BACKGROUND: Flexible ureterorenoscopy (fURS) and mini-percutaneous nephrolithotomy (mPCNL) have been increasingly used for the treatment of renal stones. However, current guidelines do not recommend one modality over the other. The aim of this study is to compare the safety and efficacy of treatment with fURS versus mPCNL for renal stones sized 2 cm or less.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A prospective, randomized, comparative study was conducted between January 2019 and July 2021 at 3 tertiary care urology centers. Inclusion criteria were adult patients with renal stone(s) ≤ 2 cm with inappropriaten

We aimed to perform a systematic review of randomized trials to summarize the evidence on the safety and stone-free rate after Tubeless percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) (ureteral stent/catheter, no nephrostomy) compared to Standard PCNL (nephrostomy, with/without ureteral stent/catheter) to evaluate if the tubeless approach is better. The inverse variance of the mean difference with a random effect, 95% Confidence Interval (CI), and p values was used for continuous variables. Categorical variables were assessed using Cochran-Mantel-Haenszel method with the random effect model, and reported

BACKGROUND: Injury of the renal collecting system is a well-known complication of percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PNL). Large injuries may cause excessive bleeding and fluid extravasation and require adequate drainage using several modalities such placement of JJ stents. Herein, we report on two cases in which the upper coil of the JJ stent got buried in the fibrous tissues which formed due to an injury of the collecting system during PNL.
CASE PRESENTATION: 40 years old male and 32 years old female underwent standard PNL for partial and total staghorn calculi, respectively. During the procedur

PURPOSE: Percutaneous nephrolithotomy access may be technically challenging and result in significant radiation exposure. In an attempt to reduce percutaneous nephrolithotomy radiation exposure, a novel technique combining ultrasound and direct ureteroscopic visualization was developed and reviewed.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ureteroscopy without fluoroscopy was used to determine the optimal calyx for access, which was punctured with a Chiba needle under percutaneous ultrasound guidance. Next a wire was passed into the collecting system and ureteroscopically pulled into the ureter using a basket.

OBJECTIVES: Supracostal access during percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) increases the risk of pulmonary complications. Although routine postoperative thoracic imaging is commonly performed to detect these events, its clinical necessity remains controversial. This study aimed to assess the necessity of routine postoperative thoracic imaging for detecting pulmonary complications in patients undergoing supracostal mini percutaneous nephrolithotomy (m-PCNL) surgery.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on data from patients who underwent supracostal m-PCNL between 2017 and 2022 in a
