[Isolation of Mycobacterium avium complex from the "24-hour bath"].

The "24-HOUR BATH" is an apparatus which circulates the bath water, keeps it clean and warm, and makes it possible to take a bath at any time during the day or night. It consists of apparatus for cleaning (sponge or mesh filter and filter material), heating (ceramic heater), and sterilizing (UV lamp). Recently, three cases of skin disease due to M. avium infection in private homes, in which "24-HOUR BATH" water was suspected to be the source of infection, have been reported. We attempted to isolate M. avium complex from the water (32 specimens), sponge filter (29 specimens), and filter materia

Understanding the role of vanadium: insights into bacterial responses and adaptations.

Vanadium (V) is a critical and important metal used in various industries, but its accumulation in the environment poses a risk and can lead to pollution. The study of microorganisms for metal recycling in renewable biotechnologies has attracted significant research interest. However, there is limited information on the interaction between V and bacteria. The present paper aims to summarize advancements made in the last 5 years (2020-2025) by systematically reviewing articles that mention V. We analyzed a total of 347 articles, ultimately focusing on 45 relevant studies from three different da

Mechanisms of alleviating sepsis-induced rat lung and kidney damage by inhibiting expression of miRNA-939.

INTRODUCTION: Sepsis, a life-threatening condition caused by a host response that goes out of control, leads to severe organ dysfunction. MicroRNA 939 (miRNA-939) plays a pivotal role in this process by post-transcriptionally regulating the mRNA expression of key enzymes in the NO/cGMP pathway. This pathway is crucial in the development of refractory hypotension and organ failure in sepsis. The aim of the study was to explore the effects of miRNA-939 on a caecum ligation puncture (CLP) rat model of sepsis in kidneys and lungs in order to elucidate its role in modulating the NO/cGMP pathway and

α-Lipoic Acid Strengthens the Antioxidant Barrier and Reduces Oxidative, Nitrosative, and Glycative Damage, as well as Inhibits Inflammation and Apoptosis in the Hypothalamus but Not in the Cerebral Cortex of Insulin-Resistant Rats.

The research determined the role of α-lipoic acid (ALA) in reducing the brain manifestations of insulin resistance. The mechanism of ALA action is mainly based on its ability to "scavenge" oxygen free radicals and stimulate biosynthesis of reduced glutathione (GSH), considered the most critical brain antioxidant. Although the protective effect of ALA is widely documented in various diseases, there are still no studies assessing the influence of ALA on brain metabolism in the context of insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. The experiment was conducted on male Wistar rats fed a high-fat diet

Leaf plasticity to light intensity in Italian cypress (Cupressus sempervirens L.): adaptability of a Mediterranean conifer cultivated in the Alps.

Italian cypress (Cupressus sempervirens L.) is native to the eastern Mediterranean, an area characterised by hot, dry summers and mild winters. Over the centuries, however, the species has been introduced into more northerly regions, a long way from its native range. The current, generally warmer climatic conditions brought about by global warming have favoured its cultivation in even more northerly areas in the Alps and other European alpine regions. Given that not only temperature, but also light availability are limiting factors for the spread of cypress in these environments, it is importa

Pharmacologic Management of Portal Hypertension.

Terlipressin, somatostatin, or octreotide are recommended as pharmacologic treatment of acute variceal hemorrhage. Nonselective β-blockers decrease the risk of variceal hemorrhage and hepatic decompensation, particularly in those 30% to 40% of patients with good hemodynamic response. Carvedilol, statins, and anticoagulants are promising agents in the management of portal hypertension. Recent advances in the pharmacologic treatment of portal hypertension have mainly focused on modifying an increased intrahepatic resistance through nitric oxide and/or modulation of vasoactive substances. Several

Heart Failure with Preserved Ejection Fraction.

Heart failure (HF) is a clinical syndrome of diverse etiologies and can be associated with preserved, reduced, or mid-range ejection fraction (EF). In the community, heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) is emerging as the most common form of HF. There remains considerable uncertainty regarding its pathogenesis, diagnosis, and optimal therapeutic approach. Hypotheses have been advanced to explain the underlying pathophysiology responsible for HFpEF, but to date, no specific therapy based on these hypotheses has been proven to improve outcomes in HFpEF. We provide a clinically

An update on management of the patient presenting with non-ST-elevation acute coronary syndromes.

Over 780,000 patients in the United States are diagnosed with an acute coronary syndrome (ACS) each year. As physicians, it is our responsibility to provide prompt workup, diagnosis and management of these patients. After identification of the patient with ACS and confirming there is not ST-segment elevation MI requiring immediate revascularization, physicians should pursue a work-up for non-ST-elevation acute coronary syndrome (NSTE-ACS). It is important to understand the latest best practice guidelines in the treatment and management of patients with NSTE-ACS who carry high rates of in-hospi

[Foxtail millet SiSPX5 negatively regulates the signaling and metabolism of nitrogen and phosphorus].

The synergistic uptake of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) is essential for plant growth, development, and adaptation to environmental stressors. The SPX family proteins are key regulators of the P-starvation response, while their roles in the coordinated regulation of N and P remain unclear. To systematically elucidate the molecular mechanisms by which foxtail millet (Setaria italica) SPX family genes mediate the synergistic uptake of nitrogen and phosphorus, and to characterize their regulatory effects on plant growth and development, we cloned SiSPX5, and systematically characterized its bio

Simulated acid rain (SAR) induced alterations in plant morpho-physiology, leaf ultrastructure, cell viability, and yield - A case study on Mentha arvensis L. (Wild mint).

Acid rain (AR), a secondary pollutant, a product of sulfur and nitrogen oxides fusion with the atmosphere's water vapor, comes on earth in the form of rain, poses a significant environmental threat, and affects soil characteristics and plant morphology, ultrastructure, physiology, and yield. However, its effects on aromatic and medicinal plants remain insufficiently studied. Due to their low side effects and high efficacy, the use of herbal plants for disease remedy preparation is found globally and their consumption increases year after year. Mentha arvensis is such an aromatic crop, having g

Resolving complexity in the interactions of redox enzymes and their inhibitors: contrasting mechanisms for the inhibition of a cytochrome c nitrite reductase revealed by protein film voltammetry.

Cytochrome c nitrite reductase is a dimeric decaheme-containing enzyme that catalyzes the reduction of nitrite to ammonium. The contrasting effects of two inhibitors on the activity of this enzyme have been revealed, and defined, by protein film voltammetry (PFV). Azide inhibition is rapid and reversible. Variation of the catalytic current magnitude describes mixed inhibition in which azide binds to the Michaelis complex (approximately 40 mM) with a lower affinity than to the enzyme alone (approximately 15 mM) and leads to complete inhibition of enzyme activity. The position of the catalytic w

Effects of Water and Nitrogen Regulation on Alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) Production Performance Through Optimization of Nitrogen Metabolism.

Water and nitrogen application rates directly affect crop yield formation and protein accumulation. Nitrogen metabolism, as a key physiological process linking water and nitrogen supply with crop growth, plays a critical role in regulating nitrogen uptake, transformation, and accumulation. However, the functional relationships among different nitrogen metabolism indicators in mediating the formation of high-quality and high-yield alfalfa under water-nitrogen regulation remain unclear. In this study, alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) was subjected to four nitrogen application levels [N0 (0 kg·hm-2),

Crosstalk of hydrogen sulfide and nitric oxide requires calcium to mitigate impaired photosynthesis under cadmium stress by activating defense mechanisms in Vigna radiata.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and nitric oxide (NO) have been known to affect vast number of processes in plants under abiotic stresses. Also, calcium (Ca) works as a second messenger in plants, which underpins the abiotic stress-induced damage. However, the sequence of action of these signaling molecules against cadmium (Cd)-induced cellular oxidative damage remains unidentified. Therefore, we studied the synergistic actions and/or relationship of signaling molecules and Ca-dependent activation of tolerance mechanisms in Vigna radiata seedlings under Cd stress. The present study shows that exogenous
