Meta-analysis of P300 waveform in panic disorder.

The P300 waveform has been inconsistently linked to the maladaptive information-processing characterized in panic disorder (PD). The purpose of this study was to synthesize previous event-related potential (ERP) findings and determine whether patients with PD have significant abnormalities in the P300 wave compared to controls. We performed a systematic literature search for studies published between 1980 and 2013 that reported P300 measurements in patients with PD and controls. Effect size estimates were computed using the restricted maximum likelihood model. We identified 14 ERP studies that

Mosaic evolution of neural development in anurans: acceleration of spinal cord development in the direct developing frog Eleutherodactylus coqui.

Previous studies have shown that spinal cord development in direct developing frogs of the genus Eleutherodactylus, which have evolutionarily lost the tadpole stage, differs from that in biphasically developing anurans (with the larval and the adult stage separated by metamorphosis). The present study of spinal cord development in Eleutherodactylus coqui provides additional information about neurogenesis, neuronal differentiation and growth analyzed by immunostaining for proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA), in situ hybridization for NeuroD, and morphometric measurements in various develo

Clinical spectrum and diagnostic outcomes of patients with suspected inflammatory rheumatic disease in the emergency department: a retrospective study.

Little is known about patients presenting to the emergency department (ED) with rheumatological complaints. We aimed to characterize rheumatological patients in the ED and analyze the role of the rheumatologist in their management. This retrospective single-center cohort study analyzed 340 patients presenting to the emergency department (ED) between 2019 and 2023 with a suspected new inflammatory rheumatic disease (IRD). Clinical and process data were evaluated. In addition, multivariable logistic regression and a neural network model were employed to identify factors that are predictive of a

[Study on effects of 40 Hz light flicker stimulation on spatial working memory in rats and its neural mechanism].

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disease characterized by cognitive impairment, with the predominant clinical diagnosis of spatial working memory (SWM) deficiency, which seriously affects the physical and mental health of patients. However, the current pharmacological therapies have unsatisfactory cure rates and other problems, so non-pharmacological physical therapies have gradually received widespread attention. Recently, a novel treatment using 40 Hz light flicker stimulation (40 Hz-LFS) to rescue the cognitive function of model animals with AD has made initial progress, but

Biometric Alterations of Mouse Embryonic Eye Structures Due to Short-Term Folic Acid Deficiency.

PURPOSE: Folic acid (FA) is an essential nutrient for normal embryonic development. FA deficiency (FAD) in maternal diet increases the risk of several defects among the progeny, especially, neural tube defects. The eye begins its development from the neural tube; however, the relationship between FAD and ocular development in the offspring has been little explored and it isn't known how the FAD affects the formation of the eye. Our objective was to analyze the effect of maternal FAD on mouse embryos ocular biometry. METHODS: Female mice C57/BL/6J were distributed into three different groups,

Effect of action-based cognitive remediation on cognition and neural activity in bipolar disorder: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive impairment is present in bipolar disorder (BD) during the acute and remitted phases and hampers functional recovery. However, there is currently no clinically available treatment with direct and lasting effects on cognitive impairment in BD. We will examine the effect of a novel form of cognitive remediation, action-based cognitive remediation (ABCR), on cognitive impairment in patients with BD, and explore the neural substrates of potential treatment efficacy on cognition. METHODS/DESIGN: The trial has a randomized, controlled, parallel-group design. In total, 58 patien

Electrophysiological evidence that musical experience affects spatial auditory perception.

Musical experience is associated with enhanced auditory abilities, but it remains unclear how these benefits are expressed across different stages of spatial auditory processing. Therefore, we examined participants with and without musical experience using a spatial auditory oddball paradigm with multiple spatial deviations under both unattended and attended conditions. Behavioral performance, event-related potentials, and phase-locking value (PLV)-based functional connectivity were jointly analyzed to characterize spatial auditory processing at behavioral, local neural, and network levels. Effects of galvanic vestibular stimulation on motor control in patients with Parkinson's disease: study protocol.

Parkinson's disease (PD) presents with both motor and non-motor symptoms. Postural and gait aspects, as well as the risk of falls, are important causes of morbidity and mortality in PD. The neural correlates of PD are alterations in the substantia nigra of the midbrain and, among other sites mentioned, the pontine peduncle nucleus stands out. Noninvasive neuromodulation, such as galvanic vestibular stimulation (GVS), can be used in the neural centers involved in motor control alterations in PD. Projections from the vestibular system are involved in motor control and can stimulate the basal nuc

Scratcher: An automated machine-vision tool for dissecting the neural basis of itch.

Itch or pruritus invokes a specific reflexive and repetitive directed nocifensive behavioural response, known as scratching. Recent decades have revealed neural circuits that are involved in the sensory and affective-motivational aspects of itch-induced scratching. However, most of these studies relied on manual subjective methods of quantifying scratching in laboratory mice and rats. Recent advances in deep learning have opened avenues for the development of computational tools to analyze animal behaviour in a reliable and automated manner. Further, combined with optogenetic and chemogenetic

Getting blood from a stone: Improving brain-behavior inferences without brain data.

In recent years, the cognitive neuroscience literature has come under criticism for containing many low-powered studies, limiting the ability to make reliable statistical inferences. Typically, the suggestion for increasing power is to collect more data with neural signals. However, many studies in cognitive neuroscience use parameters estimated from behavioral data in order to make inferences about neural signals (such as fMRI BOLD signal). In this paper, we explore how cognitive neuroscientists can learn more about their neuroimaging signal by collecting data on behavior alone and using alte

Changes in Structural Neural Networks in the Recovery Process of Motor Paralysis after Stroke.

In recent years, neurorehabilitation has been actively used to treat motor paralysis after stroke. However, the impacts of rehabilitation on neural networks in the brain remain largely unknown. Therefore, we investigated changes in structural neural networks after rehabilitation therapy in patients who received a combination of low-frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (LF-rTMS) and intensive occupational therapy (intensive-OT) as neurorehabilitation. Fugl-Meyer assessment (FMA) for upper extremity (FMA-UE) and Action Research Arm Test (ARAT), both of which reflected upper lim

Association between irritable temperament and glucose metabolism in the left insula and the right cerebellum.

INTRODUCTION: Affective temperaments are assumed to have biological and neural bases. In the present study, we analyzed 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) positron emission tomography (PET) images of healthy participants to explore the neural basis of affective temperaments. METHOD: We utilized data of affective temperament measured by the Temperament Evaluation of Memphis, Pisa, Paris, and San Diego-Autoquestionnaire and 18F-FDG PET images of healthy participants from two of our previous studies. A multiple regression analysis was performed to assess the association between 18F-FDG uptake and temp

The Resting-State Activities of the Angular Gyrus and the Micturition Desire-Awakening Function in Children With and Without Enuresis.

BACKGROUND: Micturition desire-awakening (MDA) function plays a pivotal role in the development of primary nocturnal enuresis (PNE); however, its neural correlates remain largely unexplored. Consequently, this study aimed to identify specific brain regional activities associated with MDA function. METHODS: Neuroimaging data were collected from 173 children with varying MDA functional grade scores at the Department of Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics, Shanghai Children's Medical Center, from July 2018 to November 2022. Resting-state images were analyzed using whole-brain correlation tec

Altered activation of the dorsal anterior cingulate cortex during oddball performance in individuals at risk for Alzheimer's disease.

INTRODUCTION: The neural mechanisms underlying neurodegenerative disorders in the elderly remain elusive, despite extensive neuroimaging research in recent decades. Amnestic type mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) and late-life major depressive disorder (MDD) are two such conditions characterized by intersecting cognitive and affective symptomatology, and they are at a higher risk for Alzheimer's disease. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study analyzed the neural underpinnings of cognitive and depressive symptoms in a cohort comprising 12 aMCI subjects, 24 late-life MDD patients, and 26 healthy cont

The role of left angular gyrus in the representation of linguistic composition relations.

Language comprehension is compositional: individual words are combined structurally to form larger meaning representations. The neural basis for compositionality is at the center of a growing body of recent research. Previous work has largely used univariate analysis to investigate the question, a technique that could potentially lead to the loss of fined-grained information due to the procedure of averaging over neural responses. In a functional magnetic resonance imaging experiment, the present study examined different types of composition relations in Chinese phrases, using a 1-back composi

Different Neural Activities for Actions and Language within the Shared Brain Regions: Evidence from Action and Verb Generation.

The Inferior Frontal Gyrus, Premotor Cortex and Inferior Parietal Lobe were suggested to be involved in action and language processing. However, the patterns of neural activities in the shared neural regions are still unclear. This study designed an fMRI experiment to analyze the neural activity associations between action and verb generation for object nouns. Using noun reading as a control task, we compared the differences and similarities of brain regions activated by action and verb generation. The results showed that the action generation task activated more in the dorsal Premotor Cortex

Assessment of Audio-Tactile Sensory Substitution Training in Participants with Profound Deafness Using the Event-Related Potential Technique.

This paper examines the application of electroencephalogram-based methods to assess the effects of audio-tactile substitution training in young, profoundly deaf (PD) participants, with the aim of analyzing the neural mechanisms associated with vibrotactile complex sound discrimination. Electrical brain activity reflects dynamic neural changes, and the temporal precision of event-related potentials (ERPs) has proven to be key in studying time-locked processes while performing behavioral tasks that involve attention and working memory. The current protocol was designed to study electrophysiologi

Detection of tACS Entrainment Critically Depends on Epoch Length.

Neural entrainment is the phase synchronization of a population of neurons to an external rhythmic stimulus such as applied in the context of transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS). tACS can cause profound effects on human behavior. However, there remain a significant number of studies that find no behavioral effect when tACS is applied to human subjects. To investigate this discrepancy, we applied time sensitive phase lock value (PLV) based analysis to single unit data from the rat motor cortex. The analysis revealed that detection of neural entrainment depends critically on the
