Impact of a synchronous prophylactic treatment of the anterior accessory saphenous vein on the recurrent varicose vein rate in patients undergoing thermal ablation of an insufficient great saphenous vein (SYNCHRONOUS-Study): study protocol for a prospective, multicentre, controlled observational study.

INTRODUCTION: To date, there are no prospective studies evaluating the prevention of recurrent veins by the simultaneous treatment of a sufficient anterior accessory saphenous vein (AASV) in patients undergoing endovenous laser ablation (EVLA) of an insufficient great saphenous vein (GSV). This study will provide important information about the impact of the AASV on the development of recurrent veins after EVLA of the GSV. Additionally, it will be clarified whether patients benefit from a preventive ablation of a sufficient AASV. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This is a multicentre, prospective, contr

Intensive care with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation rewarming in accident severe hypothermia (ICE-CRASH) study: a protocol for a multicentre prospective, observational study in Japan.

INTRODUCTION: Accidental hypothermia (AH) is a rare but critical disease, leading to death in severe cases. In recent decades, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) has been successfully used to rewarm hypothermic patients with cardiac arrest or circulation instability. However, data on the efficacy of rewarming using ECMO for patients with AH are limited. Therefore, a large-scale, multicentre, prospective study is warranted. The primary objective of this study will be to clarify the effectiveness of rewarming using ECMO for patients with AH. Our secondary objectives will be to compare th

The World Heart Federation Global Study on COVID-19 and Cardiovascular Disease.

BACKGROUND: The emergence of novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome-Coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2), has presented an unprecedented global challenge for the healthcare community. The ability of SARS-CoV-2 to get transmitted during the asymptomatic phase, and its high infectivity have led to the rapid transmission of COVID-19 beyond geographic regions facilitated by international travel, leading to a pandemic. To guide effective control and interventions, primary data is required urgently, globally, including from low- and middle-income countries w

Natural direct effects of vaccines and post-vaccination behaviour.

Knowledge of the protection afforded by vaccines might, in some circumstances, modify a vaccinated individual's behaviour, potentially increasing exposure to pathogens and hindering effectiveness. This possibility is usually left unaddressed in vaccine effectiveness studies. Here, we argue that effects of vaccines on disease when their influence on behaviour is blocked are relevant. This type of effect corresponds, by definition, to natural direct effects. There are, however, practical complications for the estimation of natural direct effects in this context. Here, we discuss some of these is
