Ameloblastoma is characterized histologically by evidence of ameloblastic differentiation and molecularly by MAPK pathway alterations, most frequently BRAFV600E mutation and RAS mutations, as well as by SMO mutations. This mutational profile is present across all histologic variants, including those occasionally lacking overt histologic evidence of ameloblastic differentiation, such as desmoplastic ameloblastoma and granular cell ameloblastoma. Recently, we have come across 4 cases of maxillary ameloblastoma demonstrating peculiar histologic features not accounted for by recognized histologic

Squamoid eccrine ductal carcinoma (SEDC) is a cutaneous adnexal malignancy that is histologically challenging to distinguish from squamous cell carcinoma. We report three cases of this rare entity and review the present literature regarding clinical, histological, and immunohistochemical features. Patients presented with a single nodule or plaque lesion on their back and temple. The shave biopsies for Patient A and C were interpreted as SEDC. Patient B's initial shave biopsy was interpreted as probable surface of squamous cell carcinoma, and subsequent excision revealed SEDC. Ductal differenti

Acrokeratosis paraneoplastica is a rare paraneoplastic syndrome commonly affecting males over 40 years of age. There exists a strong association with squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the upper aerodigestive tract or cervical metastatic disease originating from an unknown primary. We report a case associated with SCC of the right tonsil with persistent paraneoplastic cutaneous lesions 2 years after successful treatment of the underlying neoplasm.

The first case report is an undifferentiated squamous cell carcinoma of the ear. This patient complained with pain and discharging ear, which led us to practice a TC followed by an attico-antrotomy. The pathologist could detect in the removed tissue the neoplasm in its early evolutive stages. In the other case the earache and the suppuration suggested at first a carcinoma. In spite of the TAC and MR exams the surgery that followed was not confirmative of the tumor presence.

A 72-year-old man with a history of squamous cell carcinoma presented to the Portland VA with forehead discoloration. He was initially diagnosed with actinic damage and prescribed topical treatment. However, he returned to clinic months later with a large, violaceous forehead plaque. Upon biopsy, he was diagnosed with blastic plasmacytoid dendritic cell neoplasm (BPDCN), a rare hematological malignancy. This case report illustrates the importance of keeping BPDCN in the differential diagnosis for ecchymotic plaques that fail to respond to first line therapy.

Spindle cell carcinoma (SpCC), also known as sarcomatoid carcinoma, is a rare biphasic malignant neoplasm ranging variably from reactive to malignant making it critical and relatively challenging where tumors have areas of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) admixed with areas of pleomorphic tumor. It is a rare variant of SCC characterized by malignant spindle-shaped cells resembling sarcomas. Spindle cell lesions of the head and neck are diverse with great clinical and biological variety. They tend to show rapid progression with a high recurrence rate and the ability to metastasize, all of which co

The photoinduced etiopathology of actinic keratosis and squamous cell carcinoma in feline species is well known. This etiology has also been reported for non-epithelial cutaneous tumors in other species. To date, no cases of auricular non-epithelial cutaneous neoplasms erased in a contest of actinic keratosis in cats have been reported. The aim of this study was to describe feline auricular non-epithelial cutaneous neoplasms associated with typical UV-induced cutaneous lesions and solar elastosis. The study was conducted on five feline cases diagnosed with auricular non-epithelial cutaneous tu

The Wiskott-Aldrich Syndrome Protein family Verprolin--homologous proteins (WAVEs), encoded by a metastasis promoter gene, play considerable roles in adhesion of immune cells, cell proliferation, migration and destruction of foreign agents by reactive oxygen species. These diverse functions have lead to the hypothesis that WAVE proteins have multi-functional roles in regulating cancer invasiveness, metastasis, development of tumor vasculature and angiogenesis. Differentials in expression of WAVE proteins are associated with a number of neoplasms include colorectal cancer, hepatocellular cancer

Chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL) has been associated with an increased incidence of second neoplasms, especially skin cancers such as basal and squamous cell carcinomas. No association with the rarer skin cancer, the Merkel cell tumour (MCT), has previously been reported. Two patients with MCT had a previous diagnosis of CLL. MCT is an aggressive skin cancer, as up to 45% of patients have lymph node involvement at presentation and 5-year disease-free survival is as low as 30%. It is most commonly found on sun-exposed areas of the body, and ultraviolet radiation together with drug-induced or

Small cell carcinoma of the larynx is an uncommon neuroendocrine tumor with particular pathologic, therapeutic, and prognostic connotations. The first case of this lesion was observed in Canada in 1972. Fourteen cases of small cell carcinoma of the larynx were observed in the Ear, Nose, and Throat Department of Padua University in a series of 3,284 primary and secondary laryngeal and hypopharyngeal malignant neoplasms. This number constitutes the largest collection from a single institution in the literature and brings the total recorded cases to 66. The tumor is thought to arise from the argy

BACKGROUND: Thymic squamous cell carcinoma and type B3 thymoma are primary neoplasms of the anterior mediastinum that are sometimes difficult to differentiate from one another histologically. However, only a few immunohistochemical markers are available for the differential diagnosis. The purpose of this study was to discover a novel marker for differentiating between thymic squamous cell carcinoma and type B3 thymoma.
METHODS: We used histological samples of thymic carcinomas (n = 26) and type B3 thymomas (n = 38) which were resected between 1986 and 2017. To search for candidates of differe

Apart from single reported aberrant karyotypes, genetic alterations in thymic epithelial neoplasms have not been investigated so far. In this study, 12 World Health Organization classification type A thymomas (medullary thymomas), 16 type B3 thymomas (well-differentiated thymic carcinomas), and nine type C thymomas, all of them primary thymic squamous cell carcinomas, were analyzed by comparative genomic hybridization and fluorescence in situ hybridization. With the exception of one single case, type A thymomas did not reveal chromosomal gains or losses in comparative genomic hybridization. In

Precision dermatology uses individualized dermatologic disease-directed targeted therapy (D3T2) for the management of dermatoses and for the evaluation and therapy of cutaneous malignancies. Personalized/precision strategies are based on biomarkers that are most frequently derived from tissue transcriptomic expression or genomic sequencing or from circulating cytokines. For instance, the pathologic diagnosis of a pigmented lesion and determining the prognosis of a malignant melanocytic neoplasm can be enhanced by genomic/transcriptomic analysis. In addition to biopsy, innovative techniques hav

BACKGROUND: Adrenal tumors are quite common. If malignancy is suspected, the question arises whether the adrenal tumor is the primary or a secondary (= metastasis) malignancy. Surgery on adrenal metastases is generally considered to be of limited value if other distant metastases exist. We present a case of laryngeal squamous cell cancer that subsequently developed a large adrenal metastasis and multiple lymph node metastases treated successfully with surgery and immunotherapy.

PURPOSE: Penile squamous cell carcinoma is a rare neoplasm associated with a high risk of metastasis and morbidity. There are limited data on the role of the mTOR signaling pathway in penile squamous cell carcinoma carcinogenesis and tumor maintenance. We assessed a possible role for mTOR signaling pathway activation as a potential predictive biomarker of outcome and a therapeutic target for penile cancer.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A cohort of 67 patients diagnosed with invasive penile squamous cell carcinoma from 1987 to 2010 who had known HPV status were selected for study. Tissue microarrays w

Synchronous or metachronous malignancies are a rare event, with an incidence rate that increases with age. The present study reports the case of a 70-year-old Caucasian male who was referred to the outpatient office of the Urology Unit, Sapienza University of Rome (Latina, Italy) due to lower urinary tract symptoms. An abdominal ultrasound investigation was performed that demonstrated the presence of a right renal mass. The patient underwent right radical nephrectomy, which resulted in the definitive diagnosis of clear cell type renal cell carcinoma. The patient was eventually diagnosed with t

Lung squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC) rarely metastasizes to the parotid gland, with only a handful of cases reported in the literature. Its clinical and pathological presentations closely mimic those of primary parotid squamous cell carcinoma (PSCC). Differentiating solitary metastasis from metachronous primary squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) in patients with a history of smoking and lung cancer presents a significant diagnostic challenge. A 55-year-old man with a history of heavy smoking presented with a solitary parotid mass two years after curative LSCC resection. Excisional biopsy with histol

BACKGROUND: Paraneoplastic limbic encephalitis (PLE) is a rare syndrome characterized by memory impairment, symptoms of hypothalamic dysfunction, and seizures. It commonly precedes the diagnosis of cancer. Small-cell lung cancer is the neoplasm that is most frequently reported as the etiology underlying PLE.
CASE REPORT: This report describes a male patient who presented with neurologic symptoms consistent with anterograde amnesia, apathy, and disorientation. MRI revealed diffuse hyperintensities located predominantly in the medial bitemporal lobes, basal ganglia, frontal lobes, and leptomeni

BACKGROUND: Renal squamous cell carcinoma is a rare neoplasm with poor prognosis. Chronic irritation from nephrolithiasis and/or pyelonephritis is the leading cause.
CASE PRESENTATION: We described a 51-year-old male patient who was admitted because of left flank pain. Ultrasonography showed a renal cyst containing calculus. However, contrast-enhanced ultrasonography and CT scan revealed an irregular-shaped mass derived from a calculi-containing cyst. Ultrasound guided biopsy confirmed the diagnosis of renal squamous cell carcinoma. The patient refused any further therapeutic management and d

Tumors of the anus and perianal skin are rare. Their presentation can vary and often mimics common benign anal pathology, thereby delaying diagnosis and appropriate and timely treatment. The anatomy of this region is complex because it represents the progressive transition from the digestive system to the skin with many different co-existing types of cells and tissues. Squamous cell carcinoma of the anal canal is the most frequent tumor found in the anal and perianal region. Less-frequent lesions include Bowen's and Paget's disease, basal cell carcinoma, melanoma, and adenocarcinoma. This arti
