The future application of artificial intelligence and telemedicine in the retina: A perspective.

The development of artificial intelligence (AI) and deep learning provided precise image recognition and classification in the medical field. Ophthalmology is an exceptional department to translate AI applications since noninvasive imaging is routinely used for the diagnosis and monitoring. In recent years, AI-based image interpretation of optical coherence tomography and fundus photograph in retinal diseases has been extended to diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, and retinopathy of prematurity. The rapid development of portable ocular monitoring devices coupled with AI-in

Bioinspired core-shell photonic crystal microneedle patch for real-time optical monitoring of drug release in jellyfish envenomation therapy.

The increasing incidence of jellyfish stings from expanding global marine activities necessitates painless therapeutic strategies with real-time treatment assessment capabilities. Here, we present a bioinspired core-shell photonic crystal microneedle (PCMN) patch that addresses this need through dual functionality of both therapeutic delivery and optically transduced monitoring. This device is fabricated by coating hyaluronic acid (HA) shells onto non-close-packed PCMN cores, which are functionalized with chlorpheniramine, while the HA shells incorporate lidocaine as a pain management payload.

Multi-directional millinewton force sensing for human-computer interaction based on an optoelectronic-integrated flexible tactile device.

Flexible optical force sensors have shown great potential in human-computer interaction (HCI), health monitoring, and wearable devices. However, conventional optical force-sensing systems typically require separate light sources and photodetectors, leading to bulky system architectures and low integration. This work presents a multi-directional millinewton sensor based on a GaN monolithically integrated optoelectronic chip and a flexible optoelectronic tactile device (FOTD). The chip integrates one micro-scale multi-quantum-well (MQW) transmitter and four-quadrant MQW receivers on the same sub

Miniature line-scanned dual-axis confocal microscope for versatile clinical use.

A miniature optical-sectioning fluorescence microscope with high sensitivity and resolution would enable non-invasive and real-time tissue inspection, with potential use cases including early disease detection and intraoperative guidance. Previously, we developed a miniature MEMS-based dual-axis confocal (DAC) microscope that enabled video-rate optically sectioned in vivo microscopy of human tissues. However, the device's clinical utility was limited due to a small field of view, a non-adjustable working distance, and a lack of a sterilization strategy. In our latest design, we have made impro

Broadband, freeform focusing micro-optics for a side-viewing imaging catheter.

Successful implementation of a catheter-based imaging system relies on the integration of high-performance miniaturized distal end optics. Typically, compensation of chromatic dispersion, as well as astigmatism introduced by the device's sheath, can be addressed only by combining multiple optical elements, adversely impacting size and manufacturability. Here, we present a 300×300×800  μm3 monolithic optic that provides high optical performances over an extended wavelength range (near UV-visible-IR) with minimal chromatic aberrations. The design of the optic, fully optimized using standard opti

Double-Sided Pressure-Sensitive Adhesive Materials under Human-Centric Extreme Environments.

Maintaining the adhesion strength of flexible pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSAs) is crucial for advanced applications, such as health monitoring. Sustainable mounting is critical for wearable sensor devices, especially under challenging surroundings such as low and high temperatures (e.g., polar regions or deserts), underwater and sweat environments (physical activity), and cyclical shear complex stresses. In this article, we consider the adhesive, mechanical, and optical properties of medical-grade double-sided PSAs by simulating extreme human-centric environments. Diverse temperature condit

Volumetric microscopy of cerebral arteries with a miniaturized optical coherence tomography imaging probe.

Endovascular interventions are increasingly becoming the preferred approach for treating strokes and cerebral artery diseases. These procedures rely on sophisticated angiographical imaging guidance, which encounters challenges because of limited contrast and spatial resolution. Achieving a more precise visualization of the underlying arterial pathology and neurovascular implants is crucial for accurate procedural decision-making. In a human study involving 32 patients, we introduced the clinical application of a miniaturized endovascular neuro optical coherence tomography (nOCT) imaging probe.

Nanopatterned sapphire substrates in deep-UV LEDs: is there an optical benefit?

Light emitting diodes (LEDs) in the deep ultra-violet (DUV) offer new perspectives for multiple applications ranging from 3D printing to sterilization. However, insufficient light extraction severely limits their efficiency. Nanostructured sapphire substrates in aluminum nitride based LED devices have recently shown to improve crystal growth properties, while their impact on light extraction has not been fully verified. We present a model for understanding the impact of nanostructures on the light extraction capability of DUV-LEDs. The model assumes an isotropic light source in the semiconduct

A Printable and Conductive Yield-Stress Fluid as an Ultrastretchable Transparent Conductor.

In contrast to ionically conductive liquids and gels, a new type of yield-stress fluid featuring reversible transitions between solid and liquid states is introduced in this study as a printable, ultrastretchable, and transparent conductor. The fluid is formulated by dispersing silica nanoparticles into the concentrated aqueous electrolyte. The as-printed features show solid-state appearances to allow facile encapsulation with elastomers. The transition into liquid-like behavior upon tensile deformations is the enabler for ultrahigh stretchability up to the fracture strain of the elastomer. Su

Loss-engineered reconfigurable polaritons.

Phonon polaritons, with their strong field confinement, enable extreme miniaturization of photonic devices. While optical loss is conventionally perceived as a fundamental limit to be compensated, here we demonstrate a novel scheme by harnessing leakage-induced loss as a degree of freedom for mode manipulation. By coupling 2D hyperbolic polaritons (e.g., α-MoO3) with 3D bulk leaky channels (e.g., β-Ga2O3), we achieve a topological reconstruction into quasi-one-dimensional (quasi-1D) polaritons over a broad frequency range. In the frequency domain, out-of-plane phonon-driven leakage in the subs

SeCaT-meter 600: Prism-based dual channel optical density meter with self-calibration.

Accurate and real-time monitoring of optical density (OD) is one of the key requirements for control of microbial fermentations. It provides insight into current cell concentration and growth dynamics of microbial cell cultures by measuring optical density at 600 nm (OD600). In combination with additional chemical (e.g. pH, dissolved oxygen), and physical (e.g. temperature) parameters, adjustments of culture conditions can be made during cultivation. Optical density is determined through either in-line, on-line or off-line measurements, although on a laboratory scale manual sampling (off-line)

Strain-tunable electronic and optical properties of a Janus PtSSe-SnSSe van der Waals heterostructure.

Janus van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures are of great interest due to their intrinsic asymmetry, built-in electric fields, and tunable physical properties, making them attractive for advanced nanoelectronic and optoelectronic applications. In this article, the effect of strain on Janus PtSSe-SnSSe vdW heterostructure is studied using first-principles density functional theory calculations. The electronic band structure and optical absorption characteristics were first analyzed in the unstrained configuration. Subsequently, biaxial strain was applied to examine its influence on the band struc

Breaking Performance Barriers in KBe2BO3F2 (KBBF) Analogs by Functional Group Self-Polymerization.

Enhancing the conversion efficiency of all-solid-state lasers through the rational design of crystal materials with superior linear and nonlinear optical (NLO) properties remains a formidable challenge. Herein, we present a novel approach to optimizing these properties in KBe2BO3F2 (KBBF)-analog crystals via functional group self-polymerization. This strategy led to the synthesis of two new optical crystals: noncentrosymmetric CsAs2O3Br and centrosymmetric CsAs4O6Br. By incorporating highly optically active [AsO3]3- units into the classical 2D [Be2BO3F]∞ - framework, we facilitated the self-as

Unconventional Magnetism, Sliding Ferroelectricity, and Magneto-Optical Kerr Effect in Multiferroic Bilayers.

Antiferromagnetic (AFM) materials provide a platform to couple altermagnetic (AM) spin-splitting with the magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE), offering potential for next-generation quantum technologies. In this work, first-principles calculations, symmetry analysis, and k·p modeling are employed to show that interlayer sliding in AFM multiferroic bilayers enables control of electronic, magnetic, and magneto-optical properties. This study reveals an intriguing dimension-driven AM crossover: the 2D paraelectric (PE) bilayer exhibits spin-degenerate bands protected by the [C2∥Mc] spin-space symme

Clinical Application of Adaptive Optics Imaging in Diagnosis, Management, and Monitoring of Ophthalmological Diseases: A Narrative Review.

Visualization of the retinal structure is crucial for understanding the pathophysiology of ophthalmic diseases, as well as for monitoring their course and treatment effects. Until recently, evaluation of the retina at the cellular level was only possible using histological methods, because the available retinal imaging technology had insufficient resolution due to aberrations caused by the optics of the eye. Adaptive optics (AO) technology improved the resolution of optical systems to 2 µm by correcting optical wave-front aberrations, thereby revolutionizing methods for studying eye structures

Optical technologies for the detection of viruses like COVID-19: Progress and prospects.

The outbreak of life-threatening pandemic like COVID-19 necessitated the development of novel, rapid and cost-effective techniques that facilitate detection of viruses like SARS-CoV-2. The presently popular approach of a collection of samples using the nasopharyngeal swab method and subsequent detection of RNA using the real-time polymerase chain reaction suffers from false-positive results and a longer diagnostic time scale. Alternatively, various optical techniques namely optical sensing, spectroscopy, and imaging shows a great promise in virus detection. Herein, a comprehensive review of th

Electronic and optical properties of lead-free hybrid double perovskites for photovoltaic and optoelectronic applications.

Developing of lead-free double perovskites have drawn significant interest for photovoltaics and optoelectronics as the materials have the potential to avoid toxicity and instability issues associated with lead-based organometallic perovskites. In this study, we report the optoelectronic properties of a new group of non-toxic lead-free organic-inorganic halide double perovskites composed of caesium (Cs), methylammonium (MA) or formamidinium (FA) with bismuth (Bi) and metal copper (Cu). We perform density functional theory investigations to calculate the structural, electronic and optical prope

Self-aligned optical microcomb emerging between octave-separated lasers.

Optical frequency combs (OFCs) are frequency rulers essential for precision metrology, next-generation navigation and testing of fundamental physics1. Despite intense efforts, chip-integrated OFCs remain laboratory-bound, unable to fulfil their promise of compact and cost-effective deployment. Although improvements in fabrication and integration are important, a conceptual limitation has stymied progress: on-chip OFC architectures have aimed to miniaturize their table-top counterparts and relied on cascading outward from a single pump2,3. In integrated platforms, this approach does not readily
