OBJECTIVES: To evaluate nutritional status, dietary intake, nutrition knowledge, and depression of healthy urban men with chronic spinal cord injury (SCI) and to compare these findings with national guidelines and data.

Forty-three patients averaging 28.2 (range 16--74) years with open fractures of the lower limbs were studied prospectively for 40 weeks using anthropometrical, biochemical and haematological parameters to ascertain their relationship to wound healing following injury. Nearly half (21/43) of the patients were malnourished at admission and the number increased to 22 a week after injury. We assessed nutritional status in 200 adult Tanzanian patients with smear-positive pulmonary tuberculosis before, during, and after 6 months of tuberculosis treatment; 148 patients (74%) were successfully followed for 12 months. The plasma concentration of INH and streptomycin was followed in 45 Ethiopian children with tuberculosis. The children were grouped according to their nutritional status as normal, underweight, marasm and kwashiorkor. Dietary intake and nutritional status in regard to zinc were assessed in 65 institutionalized aged subjects. Dietary intake was generally adequate compared to the Recommended Dietary Allowances, except in regard to zinc and magnesium.
