Neurofibromas are benign neoplasms that are usually seen in hereditary disorders such as von Recklinghausen's disease [neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1)]. The occurrence of isolated ileal neurofibroma in patients without the classic manifestations of NF1 or multiple endocrine neoplasia (MEN) syndromes is an extremely rare entity . We report one such case of isolated ileal neurofibroma in a 60 year old woman without any other stigmata of NF. It may be the initial manifestation of NF1 or MEN 2b or malignant transformation, all of which necessitate further follow-up of these patients.

Schwannomatosis is characterized by multiple non-intradermal schwannomas with patients often presenting with a painful mass in their extremities. In this syndrome malignant transformation of schwannomas is rare in spite of their large size at presentation. Non-invasive measures of assessing the biological behavior of plexiform neurofibromas in neurofibromatosis type 1 such as positron emission tomography (PET), CT scanning and MRI are well characterized but little information has been published on the use of PET imaging in schwannomatosis. We report a unique clinical presentation portraying th

Schwannomatosis is the third major form of neurofibromatosis, distinct from neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2) and type 1 (NF1). This condition is rare with a variable phenotypic presentation and complex molecular and genetic findings. In this case, a previously healthy teenager was found to have multiple spinal lesions and an enhancing right parotid mass on MRI. On extensive further work-up, this patient met the existing clinical criteria for schwannomatosis. This case report aims to review the clinical features and current diagnostic criteria for schwannomatosis and compare it to NF1 and NF2. Sp

Neurofibromatosis-Noonan syndrome (NFNS) is a distinct entity which shows the features of both NF1 (neurofibromatosis 1) and Noonan syndrome (NS). While growth hormone deficiency (GHD) has been relatively frequently identified in NF1 and NS patients, there is limited experience in NFNS cases. The literature includes only one case report of a NFNS patient having GHD and that report primarily focuses on the dermatological lesions that accompany the syndrome and not on growth hormone (GH) treatment. Here, we present a 13-year-old girl who had clinical features of NFNS with a mutation in the NF1 g

INTRODUCTION: Neurofibromatosis type 2 is characterized by the presence of bilateral vestibular schwannomas. However, other nervous system tumors may also occur. Therefore, the management of NF2 patients is complex and requires a multidisciplinary discussion in a specialized center.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: All recent articles concerning tumors other than vestibular schwannoma in NF2 disease were reviewed, using PubMed databases.
RESULTS: Intracranial meningiomas occur in 50% of NF2 patients, and are often multiple. Surgery remains the main treatment and should be performed in cases of growing

BACKGROUND: Surgical treatment for severe circumferentially fixed cervical kyphosis has been challenging. Both anterior and posterior releases are necessary to provide the cervical mobility necessary for fusion in a corrected position.
OBJECTIVE: In two case reports, we describe the circumferential osteotomy of anterior-posterior-anterior surgical sequence, and the efficacy of this technique when cervical pedicle screw fixation for severe fixed cervical kyphosis is used.
CASE DESCRIPTION: Etiology of fixed cervical kyphosis was unknown in one patient and neurofibromatosis in one patient. Bot

Neurofibromatosis within the female genital tract is uncommon. The vulva is the most frequent genital location, but it has rarely been reported in the context of the vagina, uterine cervix or ovaries. In spite of its rarity, neurofibroma is a neoplasm that should be considered in the differential diagnosis of pelvic masses, especially in patients with neurofibromatosis. In this paper we describe the case of a 71-year-old patient with pelvic pain and a uterine mass who underwent a hysterectomy after having been diagnosed with an 11-cm neurofibroma occupying the myometrium of the entire uterine

Brain development in neurodevelopmental disorders has been considered to comprise a sequence of critical periods, and abnormalities occurring during early development have been considered irreversible in adulthood. However, findings in mouse models of neurodevelopmental disorders, including fragile X, Rett syndrome, Down syndrome, and neurofibromatosis type I suggest that it is possible to reverse certain molecular, electrophysiological, and behavioral deficits associated with these disorders in adults by genetic or pharmacological manipulations. Furthermore, recent studies have suggested that

In this article, we describe unilateral gynecomastia and pseudoangiomatous stromal hyperplasia (PASH) in a case of type-1 neurofibromatosis (NF-1). It is important to distinguish PASH from fibroadenoma clinically, and from true blood capillaries and angiosarcoma histologically. In the present case, giant multinucleated cells lined the pseudovascular spaces, which was markedly different from that of conventional breast PASH. The origin of PASH has been reported to be either the fibroblast or the myofibroblast phenotype and may be affected by endocrine signaling because many cases have been repo

We report the detailed clinical presentation and molecular features of a spinal neurofibromatosis familial case where a 40-year-old woman, presenting with multiple bilateral spinal neurofibromas and no other clinical feature of neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1), inherited a paternal large multiexonic deletion (c.5944-?_7126+?del) which resulted in NF1 gene haploinsufficiency at the RNA level. In the clinically unaffected 73-year-old father, spinal cord MRI disclosed bilateral and symmetrical hypertrophy of spinal lumbosacral roots. Our study widens the phenotypic and mutational spectrum of NF1 an

In this article hereditary genodermatoses with cancer predisposition are reviewed, including nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome, neurofibromatosis types 1 and 2, tuberous sclerosis complex, xeroderma pigmentosum, and dyskeratosis congenita. Hereditary melanoma is also included, though it differs from the others in several respects. The underlying genetic aberrations causing these syndromes are largely known, allowing novel treatments to be developed for some of these disorders. Early recognition and diagnosis allows for close follow-up and surveillance for associated malignancies.

The female genital system is rarely affected in von Recklinghausen neurofibromatosis. The vulva is the most frequent genital location, but vaginal, cervical, uterine, and ovarian neurofibromas have rarely been reported. We describe a case of plexiform neurofibroma affecting the uterine cervix in a patient with chronic pelvic pain and menorrhagia who had multiple cutaneous neurofibromas and 1 large paraspinal neurofibroma. A small plexiform neurofibroma, which was not grossly visible, was confined to the uterine cervix and coexisted with a uterine leiomyoma and adenomyosis. There were no neurof

Our aim is to illustrate the contribution of MRI to diagnosis of lesions of the lower-limb nerve trunks. We report six patients who had clinical and electrophysiological examination for a peroneal or tibial nerve palsy. MRI of the knee showed in three cases a nonenhancing cystic lesion of the peroneal nerve suggesting an intraneural ganglion cyst, confirmed by histological study in one case. One patient with known neurofibromatosis had an enhancing nodular lesion of the peroneal nerve compatible with a neurofibroma. Two patients had diffuse hypertrophy with high signal on T2-weighted images, w

A known case of early carcinoma cervix was found to have mediastinal widening on chest radiograph and hypoechoic oval retroperitoneal lesions on USG abdomen. CECT chest and abdomen showed these to be non enhancing lymph node like round to oval discrete mass lesions in mediastinum, abdomen and pelvis. With no other suggestion of carcinoma spread, local or distant and uncommon incidence of extensive lymphadenopathy in a early carcinoma cervix, biopsy from one of the representative lesion was performed which revealed it to be benign neurofibroma. Differentiation of these strategically located ben

Neurofibromatosis Type 1 and 2 (NF1 und NF2) are different forms of neurofibromatosis, well defined both clinically and genetically. In absence of typical clinical features of NF1 (café-au-lait-spots, cutaneous neurofibromas, Lisch-nodules) or NF2 (vestibular schwanoma) clinical classification is often not possible. Neurofibromas are more common in NF1 and schwannomas are typical for NF2, but pathological histology does not provide sufficient evidence for diagnosis. We describe 14 patients who presented with the clinical picture of multiple spinal tumours. Detailed family history, exact clinic

Single strand conformation analysis has become the most widely used technique to screen large numbers of DNA samples for unknown mutations which may contribute to genetic susceptibility to disease. The method relies on the electrophoretic migration of a single strand of nucleic acid in a polyacrylamide gel being dependent on its conformation which is in turn dependent on its sequence. We have examined two closely related genes present in the first intron of the neurofibromatosis type I gene--the oligodendrocyte myelin glycoprotein (OMGP) gene and the ecotropic viral integration 2A (EVI2A) gene
