"Examining the link between tooth agenesis and papillary thyroid cancer: is there a risk factor?" Observational study.

BACKGROUND: Mutations in one or multiple genes can lead to hypodontia and its characteristic features. Numerous studies have shown a strong … .7 times more frequently in women with PTC. CONCLUSION: Our study suggests a possible link between odontogenesis and PTC. The absence of permanent teeth may increase the likelihood of PTC in women. Leveraging the age-7 orthopantomogram to identify women at high risk for PTC within a critical early detection window could significantly improve oral health outcom …

Sensory Nerves Regulate Odontoblast Differentiation via the SPP1/ITGA4 Axis During Tooth Root Development.

AIM: The stem/progenitor cell is crucial for organogenesis. Sensory nerves, as key components of the stem cell niche, secrete various factor … differentiation. Itga4 knockdown impaired odontoblastic differentiation and abolished SPP1-promoted odontogenesis. CONCLUSIONS: Collectively, our findings elucidate a novel mechanism whereby sensory nerves orchestrate tooth root development by regulating progenitor cell fate through the SPP1/ITGA4 axis. This neuro-mesenchymal crosstalk provides insights for st …

Epigenetic Regulation of Dental Follicle Stem Cells in Odontogenic Regeneration.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are short non-coding RNAs essential for biological functions that control the process of translation of mRNA into protein. The discovery of miRNAs in mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), especially in odontogenic tissues and dental follicles, has not been fully characterised. This study focused on characterising dental follicle stem cells (DFSCs) in terms of their ability to proliferate and differentiate into osteoblasts using qRT-PCR (miR-203, miR-125 and miR-21) and immunohistochemistry (OCT4 and CD133). Dental follicles are essential for tooth eruption as they envelop the ename

The ectopic mandibular canines can start tooth formation in three different locations: a case series study based on single orthopantomograms from 47 individuals.

INTRODUCTION: A former study on orthopantomograms from young children with abnormal dental development (not canine ectopia) demonstrated that the tooth bud of the mandibular canine, compared to a stable longitudinal canine axis, could be located normally, anteriorly or posteriorly, with close relation to the first premolar. AIM: The aim of the present study is to analyse on orthopantomograms if the canine axis can demonstrate where the ectopic mandibular canine started tooth formation. MATERIALS: The material consists of orthopantomograms with ectopic mandibular canines and presence of prima

Effects of inorganic phosphate on stem cells isolated from human exfoliated deciduous teeth.

Calcium phosphate-based materials (CaP) are introduced as potential dental pulp capping materials for deciduous teeth. The present study investigated the influence of inorganic phosphate (Pi) on regulating stem cells isolated from human exfoliated deciduous teeth (SHED). SHEDs were treated with Pi. Cell cycle progression and apoptosis were examined using flow cytometry analysis. Osteo/odontogenic and adipogenic differentiation were analyzed using alizarin red S and oil red O staining, respectively. The mRNA expression profile was investigated using a high-throughput RNA sequencing technique. P

The critical role of nuclear factor I-C in tooth development.

OBJECTIVES: Nuclear factor I-C (NFIC) plays a critical role in regulating epithelial-mesenchymal crosstalk during tooth development. However, it remains largely unknown about how NFIC functions in dentin and enamel formation. In the present review, we aim to summarize the most recent discoveries in the field and gain a better understanding of the roles NFIC performs during tooth formation. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Nfic-/- mice exhibit human dentin dysplasia type I (DDI)-like phenotypes signified by enlarged pulp chambers, the presence of short-root anomaly, and failure of odontoblast differentia

Dental development and craniofacial morphology in school-age children.

INTRODUCTION: The growth of the craniofacial complex is important for establishing a balanced relationship among the teeth, jaws, and other facial structures. However, there is still a lack of information about craniofacial parameters that are affected by the rate of dental development. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between dental development and craniofacial morphology in school-age children. METHODS: This study was embedded in the Generation R Study, Rotterdam, The Netherlands. In 3,896 children aged 8 to 11 years, dental development was assessed from panoramic ra

Dental development in hemifacial microsomia.

Hemifacial microsomia (HFM) is a congenital disorder marked by facial asymmetry. Whether facial asymmetry accounts for asymmetrical dental development is unknown. There are few data on dental development relative to mandibular development or severity of HFM, or on development over time. We hypothesized that when mandibular development was severely disturbed, local dental development was also affected. We compared dental development scores between affected and non-affected mandibular sides in patients with HFM (n = 84) and compared these data with those collected from Dutch control children (n

Dental development of Chinese children with cleft lip and palate.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the dental development and rate of tooth development between children with and without cleft lip and palate. PATIENTS: Age- and gender-matched pairs (231 in all) of southern Chinese children ages 3 to 12 years, with and without cleft lip and palate. METHODS: Dental histories and radiographs were studied. From these, dental development was determined. RESULTS: Of 2946 tooth pairs in the children with cleft lip and palate, 252 (8.6%) were found to be asymmetric, significantly (p < .001) more than the 63 of 3179 (2.0%) tooth pairs observed in the children without cleft li

Tooth development included in the multifocal jaw lesions of Langerhans cell histiocytosis.

Many cases demonstrating the oral manifestations of Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) have been reported; however, tooth development in jaw lesions has rarely been mentioned. This paper reports the case of a 3-year-old Japanese girl with LCH suffering from multiple osteolytic lesions of the skull and jaw bones. She was referred to our paediatric clinic because of swelling of the mucogingival folds in the upper and lower primary molar regions. The patient responded well to steroid therapy and the osteolytic lesions resolved. There was an accompanying development of permanent tooth germs inclu

Membranes, minerals, and proteins of developing vertebrate enamel.

Developing tooth enamel is formed as organized mineral in a specialized protein matrix. In order to analyze patterns of enamel mineralization and enamel protein expression in species representative of the main extant vertebrate lineages, we investigated developing teeth in a chondrichthyan, the horn shark, a teleost, the guppy, a urodele amphibian, the Mexican axolotl, an anuran amphibian, the leopard frog, two lepidosauria, a gecko and an iguana, and two mammals, a marsupial, the South American short-tailed gray opossum, and the house mouse. Electron microscopic analysis documented the presen

Longitudinal in vivo observations on odontogenic keratocyst over a period of 4 years.

A case is presented of simultaneous adjacent odontogenic keratocyst and dentigerous cyst occurring in the same quadrant. Their in vivo behaviour, influence and effect on each other, surrounding tissues and on tooth development over a period of 4 years are described. This unique case may further advance the understanding of the behaviour of the odontogenic keratocyst in vivo.

[Reproduction and differentiation of cells in the tissues of growing rat teeth in response to parathyroid hormone and hydrocortisone].

Influence of parathyroid hormone (PTH) and hydrocortisone (HC) on growth and development of teeth during prefunctional period has been studied, employing radioactive tracers. Biosynthetic and reproductive activity of cells is estimated in the molar and incisor tissues. It has been established that PTH accelerates the process of local resorption of the bone along the alveolar crest, but does not influence upon the teeth growth, functional and reproductive activity of the pulp cells. HC inhibits protein and glycoprotein synthesis, decreases amount of proliferating cells, accelerates their differ
