A job-exposure matrix for research and surveillance of occupational health and safety in Spanish workers: MatEmESp.

BACKGROUND: In this study we describe a general-population job-exposure matrix (MatEmESp) for Spanish workers covering the period 1996-2005. METHODS: The Finnish job-exposure matrix (FINJEM) provided the default value estimates for occupational exposure to chemical, physical and biological agents. These estimates were adapted to Spanish working conditions by local experts. Spanish surveys were used to obtain exposure estimates for ergonomic and psychosocial risk factors. Employment and socio-demographic conditions for Spanish workers were obtained from the Spanish National Statistics Institut

A review of health effects of carbon disulfide in viscose industry and a proposal for an occupational exposure limit.

Occupational exposure limits (OELs) for carbon disulfide vary between 1 and 10 ppm worldwide. They are generally based on health effects observed in viscose industry. Publications after the mid-1970s are reviewed to determine whether there is a scientific justification for an OEL below 10 ppm. The exposure situation in viscose industry is governed by long exposure durations, high exposures in past decades, high peak exposures, former analytical procedures underestimating exposure, and shift work. Three approaches were used to define an OEL based on workplace data: (1) Division of a cumulative

The expanding roles and occupational characteristics of medical assistants: overview of an emerging field in allied health.

Medical assistants are the fastest growing segment of primary care teams. Remarkably little is known about this emerging workforce. In this report, we present information based on a literature review, analysis of secondary workforce data, and interviews with key experts in the field that aim to highlight the basic aspects of medical assistants and discuss issues that need to be addressed in this rapidly growing occupation in the allied health workforce. Critical policy issues are raised about the future impact of a largely unregulated workforce as well as the potential impact of this field on

An occupational health intervention programme for workers at risk for early retirement; a randomised controlled trial.

AIMS: To evaluate an occupational health intervention programme for workers at risk for early retirement. METHODS: Between April 1997 and May 1998, 116 employees of a large company who were older than 50 years indicated that they would not be able to work up to their retirement. They were randomly assigned to an intervention (n = 61) or control group (n = 55). The intervention programme lasted six months and was executed by an occupational physician. Job position and number of sick leave days after two years were collected from the company's computer database. A questionnaire was sent to the …

Ionizing radiation. An overview for the occupational health nurse. Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry.

1. Everyone is exposed to ionizing radiation. Approximately 82% of this exposure is natural background from cosmic and terrestrial sources, and 18% is due to man made sources. 2. Public exposure to ionizing radiation or contamination of the environment by radioactivity engenders intense fear. The emotional and psychologic stresses resulting from exposure should be recognized and addressed early in a radiation incident. 3. Health care providers should understand the physics, chemistry, and biology of radiation to communicate effectively about it.

Contribution of job-exposure matrices for exposure assessment in occupational safety and health monitoring systems: application from the French national occupational disease surveillance and prevention network.

OBJECTIVES: To detect new hazards ("signals"), occupational health monitoring systems mostly rest on the description of exposures in the jobs held and on reports by medical doctors; these are subject to declarative bias. Our study aims to assess whether job-exposure matrices (JEMs) could be useful tools for signal detection by improving exposure reporting. METHODS: Using the French national occupational disease surveillance and prevention network (RNV3P) data from 2001 to 2011, we explored the associations between disease and exposure prevalence for 3 well-known pathology/exposure couples and…

Claim Costs, Musculoskeletal Health, and Work Exposure in Physical Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Physical Therapist Assistants, and Occupational Therapist Assistants: A Comparison Among Long-Term Care Jobs.

BACKGROUND: Patient/resident-handling tasks are physically demanding and associated with musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) among nursing personnel. The routine performance of such tasks by physical therapists and occupational therapists during treatment can cause similar problems. OBJECTIVE: This study characterized the magnitude of MSDs and the risk factors for MSDs in physical therapists, occupational therapists, physical therapist assistants, and occupational therapist assistants (collectively called "therapy personnel" for this study) and compared them with those of other nursing home work

Impact of asbestos on public health: a retrospective study on a series of subjects with occupational and non-occupational exposure to asbestos during the activity of Fibronit plant (Broni, Italy).

The goal of this study is to understand more about the role of asbestos in causing human diseases, first of all mesothelioma, by investigating a large series of deaths due to asbestos-related diseases (ARDs). The main aim is to clarify if even very low amounts of asbestos can cause mesothelioma and other ARDs, as well as to find out if a different individual vulnerability can be important. This retrospective study included 188 subjects who died from asbestos related diseases in 2000-2017 in the area around Broni, Italy, where an important asbestos cement factory had been active from 1932 until
