PURPOSE: Spina bifida (SB) is a congenital disorder caused by the incomplete fusion of the embryonic neural tube during spinal cord development. In this study, we used Spectral Domain Optic Coherence Tomography (SD-OCT) for retinal nerve fibre layer (RNFL) and ganglion cell complex (GCC) analyses and compared the results of healthy children and SB patients in a similar age group.
METHODS: Our study was planned prospectively and conducted between June 2017 and July 2019. One hundred eyes of 50 participants, consisting of 28 SB patients and 22 healthy children were included. In all cases, RNFL

The trigeminal ganglion (TG) is the primary site of aberration in trigeminal neuralgia (TN), and hence a crucial site where afferent input can be modulated. Here, we postulated that inhibiting TG via optogenetics using flexible optic cannula would diminish brainstem trigeminal nucleus caudalis (TNC) neuronal activity and pain behavior in TN rat model. Infraorbital nerve constriction was employed to induce TN in female Sprague-Dawley rats, while naive and sham rats served as controls. TG-directed microinjections of AAV virus containing either the optogenetic or null vector were delivered to rat

Sorbitol is known as a biomarker for the evaluation of the progress of diabetic complications. We have developed a sorbitol biosensor using an optical fiber for rapid diagnosis and pathological evaluation of diabetic complications. In this paper, we measured blood sorbitol in diabetic rats using an improved biosensor, and discussed the effectiveness of the developed biosensor and the significance of sorbitol measurement. In order to investigate the effectiveness of the developed biosensor, the blood sorbitol level of type II diabetic rats prepared by streptozotocin administration was measured

Making use of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for diagnostics on patients with implanted medical devices requires caution due to mutual interactions between the device and the electromagnetic fields used by the scanner that can cause a number of adverse events. The presented study offers a novel test method to quantify the risk of unintended output of acoustically stimulating hearing implants. The design and operating principle of an all-optical, MRI safe vibrometer is outlined, followed by an experimental verification of a prototype. Results obtained in an MRI environment indicate that the s

BACKGROUND: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic inflammatory demyelinating autoimmune disease of the central nervous system (CNS) with axonal degeneration as major determinant of neurological disability. Assessment of unmyelinated retinal nerve fibers using optical coherence tomography (OCT) may be useful for diagnosing the onset and rate of progression of neurodegeneration.
OBJECTIVE: To assess the incidence and severity of damage of the peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) in two different MS subtypes: non-progressive [Prog(-)MS] and progressive [Prog(+)MS].
METHODS: 48 patients

PURPOSE: To evaluate LithoVue, the new single-use digital flexible ureteroscope, in a human cadaveric model and compare it with a nondisposable fiber optic and digital flexible ureteroscopes.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: LithoVue, a conventional fiber optic, and digital flexible ureteroscopes were each tested in four renal units of recently deceased female cadavers by three surgeons. The following parameters were analyzed: accessibility to the kidney and navigation of the entire collecting system with and without ureteral access sheath (UAS), lower pole access measuring the deflection of the ureter

This work presents the development of high sensitive, selective, fast and reusable C-reactive protein (CRP) aptasensors. This novel approach takes advantage of the utilization of high sensitive refractometers based on Lossy Mode Resonances generated by thin indium tin oxide (ITO) films fabricated onto the planar region of d-shaped optical fibers. CRP selectivity is obtained by means of the adhesion of a CRP specific aptamer chain onto the ITO film using the Layer-by-Layer (LbL) nano-assembly fabrication process. The sensing mechanism relies on resonance wavelength shifts originated by refracti…

PURPOSE: To investigate the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness concordance when measured by spectral domain (SD) and swept source (SS) optical coherence tomography (OCT), and to compare glaucoma-discriminating capability.
METHODS: RNFL thicknesses were measured with the scan circle, centered on the optic nerve head, in 55 healthy, 41 glaucoma suspected, and 87 glaucomatous eyes. The RNFL thickness measured by the SD-OCT (sdRNFL thickness) and SS-OCT (ssRNFL thickness) were compared using the t-test. Bland-Altman analysis was performed to examine their agreement. We compared areas unde

PURPOSE: To characterize the error of optical coherence tomography (OCT) measurements of retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness when using automated retinal layer segmentation algorithms without manual refinement.
DESIGN: Cross-sectional study.
METHODS: This study was set in a glaucoma clinical practice, and the dataset included 3490 scans from 412 eyes of 213 individuals with a diagnosis of glaucoma or glaucoma suspect. We used spectral domain OCT (Spectralis) to measure RNFL thickness in a 6-degree peripapillary circle, and exported the native "automated segmentation only" results. In

INTRODUCTION: Quantitative assessment of macular and nerve fibre layer thickness in multiple sclerosis patients with regard to expanded disability status scale (EDSS) and presence or absence of previous optic neuritis episodes.
METHODS: We recruited 62 patients with multiple sclerosis (53 relapsing-remitting and 9 secondary progressive) and 12 disease-free controls. All patients underwent an ophthalmological examination, including quantitative analysis of the nerve fibre layer and macular thickness using optical coherence tomography. Patients were classified according to EDSS as A (lower than

PURPOSE: To evaluate the performance of Cirrus spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT)-guided progression analysis (GPA) software to detect progression of retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thinning in glaucoma patients.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included 272 eyes of 154 glaucoma patients. Median follow-up time was 2.2 years, during which time data from at least four good-quality OCT examinations were collected. Glaucomatous eyes were classified as either early or advanced group according to visual field (VF) severity. Reference standard of glaucoma pr

There continues to be a significant clinical need for rapid and reliable intraoperative margin assessment during cancer surgery. Here we describe a portable, quantitative, optical fiber probe-based, spectroscopic tissue scanner designed for intraoperative diagnostic imaging of surgical margins, which we tested in a proof of concept study in human tissue for breast cancer diagnosis. The tissue scanner combines both diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) and intrinsic fluorescence spectroscopy (IFS), and has hyperspectral imaging capability, acquiring full DRS and IFS spectra for each scanned im

Forty-eight patients aged 25-45 years with American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) classes I and II undergoing elective faciomaxillary surgery were allocated to two groups of fiberscopic nasal intubation using either the NASAL-18 technique or th
