Adverse Events After Ankle Fracture Open Reduction Internal Fixation Among Patients With and Without Documented Cannabis and Tobacco Use.

BACKGROUND: Ankle fractures are common orthopaedic injuries that may be indicated for open reduction internal fixation (ORIF). Although the negative impact of tobacco use on perioperative outcomes of ankle fracture ORIF has been described, the potential impact of cannabis use on related outcomes is not as well established. METHODS: Retrospective database study of adult patients undergoing ankle ORIF for closed, isolated, ankle fractures from the 2010-2021 Q1 PearlDiver M151 data set. Subcohorts without and with cannabis and/or tobacco use were identified based on coding and matched based on p

Open Reduction and Internal Fixation of a Proximal Femoral Shaft Fracture in a Patient with Bilateral Congenital Hip Disease.

We present a rare case of a femoral shaft fracture in a 74-year-old woman with a preexisting untreated bilateral congenital hip dislocation and with concomitant leg length discrepancy. Because of the marked deformity of the upper femur, a derivative of the congenital hip disease, an open reduction and internal fixation was performed, with the use of an anatomic femur plate originally designed for the treatment of periprosthetic fractures. The patient was treated successfully and returned to her previous status of activity. The management of a femoral fracture in the presence of ipsilateral hip

Distal Forearm Fracture Open Reduction-Internal Fixation: Sonographic Detection of Hardware Malalignment and Associated Tendon Injuries Missed by Radiography.

Tendon injury is a known complication of distal radius fracture plate and screw fixation. Targeted musculoskeletal sonography is uniquely capable of assessing both tendon integrity and hardware abnormalities not recognized on radiographs. Each of the 3 patients described presented with pain after an open reduction-internal fixation following a distal forearm fracture. In each patient, radiographic findings, specifically the hardware position, were interpreted as normal. Important radiographically occult observations were subsequently made with sonography, including 3 proud screws and tendon in

Callus Formation and Mineralization after Fracture with Different Fixation Techniques: Minimally Invasive Plate Osteosynthesis versus Open Reduction Internal Fixation.

Minimally invasive plate osteosynthesis(MIPO) has been considered as an alternative for fracture treatment. Previous study has demonstrated that MIPO technique has the advantage of less soft tissue injury compared with open reduction internal fixation (ORIF). However, the comparison of callus formation and mineralization between two plate osteosynthesis methods remains unknown. In this experiment, ulna fracture model was established in 42 beagle dogs. The fractures underwent reduction and internal fixation with MIPO or ORIF. Sequential fluorescent labeling and radiographs were applied to deter

Clinical Follow-up on Sagittal Fracture at the Temporal Root of the Zygomatic Arch: Does It Need Open Reduction?

BACKGROUND: The zygoma is a major portion of the midfacial contour. When deformity occurs in this area, a reduction should be conducted to correct it. If a sagittal fracture at the temporal root of the zygomatic arch occurs, this also requires reduction, but it is difficult to approach due to its anatomical location, and the possibility of fixation is also limited. Thus, the authors attempted the reduction of sagittal fracture by two- or three-point fixation and the Gillies approach without direct manipulation. The preoperative and postoperative results of the patients were evaluated. Follow-u

Minimally invasive plate osteosynthesis (MIPO) with mini-open technique versus open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) in the treatment of displaced midclavicular fracture: a retrospective study.

INTRODUCTION: Minimally invasive plate osteosynthesis (MIPO) has been reported to be superior to open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) for the treatment of different long bone fractures. This retrospective study aimed to compare MIPO with the mini-open technique versus conventional ORIF for the treatment of displaced midshaft clavicular fractures. We hypothesized that this technique would improve supraclavicular nerve (SCN) injury-related numbness, decrease surgical incision, blood loss, thick scar, and overall patient satisfaction. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 45 cases of displ

Outcomes of AO/OTA 43C Pilon Fractures Treated With Open Reduction Internal Fixation or Tibiotalocalcaneal Nailing.

BACKGROUND: AO/OTA 43C pilon fractures are severe intra-articular distal tibia injuries associated with high complication rates. Although open reduction internal fixation (ORIF) remains the standard treatment, tibiotalocalcaneal (TTC) nailing has been used in select patients; this study compared characteristics and outcomes of patients treated with ORIF or TTC nailing. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was performed of adult patients (≥18 years) with AO/OTA 43C pilon fractures and ≥90 days of follow-up treated operatively at a single level 1 trauma center between 2020 and 2025. Patients t

The Influence of Peripheral Artery Disease on Postoperative Complications Following Open Reduction and Internal Fixation for Ankle Fractures.

BACKGROUND: Peripheral artery disease (PAD) has been associated with an increased risk of wound complications and surgical site infection following open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) for ankle fractures. However, longer-term outcomes, including fracture healing, remain poorly characterized. This study evaluates the association between PAD and short- and long-term postoperative complications following ankle ORIF. METHODS: The TriNetX Research Network was queried to identify patients who underwent isolated unimalleolar, bimalleolar, trimalleolar, or syndesmotic ORIF for ankle fractures

Treatment of superficial wound infection following open reduction and internal fixation of ankle fractures: A scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: Ankle fractures account for approximately 10% of fractures among adults and frequently require surgical intervention, with open reduction and internal fixation being the gold standard. This intervention is associated with a high complication rate. Superficial infections can easily progress due to limited soft-tissue coverage. It is therefore vital to treat early infection. This study has aimed to map the treatments of superficial infection, following open reduction and internal fixation of ankle fractures. METHODS: This scoping review was conducted in accordance with the Joanna

Open reduction and internal fixation compared to intramedullary nail fixation in distal fibula fractures: a meta-analysis.

The operative treatment of distal fibula fractures is debated. This study compared intramedullary nailing (IMN) versus open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) in patients with distal fibula fractures. The outcomes of interest were patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) and the rate of anatomic reduction, bony union, complication, and nerve injury. This study was conducted according to the 2020 PRISMA statement. In October 2024, the following databases were accessed: PubMed, Web of Science, Google Scholar, and Embase, with no time constraint. All the clinical studies comparing IMN versus

[Radiographic measurements and secondary displacement in patients with open reduction and volar plate fixation of distal radius fractures].

INTRODUCTION: distal radius fractures are an important cause of disability in adults. Fracture displacement and malunion are known and common complications of treatment. Open reduction and fracture fixation with volar plates and screws restore the normal alignment of the radius, but there are few reports in the literature regarding secondary displacement of the fracture fragments. OBJECTIVE: detect secondary displacement in patient receiving distal radius open reduction and internal fixation with volar plates in the last five years at a private third level hospital. MATERIAL AND METHODS: a t
