The pineal organ of elasmobranchs is an elongated photoreceptive organ. In order to investigate the afferent and efferent connections of the pineal organ of two elasmobranchs, the skate (Raja montagui) and the dogfish (Scyliorhinus canicula), a fluorescent carbocyanine (DiI) was applied to the pineal organ of paraformaldehyde-fixed brains. This application strongly labeled the pineal tract, which formed extensive bilateral projections. In both species, the pinealofugal fibers coursed to the dorsomedial thalamus, the medial pretectal area, the posterior tubercle, and the medial mesencephalic te

The present study was carried out in order to clarify the organization of the pontine projection from the inferior colliculus in the cat with the methods of Nauta27 and Fink and Heimer16 following lesions of different sizes and locations in the inferior colliculus. The inferior colliculus projects exclusively to the anterior two-thirds of the ipsilateral dorsolateral pontine nucleus. The majority of fibers originates from cells in the central nucleus and a small amount from cells in the external and the pericentral nuclei as well. Areas of the present projection largely overlap with areas of p

This review describes two clinically significant face processing deficits, prosopagnosia and Capgras delusion, and provides new knowledge about the face recognition process by a convergence of empirical findings. These empirical findings are structured around two questions that are reviewed from the perspectives of the two deficits. First is the question of hemispheric specificity, which inquires into the degree of each hemisphere's contribution to the face recognition process. Second is the question of dual neural pathways, which addresses the possibility that the face recognition process pro…

Summated evoked potentials to peroneal nerve stimulation which arise in the cauda equina and spinal cord afferent pathways were recorded from surface electrodes placed over the spine of 95 infants, children and adults. The conduction velocity of these potentials from lumbar to cervical recording sites was calculated. Additionally, segmental conduction velocities over peroneal nerve, caudal and rostral spinal cord were determined. In all age groups the speed of conduction up the spine was non-linear. It was slower over caudal spinal cord segments than over peripheral nerve or rostral cord. All

With advances in connectomics, transcriptome and neurophysiological technologies, the neuroscience of brain-wide neural circuits is poised to take off. A major challenge is to understand how a vast diversity of functions is subserved by parcellated areas of mammalian neocortex composed of repetitions of a canonical local circuit. Areas of the cerebral cortex differ from each other not only in their input-output patterns but also in their biological properties. Recent experimental and theoretical work has revealed that such variations are not random heterogeneities; rather, synaptic excitation

Central oscillators are primordial neural circuits that generate and control rhythmic movements1,2. Mechanistic understanding of these circuits requires genetic identification of the oscillator neurons and their synaptic connections to enable targeted electrophysiological recording and causal manipulation during behaviours. However, such targeting remains a challenge with mammalian systems. Here we delimit the oscillator circuit that drives rhythmic whisking-a motor action that is central to foraging and active sensing in rodents3,4. We found that the whisking oscillator consists of parvalbumi

Nausea is a common clinical symptom, poorly managed with anti-emetic drugs. To identify potential brain regions which may be therapeutic targets we systematically reviewed brain imaging in subjects reporting nausea. The systematic review followed PRISMA statements with methodological quality (MINORS) and risk of bias (ROBINS-I) assessed. Irrespective of the nauseagenic stimulus the common (but not only) cortical structures activated were the inferior frontal gyrus (IFG), the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) and the anterior insula (AIns) with some evidence for lateralization (Left-IFG, Right-AI

During embryonic development of the avian optic tectum, retinal and tectobulbar axons form an orthogonal array of nerve processes. Growing axons of both tracts are transiently very closely apposed to each other. Despite this spatial proximity, axons from the two pathways do not intermix, but instead restrict their growth to defined areas, thus forming two separate plexiform layers, the stratum opticum and the stratum album centrale. In this study we present experimental evidence indicating that the following three mechanisms might play a role in segregating both axonal populations: Retinal and

BACKGROUND: Single genetic variants can affect multiple tissues during development. Thus it is possible that disruption of shared gene regulatory networks might underlie syndromic presentations. In this study, we explore this idea through examination of two critical developmental programs that control orofacial and neural tube development and identify shared regulatory factors and networks. Identification of these networks has the potential to yield additional candidate genes for poorly understood developmental disorders and assist in modeling and perhaps managing risk factors to prevent morbi

Located in the midline anterior wall of the third cerebral ventricle (i.e. the lamina terminalis), the median preoptic nucleus (MnPO) receiv … relevant neural outputs, both excitatory and inhibitory, to be activated or inhibited. The efferent neural pathways that proceed from the MnPO terminate on (i) neuroendocrine cells in the hypothalamic supraoptic and paraventricular nuclei to regulate vasopressin release, while polysynaptic pathways from MnPO to cortical sites may drive thirst and water intake, (i …

The representations of the face and oral cavity occupy a large but understudied portion of primary somatosensory cortex (S1 or area 3b) in primates. These studies are clearly important in processing food, taste, and vocalizations. Little is known about the neuronal representations of the teeth and tongue, their relationship with myeloarchitecture, and their cortical and thalamic connections in area 3b of strepsirrhine galagos. In owl and squirrel monkeys, and likely in macaque monkeys, the most lateral portion of S1 represents the face, teeth, and tongue in a series of myelin-dense ovals, incl

The exploration of consciousness and the elucidation of the mechanisms underlying general anesthesia are two intertwined endeavors that have significantly advanced our understanding of the neural correlates of awareness. Both fields converge on the neural systems that regulate consciousness. Frontoparietal networks, known for their involvement in executive functions, attention, and cognitive control, emerge as key players in the transition from wakefulness to anesthesiainduced unconsciousness. This review synthesizes recent findings highlighting the pivotal role of fronto-parietal connectivity

OBJECTIVE: This review aimed to examine the role of the amygdala as a central hub in the pathophysiology of chronic pain, with a specific focus on fibromyalgia and migraine. We synthesize evidence on how structural, functional, and neurochemical alterations within amygdala-centered circuits contribute to pain amplification, emotional dysregulation, and central sensitization, and discuss their implications for circuit-based therapeutic strategies.
METHODS: A comprehensive, theory-driven literature synthesis was conducted, integrating findings from neuroimaging, neuromodulation, molecular neuro

The cerebellum, long known for its role in motor control, has increasingly been implicated in cognitive and affective functions. Despite this broadened perspective, its connectivity remains undercharacterized relative to the cerebral cortex. Here, we present the first comprehensive cerebellar connectome analysis derived from a large-scale, meta-analytic database of over 7,800 high-resolution tract-tracing studies in the rat brain. Leveraging the neuroVIISAS framework, we constructed a directionally weighted, hierarchically organized cerebellar subnetwork integrating both intrinsic and extrinsi

The chicken brainstem sound localization neural network exhibits a case where fiber length varies continuously across the fiber arrays connecting n. magnocellularis and n. laminaris. Detailed morphometric measurements were taken to quantify these length gradients. For both ipsilateral and contralateral projections, the path lengths connecting the caudal low-frequency segments are longer than those at the rostral high-frequency end, with a linear path length gradient between them. The length and the length gradient of the contralateral projection increase from hatchling to 2-4 weeks. Synchronou

BACKGROUND: Monoaminergic systems, as some other neuromodulators, exert modulatory influences across the entire central nervous system (CNS), participating in basic neurobiological processes, behavioural traits, neuropsychiatric diseases, and responses to psychotropic drugs. Their activity is supposedly balanced across the CNS i.e. a change of input in one region could alter their activities at distal regions. Unfortunately, there are a few attempts to determine the neurochemical relationships between local or distal regions.
NEW METHOD: In this review article, we present the technical requir

This perspective highlights new work suggesting the need for revision of the canonical direct-indirect model of the basal ganglia's influence on movement, with fresh evidence that there is a formerly unappreciated pair of direct and indirect pathways that parallel the standard model's canonical direct and indirect pathways, and promising evidence pointing toward improved clinical treatments for Parkinson's disease. As a working hypothesis, it is suggested that the non-canonical direct and indirect pathways, which arise in striosomes, might act as homeostatic circuits that can reign in or ampli
