Current practice and policy realities revisited: undertrained nursing home social workers in the U.S.

Despite a nearly 20-year-old legislation to strengthen social work (SW) coverage within nursing homes and decades of literature exploring the need for SW training, untrained and undertrained social workers dominate American nursing homes. Many persons who call themselves social workers are not educated as such, but nevertheless, must work in complex, conflict-ridden nursing homes without assessment and advocacy skills essential to address the symptoms and to fully respond to subjugated residents' needs. The call for more qualified social workers to be employed in nursing homes is a recognition

Essentials of environmental health. Enhancing your occupational health nursing practice (Part II).

1. In the United States, approximately 24 million people use water daily from unregulated water supplies. Agents of water pollution can be categorized as biological (e.g., Cryptosporidium parvum), chemical (e.g., industrial solvents), or radionuclide (e.g., radon). 2. More than 600 chemicals are registered with the Environmental Protection Agency as pesticides in the United States. Human exposure occurs through direct contact or dermal absorption, inhalation, and ingestion of food, water, and breast milk. It is estimated that 50% of all the pesticides ingested in a lifetime are ingested in the

Comprehensive assessment of AIDS patients using the behavioural systems model for nursing practice instrument.

The major changes resulting from the AIDS diagnosis and illness were measured, described and classified in the Behavioural Systems Model's eight subsystems--achievement, affiliative, aggressiveness/protectiveness, dependence, ingestive, eliminative, restorative and sexual. Thirty male AIDS patients with Kaposi's Sarcoma were drawn as a convenience sample from a major medical centre's outpatient clinic. The subjects self-rated their perceived changes in the above eight major areas, using a 140-item instrument (DBSM) consisting of 24 categories of changes distributed in the above eight areas. Pa

Assessment of nursing students' readiness to end-of-life-care after 40-hours practical classes including storytelling: a quasi-experimental multi-methods pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Nursing students often feel unprepared to provide care for terminally ill patients, particularly in palliative settings. The emotional demands of end-of-life care require nurses to develop not only clinical skills, but also emotional resilience and effective communication. Equally important is a holistic approach that considers the physical, psychological, social, and spiritual needs of patients and their families. Storytelling as an educational tool has been shown to enhance empathy and understanding among nursing students and provides them with skills to navigate the complex emot

General HIV-Related Knowledge and Attitudes Among Nurses and Nursing Students: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis with Narrative Synthesis of Clinical Practices (2011-2026).

Background/Objectives: Nurses and nursing students are central to HIV prevention and care, but studies of their general HIV-related knowledge, attitudes, and practices use heterogeneous populations, instruments, scoring systems, and thresholds. This review had three objectives: (1) to meta-analyze, separately, the prevalence of study-defined high/good general HIV knowledge, mean general knowledge scores, prevalence of study-defined positive/favorable general attitudes, and mean favorable-attitude scores; (2) to synthesize HIV-related clinical-practice findings narratively when measures were no

Transferability of nurse-led interventions for cardiovascular health across diverse nursing roles in primary and community settings: Practice implications and solutions from a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Although nurse-led interventions are increasingly recognised as effective in managing cardiovascular risk factors, a comprehensive synthesis is needed to support their widespread implementation across healthcare systems. OBJECTIVE: This scoping review aimed to synthesise evidence to answer key questions: 1) Why do some nurse-led care models in primary and community settings succeed while others do not? 2) Which specific components of nurse-led interventions impact clinical outcomes? 3) What concerns exist about transferring these interventions to real-world settings, and what are
