The reproducibility of computerized boundary analysis for measuring optic disc pallor in the normal optic disc.

The optic discs of eight normal subjects were photographed on three separate visits under widely varying conditions. Each photograph was scanned by a television camera, converted to digital form, and then analyzed using computer image analysis techniques. The computer was programmed to delineate the boundary around the optic disc and the area of pallor. The percentage of disc pallor was then computed across the entire disc and for each disc quadrant. The reproducibility of the procedure was determined by evaluating several photographic parameters: camera flash intensity, film type, magnificati

In the case of early-stage or advanced glaucoma, the major problem is no longer diagnostic, but evaluating its response to treatment. Other … ed: HRT II, GDx, OCT-3. Depending on the results (of intraocular pressure, the visual field and the optic disk), treatment can be modified and/or the assessment completed.

Drusen and the misleading optic disc.

Optic disc drusen are acellular calcified deposits occurring in small optic discs. They have a prevalence of up to approximately 2% and are bilateral in 75% of cases. Their size and fundosc pic visibility increase with age, and they are commonly responsible for the misdiagnosis of papilloedema by the unwary. Although largely asymptomatic, they can be associated with vascular problems affecting the optic nerve. Ocular ultrasonography is the most sensitive method for their detection. This article highlights their commonly encountered clinical presentations and the practical aspects of diagnosis

Optic neuritis in pediatric population: a review in current tendencies of diagnosis and management.

Optic neuritis is an inflammation of the optic nerve and may be related to different systemic conditions. The clinical presentation of this pathology usually includes sudden loss of visual acuity (VA) which may be unilateral or bilateral, visual field restriction, pain with eye movements, dyschromatopsia, a relative afferent pupillary defect and optic disk swelling. Optic neuritis in children has specific clinical features and a better prognosis than in adulthood. Although usually appears an underlying viral disease, the main concern for practitioners is the relationship of optic neuritis with…

[Decompression operations on the optic nerve in glaucoma].

The authors give theoretical grounds and experimental validation for surgery on the optic nerve to eliminate its atrophic changes in glaucoma. They suggest a technique of the direct intervention at the site of the optic disk, approaching it from the side of the eye cavity. A method for the optic nerve decompression at the site of its stem portion via an extraocular approach is suggested. Experimental studies have demonstrated the possibility of enlarging the volume of the optic nerve scleral canal by discission of its narrowest section, the scleral ring; this operation essentially decreases tw…

SD-OCT-histopathologic correlation in Schnabel's cavernous optic nerve atrophy.

BACKGROUND: Until now, Schnabel's cavernous optic nerve atrophy (SCONA) has solely been a histopathological diagnosis exhibiting variable degrees of optic nerve (ON) atrophy with characteristic cavernous spaces filled with acid mucopolysaccharides. We report the first correlation of histopathologic findings with spectral domain-optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) imaging in SCONA. METHODS: We examined the eye of an index patient with histopathologically identified SCONA who had undergone multimodal imaging before enucleation for iris ring melanoma. The extent of SCONA in the index patient a

[Effect of acupuncture on retinal and choroidal thickness in patients with optic atrophy].

OBJECTIVE: To observe the effect of acupuncture on visual acuity, intraocular pressure, visual field, retinal and choroidal thickness on optic disc and macular area in patients with optic atrophy. METHODS: A total of 33 patients with optic atrophy were treated with acupuncture. Acupuncture was given at Chengqi (ST 1), Shangjingming (Extra), Qiuhou (EX-HN 7) and Fengchi (GB 20) etc., 30 min each time, once a day, for 14 days. The visual acuity, intraocular pressure, visual field indexes (mean deviation [MD], pattern standard deviation [PSD] and visual field index [VFI]), optic disc retinal ner

Nonglaucomatous excavation of the optic disc.

In order to test the hypothesis that glaucomatous and nonglaucomatous optic disc cupping can be distinguished ophthalmoscopically, three ophthalmologists experienced in assessing optic dics were asked to view fundus stereophotographs as "unknowns". Of 29 eyes with nonglaucomatous optic atrophy, 13 (44%) were misdiagnosed as showing glaucoma by at least one observer. Of four optic disc features specifically analyzed, neuroretinal rim pallor proved to be 94% specific for nonglaucomatous atrophy, while focal or diffuse obliteration of the neuroretinal rim was 87% specific for glaucoma. These two

Congenital Optic Disc Anomalies-A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words!

Congenital optic disc anomalies are uncommon causes of vision loss that may be recognized shortly after birth but may also be identified in later childhood and sometimes well until adulthood. They may be unilateral or bilateral and isolated or associated with other systemic findings. In some conditions the origin of the developmental abnormality is understood as in the case of optic disc colobomas resulting from failure of closure of the embryonic fissure whereas in others the cause is hypothetical. Recognition of these anomalies is usually by direct observation though ancillary testing may ai

Multispectral retinal video-ophthalmoscope with fiber optic illumination.

Multispectral imaging is used in various applications including astronomy, industry and agriculture. In retinal imaging, the single-shot multispectral image stack is typically acquired and analyzed. This multispectral analysis can provide information on various structural or metabolic properties. This paper describes the multispectral improvement of a video-ophthalmoscope, which can acquire retinal video sequences of the optic nerve head and peripapillary area using various spectral light illumination. The description of the multispectral video imaging is provided and several applications are

Iridochorioretinal coloboma associated with buried optic nerve drusen: a case report.

Improper closure of the embryonic fissure results in ocular coloboma. Optic nerve head drusen are hyaline deposits located anterior to the lamina cribosa that grow and calcify over time. It is rarely associated with ocular coloboma, with only two cases reported. We present a patient with an irido-chorioretinal coloboma, poorly defined optic nerve limits in the right eye, and increased papillary vascular ramification and peripapillary atrophy in the left eye, without any visible drusen. Fundus autofluorescence, high-resolution optical coherence tomography, and B-scan ultrasonography confirmed t

[Maculopathy with optic nerve pits : Morphological criteria in SD-OCT].

PURPOSE: Optic pit is a congenital anomaly with malformation similar to coloboma of the optic disc. The cause of optic pit maculopathy is controversial. We used high resolution OCT to investigate changes in the vitreoretinal and vitreopapillary transition within optic pit eyes. METHODS: The vitreoretinal and vitreo-papillary transition of 12 eyes was accurately analyzed using SD-OCT. We registered the following criteria: liquefaction of prepapillary vitreous, papillary vitreous traction, discontinuity within the hyaloid cortex and communication spaces between pit and retinal edema. RESULTS:
