Lipomatosis of nerve (LN) is a rare disorder of peripheral nerves that produces proliferation of interfascicular adipose tissue. It may be associated with soft-tissue and bony overgrowth within the affected nerve territory. LN has been almost exclusively reported in appendicular peripheral nerves; the median nerve at the wrist and palm is among the most common locations. The authors present a new pattern of LN that shows circumferential proliferation of fat around the epineurium of the nerve. They believe that this case and the two other documented examples in the literature (also affecting ce

CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: Optic nerve tissue from an individual with NMO did not differ in AQP4 expression from control samples. The relatively high levels of expression and of supramolecular aggregation in the optic nerve and spinal cord may contribute to the predilection of these structures …

Periauricular paresthesia may afflict patients for a significant amount of time after facelift surgery. When performing face and neck lift surgery, temple and posterior auricular flap dissection is undertaken directly over the auriculotemporal, great auricular, and lesser occipital nerve territory, leading to potential damage to the nerve. The auriculotemporal nerve remains under the thin outer superficial fascia just below the subfollicular level in the prehelical area. To prevent damage to the auriculotemporal nerve and to protect the temporal hair follicle, the dissection plane should be ke

Peripheral nerve injury poses a significant challenge to the nervous system's regenerative capacity. We previously described a novel approach to construct a chitosan/silk fibroin nerve graft with skin-derived precursor-induced Schwann cells (SKP-SCs). This graft has been shown to promote sciatic nerve regeneration and functional restoration to a level comparable to that achieved by autologous nerve grafts, as evidenced by behavioral, histological, and electrophysiological assessments. However, the underlying molecular mechanisms based on SKP-SCs mediated tissue engineering-aid regeneration rem

Lipomatosis of the nerve in the digital nerve is extremely rare. We report a case of lipomatosis of the nerve in the digital nerve on the ulnar side of the ring finger in a 20-year-old female. The patient presented with neurological symptoms, including pain and numbness. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a fatty lesion on the ulnar side of the left ring finger, and biopsy revealed adipose tissue and fibrous stroma, but no definitive diagnosis was made. Surgical treatment consisted of total excision of the fatty tumor along with the affected nerve, followed by nerve reconstruction using a ner

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Traumatic transection of a peripheral nerve is inherently associated with the development of neuroma at the end of the proximal stump, often leading to therapy-resistant pain. This study was designed to evaluate whether the neodymium:yttrium aluminum garnet (Nd:YAG) laser could prevent neuroma formation after neurectomy.
STUDY DESIGN/MATERIALS AND METHODS: The sciatic nerves of 14 rats were diffuse coagulated by defocused Nd:YAG laser (12 W power), and subsequently transected with additional focused laser energy. The control group consisted of contralateral nerves t

Peripheral nerve regeneration and functional recovery rely on the chemical, physical, and structural properties of nerve guidance conduits (NGCs). However, the limited support for long-distance nerve regeneration and axonal guidance has hindered the widespread use of NGCs. This study introduces a novel nerve guidance conduit with oriented lateral walls, incorporating multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) within core-shell fibers prepared in a single step using a modified electrohydrodynamic (EHD) printing technique to promote peripheral nerve regeneration. The structured conduit demonstrated

The repair of peripheral nerve laceration injury to obtain optimal function recovery remains a big challenge in the clinic. Misdirection of regenerating axons to inappropriate target, as a result of forced mismatch of endoneurial sheaths in the case of end-to-end nerve anastomosis or nerve autografting, represents one major drawback that limits nerve function recovery. Here we tested whether tubulation repair of a nerve defect could be beneficial in terms of nerve regeneration accuracy and nerve function. We employed sequential retrograde neuronal tracing to assess the accuracy of motor axon r

BACKGROUND: The authors evaluated the efficacy of decellularized nerve as a scaffold for nerve regeneration.
METHODS: Sciatic nerves harvested from Sprague-Dawley rats were decellularized in combination with sodium dodecyl sulfate and Triton X-100, and examined with scanning electron microscopy and immunofluorescence staining. A graft into the sciatic nerve in Wistar rats was performed with the decellularized Sprague-Dawley rat sciatic nerves [allograft: 10 mm long (n = 3) for short term and 15 mm long (n = 5) for long term]. As a control, a portion of sciatic nerve of Wistar rats was cut, re

BACKGROUND: [corrected] Nerve grafting is the most reliable used procedure to bridge a neural defect, but it is associated with donor site morbidity. In experimental surgery the search for an optimal nerve conduit led to the use of biological and artificial material. Nerve regeneration through epineural conduits for bridging short nerve defect was examined.
METHODS: Four groups including 126 New Zealand rabbits were used. There were 3 study groups (A, B and C) and 1 control group (D). A 10-mm long sciatic nerve defect was bridged either with 3 variations of an epineural flap (Groups A, B and

Given the crucial role nerves play in maintaining corneal function and integrity, the ability of bioengineered cornea to demonstrate functional nerve regeneration directly influences their longevity and stability. Despite advances in biofabrication techniques and an increasing appreciation of the importance of neural innervation, to this day none have completely replicated the complexity and functionality of the cornea with successful innervation. This review evaluates the materials and fabrication techniques used to produce and enhance innervation in bioengineered cornea. Approaches to facili

The influence of breaching the connective sheaths of the donor sural nerve on axonal sprouting into the end-to-side coapted peroneal nerve was examined in the rat. In parallel, the effect of these procedures on the donor nerve was assessed. The sheaths of the donor nerve at the coaptation site were either left completely intact (group A) or they were breached by epineurial sutures (group B), an epineurial window (group C), or a perineurial window (group D). In group A, the compound action potential (CAP) of sensory axons was detected in ~10% and 40% of the recipient nerves at 4 and 8 weeks, re

Damage to either the central or peripheral nervous system can result in significant impairments of movement and sensation, with poor regeneration often resulting from complications such as nerve adhesion and fibrosis. Adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs) have emerged as a promising therapeutic candidate in promoting nerve regeneration owing to their regenerative potential, abundance, ease of harvest, low immunogenicity, and anti-inflammatory properties. ADSCs, isolated from adipose tissue, can differentiate into neural lineages, secrete a broad spectrum of neurotrophic and anti-fibrotic factors,

This animal experiment was aimed to apply fibrin in facial nerve repair and to quest for technical improvements in facial surgery. In each of 15 healthy large ear white rabbits, a unilateral 5 mm intratemporal facial nerve gap was created, the proximal and distal stumps were inserted into chitin tube, 1 ml autologous fibrin glue was applied around the anastomotic zone, and no suture was employed. At 3 months and 5 months after opertion, electrophysioligical study was performed. Compared with normal nerves, the regenerating nerves in both the chitin tube bridged group and the perineurium suture

Our understanding of chronic pain and the underlying molecular mechanisms remains limited due to a lack of tools to identify the complex phenomena responsible for exaggerated pain behaviours. Furthermore, currently there is no objective measure of pain with current assessment relying on patient self-scoring. Here, we applied a fully biologically unsupervised technique of hyperspectral autofluorescence imaging to identify a complex signature associated with chronic constriction nerve injury known to cause allodynia. The analysis was carried out using deep learning/artificial intelligence method

UNLABELLED: The accurate identification of peripheral nerves using ultrasound is essential for the safe and effective application of image-guided interventions in pain management. The femoral nerve (FN) and saphenous nerve (SN) are common targets for peripheral nerve invasive techniques, yet their depth and anatomical variability can impact procedural success. The objective was to describe the ultrasound anatomy of the FN and SN in healthy individuals and analyze how anthropometric variables predict its location.
DESIGN: A cross-sectional study was conducted in 30 healthy participants. Ultras
