BACKGROUND: The developmental origins of health and disease (DOHaD) framework highlights the importance of the intrauterine environment in shaping lifelong health outcomes. Maternal nutrition, toxic exposures, and epigenetic reprogramming are key factors influencing offspring susceptibility to obesity and cardiometabolic disorders. However, prior reviews have typically addressed nutrition and toxicants separately, limiting insights into their combined effects on the fetal epigenome. This review integrates current evidence on how maternal nutrition and toxicant exposures converge through epigen

Food and nutrition-related factors, including foods and nutrients consumed, dietary patterns, use of dietary supplements, adiposity, and exposure to food-related environmental contaminants, have the potential to impact semen quality and male and female fertility; obstetric, fetal, and birth outcomes; and the health of future generations, but gaps in evidence remain. On 9 November 2022, Tufts University's Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy and the school's Food and Nutrition Innovation Institute hosted a 1-d meeting to explore the evidence and evidence gaps regarding the relationsh

Bone marrow transplantation is often associated with multiple organ failure which is usually reversible. Oral mucositis and dysphagia, vomiting, diarrhoea, protein losing enteropathy, transient exocrine pancreatic impairment, hypoalbuminaemia, biochemical trace element and mineral deficiencies are all common following transplantation and have profound nutritional consequences. Malnutrition affects negatively the clinical outcome. Nutritional support is provided to malnourished patients and those who suffer deterioration in nutritional status despite the provision of dietetic counselling. Only

BACKGROUND: The aim was to evaluate the effects of current parenteral nutrition (PN) treatment on clinical outcomes in patients with advanced cancer.
METHODS: This review was conducted according to the PRISMA guidelines (PROSPERO ID: 4201707915).
RESULTS: Two underpowered randomized controlled trials and six observational studies were retrieved (n = 894 patients). Health-related quality of life and physical function may improve during anti-neoplastic treatment in who PN treatment is the only feeding opportunity, but not necessarily in patients able to feed enterally. Nutritional status may i

A literature review was conducted to investigate the status of vitamins and minerals in children with cerebral palsy and the implications of various deficiencies on health outcomes. Children with cerebral palsy commonly have feeding difficulties, which significantly impact their growth, general health, and life expectancy. Current nutritional literature focuses on energy expenditure, with little information available on other parameters, such as micronutrient status. Due to the paucity of micronutrient research in these children, the impacts of deficiencies and benefits in other populations ha

The effect of malnutrition in patients with a variety of ailments is known to be deleterious to their overall quality of life, response and tolerance to therapy, and ultimate survival. These effects may be amplified in feline patients with infectious disease owing to the blunting of immunologic responsiveness that results from malnutrition. This vicious cycle of infection, ensuing malnutrition, and subsequent immunocompromise may not allow the patient to mount an attack on the invading pathogen adequately. The most logical means to reverse this cycle is to ensure an adequate nutritional state

Serial anthropometrics, creatinine-height ratios. serum albumin levels, and elemental balances were compared for cachectic cancer and noncancer patients receiving hyperalimentation. Cancer patients compared unfavorably in all measurements except triceps skinfold increments, which were equal for both groups, suggesting that weight gain in cancer patients represented repletion of fat rather than restoration of normal lean body mass.

The term neuronutrition has been proposed as part of nutritional neuroscience, studying the effects of various dietary components on behavior and cognition. Other researchers underline that neuronutrition includes the use of various nutrients and diets to prevent and treat neurological disorders. The aim of this narrative review was to explore the current understanding of the term neuronutrition as the key concept for brain health, its potential molecular targets, and perspectives of its nutritional approach to the prevention and treatment of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases, multiple scle

Eating disorders are complex diseases with multifactorial causes. According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders text version (DSM-5-TR) and the WHO International Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD-11), the major types of eating disorders include anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge eating disorder. The prevalence of eating disorders is alarmingly increasing globally. Moreover, the COVID-19 pandemic has led to more development and worsening of eating disorders. Patients with eating disorders exhibit high rates of psychiatric comorbiditie

The Italian Society of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (SIGENP) recognized the need to define research priorities and identify knowledge gaps to guide future investigations in pediatric digestive health. Following international examples, SIGENP aimed to provide a structured framework that aligns scientific innovation with clinical relevance and patient-centered outcomes. This narrative review represents the consensus output of SIGENP's thematic working groups (WGs) in key fields-inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, Hepatology, Nutrition and Intesti

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Ultra-processed foods (UPF) are increasingly prevalent in modern diets and are associated with negative health outcomes such as chronic diseases due to their high processing and low nutrient density. Despite the potential impact of UPF intake during pregnancy on maternal and child health, studies in this area are limited. Therefore, this narrative comprehensive review aimed to identify associations between UPF consumption, categorized by the NOVA system, during pregnancy and maternal and child health outcomes over the past five years (2019-2024).
METHODS: Following PRISMA-S

BACKGROUND: Parenteral nutrition (PN) plays a crucial role in nutrition support therapy, yet data on related adverse events (AEs) in practical settings are scarce. To address this, we analyzed AE signals associated with PN treatment from the United States Food and Drug Administration Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) database.
METHODS: We extracted data from the FAERS database, covering the period from the first quarter (Q1) of 2004 to Q1 of 2024. Drug names and AEs were standardized. We then conducted disproportionality analyses using four different algorithms to evaluate the associatio

Epidemiological studies have shown that periods of poor nutrition during pregnancy can lead to an increased risk of metabolic and psychiatric disorders in the offspring. In addition, some individuals with disorders such as schizophrenia show signs of impaired insulin signalling. These findings indicate that there may be a link between metabolism and neuronal function and they also provide supporting evidence for neurodevelopmental origins of mental illness. This chapter gives a detailed protocol for generation of the maternal low-protein (LP) rat model, which leads to metabolic disturbances in

Commentary is provided on the pivotal paper by Weinsier and Krumdieck from 1981 describing 2 patients who developed profound and fatal refeeding syndrome following initiation of aggressive total parenteral nutrition. This classic description was among the first to describe the overwhelming cardiovascular and pulmonary manifestations that can accompany parenteral refeeding with carbohydrate in chronically malnourished patients. The syndrome has also been described with oral and enteral nutrition. One of the hallmarks of the syndrome is hypophosphatemia. Since 1981, dosing schemes for addressing

In decompensated liver cirrhosis, all effort should be made to maintain normal nutritional status so long as possible. Early nutritional assessment and dietetic intervention in the management of malnutrition, encephalopathy, ascites, infection and bleeding from gastrointestinal tract markedly decreases mortality and improves survival after liver transplantation in this group of patients.

The Nutrition Committee of the Austrian Pediatric Society recommends that weaning foods should be introduced between 4 and 6 months of age, which agrees with the recommendations in the EC and the U.S. Opinion against early introduction of solid foods have focused on concerns about renal solute load, obesity, coeliac disease, and food allergy. On the other hand, when weaning was postponed after 6 months of age, growth faltering in some breastfed infants and iron-deficiency anemia in infants fed non-fortified formulas or cow's milk were observed. Two broad categories--"baby foods" and "cereal-ba

Enteral hyperalimentation in four patients with severe alcoholic hepatitis and anorexia increased spontaneous food intake, increased their nitrogen balance and the patients improved clinically. Seven patients with alcoholic hepatitis, who were clinically ill and able to eat only 410-1,100 calories per day, were given a 900 mosM/l. parenteral "hyperalimentation" solution by a peripheral vein (P-900). The intravenous nutrition provided daily 51.6-77.4 gm. amino acids in addition to oral intake. All patients improved. None developed detectable encephalopathy after 16-42 days of P-900 therapy. Fiv
