in patients whose

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma of parotid gland as a subsequent neoplasm in children treated for acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

We report two cases of mucoepidermoid carcinoma occurring as a second neoplasm following treatment for acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Both patients underwent parotidectomy as the primary treatment. One of them received irradiation in addition to surgery. We discuss the risk of developing MEC as a second malignancy, prognosis, and treatment options.

Stereotactic body radiation therapy for multiple lung cancers in a patient with six primary cancers: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Surgery is the standard care for patients with early-stage lung cancer, and stereotactic body radiation therapy is an option for those who are medically inoperable or refuse surgery. Medical developments in diagnostic and therapeutic strategies would prolong prognosis of patients with cancer. The number of patients with multiple cancers has also increased. Duplex primary malignant neoplasms are the most common, and triple or more primary malignant neoplasms were extremely rare. This is the first case of sextuple primary malignant neoplasms with lung cancer. CASE PRESENTATION: We r

Primary cutaneous anaplastic large cell lymphoma.

Primary cutaneous anaplastic large cell lymphoma (PC-ALCL) is a CD30+ lymphoproliferative disorder (LPD) of the skin with a relatively good prognosis in the absence of high-stage disease. CD30+ LPDs comprise approximately 25%-30% of primary cutaneous lymphomas and as a group represent the second most common clonal T-cell neoplasm of the skin behind mycosis fungoides. Diagnosis of PC-ALCL relies strongly on clinicopathologic correlation given the potential morphologic, clinical and molecular overlap with the other cutaneous CD30+ LPD, lymphomatoid papulosis, and more aggressive hematolymphoid n

Multiple facial basal cell carcinomas in xeroderma pigmentosum treated with topical imiquimod 5% cream.

Xeroderma pigmentosum (XP) is an autosomal recessive disease characterized by solar sensitivity, photophobia, early onset of freckling, and solar-induced cutaneous neoplastic changes. Management of patients with XP is a therapeutic challenge as they usually develop multiple cutaneous malignancies, making surgical therapy difficult, and continue to form skin malignancies at a high rate. We describe a 30-year-old Chinese man with XP who had been previously treated with excision and dermatoplasty. Upon recurrence of multiple superficial, ulcerative, and pigmented lesions, imiquimod 5% cream was r

Primary appendiceal adenocarcinoma.

Adenocarcinoma of the appendix is rarely encountered and is usually discovered at the pathology examination of the surgical specimen. Adenocarcinoma of the vermiform appendix is a rare neoplasm and constitutes <0.5% of all gastrointestinal neoplasms. There is no symptom of appendiceal cancer, and it is very difficult to diagnose preoperatively. Most female patients are diagnosed as having a gynecologic disease. Second primary synchronous and metachronous neoplasms, especially in the gastrointestinal tract, are found in up to 35% of patients with appendix adenocarcinoma. We report a case of ade

Parathyroid carcinoma, a rare cause of primary hyperparathyroidism.

A 45 year-old woman who presented with non-specific neck and shoulder pain, was found to have mild hypercalcaemia, markedly elevated parathyroid hormone levels, and an irregular parathyroid gland on imaging. The patient underwent a parathyroidectomy and the pathology report came back positive for parathyroid carcinoma with muscular invasion. Parathyroid carcinoma is an exceptionally rare cause of primary hyperparathyroidism and can have a poor prognosis due to metastases and a high propensity to recur after resection. Reports of non-functioning parathyroid carcinomas tend to behave even more a
