[One-year experience of Men's Outpatient Health Care Unit without specifying the category of disease].

The Men's Outpatient Health Care Unit was established in April 2006 in Kyoto City Hospital. In this outpatient unit, medical services are provided to males of all ages and with any category of complaints. For patients' privacy, the unit is situated on a different floor from the other outpatient ward, and all-male staff handles from reservation to examination. Furthermore, each patient is given 30 minutes to provide enough time for counseling and examination. To our knowledge, this system was established for the first time in Japan. During the first one year, a total of 106 new patients visited

Usability assessment for cave automatic virtual environment-based immersive education system on novice nurses and nursing students: A mixed methods study.

BACKGROUND: Nurses are the primary implementers of enteral nutrition therapy and need to be trained in relevant skills, especially in the care of critically ill patients with neurological damage. Traditional educational methods fail to present the complex changes in the condition of critically ill patients and therefore do not meet current educational and practice requirements. The effectiveness of virtual reality (VR) in nursing education has been demonstrated. However, there is a paucity of evidence for using cave automatic virtual environment (CAVE), a novel VR technology, in nursing educat

Adoption and cancer survivors: Findings from a learning activity for oncology nurses.

BACKGROUND: To the authors' knowledge, little is known regarding the rate at which cancer survivors successfully adopt a child or about their experiences negotiating a costly, and perhaps discriminatory, process regarding the prospective parent's health history. The current study describes the results of a learning activity in which nurses contacted an adoption agency to learn more about the process for survivors with the goal of helping nurses provide patients with accurate information for making a well-informed decision regarding adoption. METHODS: Training program participants identified a

Assessing health needs in people with severe learning disabilities: a qualitative approach.

The nursing assessment, and the contribution it makes to the identification of an individual's health needs, is often a complex and multidimensional process. This is always true when the individual concerned has a severe learning disability. The nurse should develop the assessment in partnership with individuals who may experience major communication difficulties, or have unappreciated levels of perceptual or cognitive dysfunction. They may also live with the ongoing possibility that their affective or behavioural responses may be misinterpreted as 'challenging behaviour'. This case study focu

Hypertrophy of the Annular Ligament as a Cause of Painful Elbow Snapping: Case Report and Literature Review.

Snapping annular ligament is an uncommon cause of lateral elbow pain. Due to the limited literature, snapping annular ligament is often misdiagnosed as lateral epicondylitis. Recognition of this uncommon condition is important as early surgical intervention is recommended to prevent erosion of articular cartilage caused by the hypertrophic synovial fold and early-onset arthritis. We present a 37-year-old male with left lateral elbow pain and clicking for 5 years. MRI of the elbow revealed hypertrophy of the annular ligament with associated lateral epicondylitis. After failing conservative mana

The co-existence of life and death for the perioperative nurse.

Death and life co-exist in organ procurement surgery; untimely death for one provides hope for continued life for others. Drawing from interactionist theory, the impact of personal and environmental forces and functions specific to organ procurement surgery were examined. Seven nurses (6 women, 1 man aged 34-58 years) were provided with an opportunity to describe their experiences. Three core themes emerged from the qualitative analysis of the interviews: existential issues, coping strategies, and support for each other. Nurses spoke of ways in which they contribute to this challenging work an

Student/staff collaboration: a pilot bowel management program.

1. Poor bowel elimination and constipation plague many individuals with advanced age. Moreover, the use of laxatives as the panacea for these concerns is far too common. 2. A successful bowel management program was implemented at the study facility through the collaborative efforts of baccalaureate nursing students and nursing home staff members. 3. The bowel management protocol involved increasing the amount of fiber, fluids, and exercise for each resident in the study. 4. The program demonstrated a definite decrease in the number of laxatives used by the subjects as well as an increase in th

Nursing Understanding and Perceptions of Delirium: Assessing Current Knowledge, Attitudes, and Beliefs in a Burn ICU.

The number of delirium days in hospitalized patients directly correlates with mortality and long-term cognitive dysfunction. Burn patients are at greater risk for delirium due to prolonged mechanical ventilation, high sedative and analgesic medication requirements, and the common need for multiple operations. Limited research exists on nurses' understanding and comfort using delirium screening tools and preventive interventions. A process improvement project was developed in a single, regional burn intensive care unit (BICU) with the goal of increasing RN staff awareness of delirium, delirium
