Bacterial Swimming and Accumulation on Endothelial Cell Surfaces.

Flagellar-driven locomotion plays a critical role in the bacterial attachment and colonization of surfaces, contributing to the risks of contamination and infection. Extensive efforts to uncover the underlying principles governing bacterial motility near surfaces have relied on idealized assumptions about surrounding artificial surfaces. However, in the context of living systems, the role of cells from tissues and organs becomes increasingly critical, particularly in bacterial swimming and adhesion, yet it remains poorly understood. Here, we propose using biological surfaces composed of vascul

Responses in area hMT+ reflect tuning for both auditory frequency and motion after blindness early in life.

Previous studies report that human middle temporal complex (hMT+) is sensitive to auditory motion in early-blind individuals. Here, we show that hMT+ also develops selectivity for auditory frequency after early blindness, and that this selectivity is maintained after sight recovery in adulthood. Frequency selectivity was assessed using both moving band-pass and stationary pure-tone stimuli. As expected, within primary auditory cortex, both moving and stationary stimuli successfully elicited frequency-selective responses, organized in a tonotopic map, for all subjects. In early-blind and sight-

Functional Swallowing Units (FSUs) as organs-at-risk for radiotherapy. PART 2: Advanced delineation guidelines for FSUs.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: In a separate article (PART 1), a rationale and explanation of the physiology-and-anatomy-based concept of Functional Swallowing Units (FSUs) was presented. FSUs are swallowing muscles not included in the set of commonly defined swallowing organs at risk (SWOARs). They are involved in three crucial swallowing components: hyolaryngeal elevation (HLE), tongue base retraction (TBR) and tongue motion. This paper is a continuation of PART 1 and it provides detailed computed tomography (CT)-based delineation guidelines for FSUs, which presumably are also at risk of radiation-

Pyrrolidinium-Based Cyanides: Unusual Architecture and Dielectric Switchability Triggered by Order-Disorder Process.

Two three-dimensional metal-organic compounds of the formula Pyr2KM(CN)6, where M = Co, Fe and Pyr = pyrrolidinium ((CH2)4NH2+), have been found to crystallize at room temperature in a monoclinic structure, space group P21/c. They are cyano-bridged compounds with an unprecedented type of architecture containing pyrrolidinium cations in the voids. The materials have been investigated by X-ray diffraction, dielectric, and spectroscopic methods as a function of temperature in order to determine their properties and the mechanism of the reversible phase transitions occurring at ca. 345-370 K. Mutations in CCDC11, which encodes a coiled-coil containing ciliary protein, causes situs inversus due to dysmotility of monocilia in the left-right organizer.

In vertebrates, establishment of left-right (LR) asymmetry is dependent on cilia-driven fluid flow within the LR organizer. Mutations in CCDC11 disrupt LR asymmetry in humans, but how the gene functions in LR patterning is presently unknown. We describe a patient with situs inversus totalis carrying homozygous loss-of-function mutations in CCDC11. We show that CCDC11 is an axonemal protein in respiratory cilia, but is largely dispensable for their structure and motility. To investigate the role of CCDC11 in LR development, we studied the zebrafish homolog of the gene. Like in human respiratory

Localized movement and morphology of UBF1-positive nucleolar regions are changed by γ-irradiation in G2 phase of the cell cycle.

The nucleolus is a well-organized site of ribosomal gene transcription. Moreover, many DNA repair pathway proteins, including ATM, ATR kinases, MRE11, PARP1 and Ku70/80, localize to the nucleolus (Moore et al., 2011 ). We analyzed the consequences of DNA damage in nucleoli following ultraviolet A (UVA), C (UVC), or γ-irradiation in order to test whether and how radiation-mediated genome injury affects local motion and morphology of nucleoli. Because exposure to radiation sources can induce changes in the pattern of UBF1-positive nucleolar regions, we visualized nucleoli in living cells by GFP-

The anatomy of the ligaments of the wrist and distal radioulnar joints.

The ligaments of the wrist are responsible for guiding and constraining the complex motion of the carpal bones relative to the forearm bones, the metacarpals, and contiguous carpal bones. The majority of wrist ligaments are found within the joint capsule as organized thickenings composed of parallel collagen fascicles, small caliber nerves and blood vessels, and lined on their deep surfaces by synoviocytes. The palmar radiocarpal ligament complex is composed of the radioscaphocapitate, long radiolunate, radioscapholunate and short radiolunate ligaments. The ulnocarpal ligaments include the uln

Proton lattice radiotherapy for large lung tumors: effects of robust optimization and tumor motion.

Purpose. The Bragg peak of proton beam enables precise dose delivery and superior dose modulation in proton lattice radiotherapy (LRT), yet it remains susceptible to uncertainties. However, detailed studies on the application of robust optimization in proton LRT are still limited. This study aims to investigate the impact of robust parameter settings and respiratory motion on intensity-modulated proton therapy (IMPT)-based LRT plans for bulky lung tumors.Methods.Eight patients with bulky lung tumors were retrospectively analyzed. Each patient underwent free-breathing 4D CT simulation and recons

SynMSE: A multimodal similarity evaluator for complex distribution discrepancy in unsupervised deformable multimodal medical image registration.

Unsupervised deformable multimodal medical image registration often confronts complex scenarios, which include intermodality domain gaps, multi-organ anatomical heterogeneity, and physiological motion variability. These factors introduce substantial grayscale distribution discrepancies, hindering precise alignment between different imaging modalities. However, existing methods have not been sufficiently adapted to meet the specific demands of registration in such complex scenarios. To overcome the above challenges, we propose SynMSE, a novel multimodal similarity evaluator that can be seamless

Trauma-Induced Unilateral Progression of Sclerosis in a Patient With Limited Cutaneous Systemic Sclerosis.

Systemic sclerosis is an autoimmune connective tissue disease, which is characterized by immune dysregulation and progressive sclerosis of the skin with variable internal organ involvement. Exogenous triggers such as physical trauma are documented as a potential precipitating factor for systemic sclerosis; however, the condition typically presents with bilateral skin changes. Unilateral progression of systemic sclerosis is an extremely rare phenomenon, and the role injury and/or immobilization plays in provoking this presentation requires further elucidation. A 63-year-old female with an 11-ye

Mediastinal paraganglioma successfully resected by robot-assisted thoracoscopic surgery with en bloc chest wall resection: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Robot-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (RATS) is useful for surgery in the apical region of the chest cavity, as it narrows towards the head. Here, we describe a nonfunctional, rib-invasive paraganglioma arising in the posterior mediastinum that was successfully removed using RATS combined with chest wall resection. CASE PRESENTATION: A 31-year-old woman presented with a posterior mediastinal mass on chest computed tomography (CT) scan during a medical check-up 2 years prior. Positron emission tomography/computed tomography scan with F-18 fluorodeoxyglucose revealed a mass associate

National competition reveals common errors in target delineation among young clinicians in radiation therapy.

BACKGROUND: Radiation therapy's efficacy hinges on accurate tumor and organ delineation, a task currently dependent on manual methods prone to high variability and error. To address this, we organized a national targeting competition to identify and rectify common targeting errors among young clinicians. METHODS: An annual national competition in China was conducted for clinicians under 40, focusing on various cancer types. Participants submitted delineation work for anonymous expert review. The competition assessed integration of multimodal imaging and accuracy in delineation across differen

Reversible Cardiomyopathy in Polyarteritis Nodosa: A Case Report.

Polyarteritis nodosa (PAN) is a rare vasculitis that affects the medium-sized arteries, often involving numerous organ systems, including the heart. In this report, we present a case of a 26-year-old male with a two-month history of systemic symptoms, abdominal pain, and intrinsic acute kidney injury, who ultimately developed acute hypoxic respiratory failure secondary to acute pulmonary edema. His echocardiogram was notable for biventricular systolic dysfunction with reduced ejection fraction and regional wall motion abnormalities, but no coronary angiogram was pursued. His cardiac magnetic r

Combined treatment with basalt stone and placenta extract to improve the chronic pain and scar after breast cancer surgery: a case report.

BACKGROUND: The changes in body image caused by breast deformities and postoperative pain have a detrimental influence on the physical and mental health of patients with breast cancer. The postoperative quality of life (QOL) of these patients reduces significantly owing to the changes in the breast, an organ unique to women, that occur following breast cancer surgery. CASE PRESENTATION: This case report presents the case of a Asian woman in her early 40 s with postoperative hypertrophic scarring and contraction of the scar following mastectomy; the patient presented with decreased range of mo

Acquired contractile ability in human endometrial stromal cells by passive loading of cyclic tensile stretch.

The uterus plays an important and unique role during pregnancy and is a dynamic organ subjected to mechanical stimuli. It has been reported that infertility occurs when the peristalsis is prevented, although its mechanisms remain unknown. In this study, we found that mechanical strain mimicking the peristaltic motion of the uterine smooth muscle layer enabled the endometrial stromal cells to acquire contractility. In order to mimic the peristalsis induced by uterine smooth muscle cells, cyclic tensile stretch was applied to human endometrial stromal cells. The results showed that the strained

Surgical robotic arm control for tissue ablation.

In the technology driven era, robot assisted surgery is gradually emerging as a revolutionized surgical procedure over traditional laparoscopic method. Despite the concerns about robotic surgery for minimally invasive surgical procedures, robotized surgical arms have been used in many hospitals. Certain surgical procedures require removal of a segment of an organ or body part like excision biopsy, linear thin layer of soft tissue, triangular mass, and tangential excision in burn management, where shaving-off at an angle of the tissue layer to be removed. For such minimally invasive procedures,

Acromioclavicular septic arthritis: a case report of a novel pathogen.

In immunocompetent patients, septic arthritis of the acromioclavicular (AC) joint is a rare entity. It can be difficult to discern from glenohumeral septic arthritis and AC joint impingement syndrome. The usual symptoms are fever, erythema, swelling, palpable pain over the AC joint, and pain with shoulder motion. The most commonly reported causative organism is a Staphylococcus or Streptococcus species. Haemophilus parainfluenzae is a rare cause of septic arthritis in any joint. Although limited to case reports in the literature, most H parainfluenzae skeletal infections occur after surgical i

A brief history of trying: man, NASA, and medicine.

The development of the V2 rocket during World War II raised the possibility of manned spaceflight to the level of "serious consideration." Concepts of aviation medicine led to the specialty of space medicine. Projects Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, Skylab, and Apollo-Soyuz, and the Space Transportation System have helped us gain important biomedical information, including but not limited to, microgravity and its effects on red cell mass, orthostatic tolerance, exercise capacity, bone density, and muscle nitrogen levels. Problems of "space motion sickness" and micro-organisms in space have become maj

Physical rehabilitation after myocutaneous flaps.

The neck, shoulder, and upper trunk serve as donor sites for commonly used flaps in head and neck reconstruction. In order to prevent permanent functional disabilities, a physical therapy program was organized. The anatomy, physiology, and kinesiology of the shoulder muscles that are commonly used in myocutaneous flaps are reviewed. Their functional deficit and compensation are described. Exercise protocols for each group of muscles were developed. Prevention of postoperative "frozen shoulder" and the avoidance of tension and torsion of the transposed muscle pedicle are important during the im

Motion matters: visual perception and motor functioning in children and youths with spastic cerebral palsy.

BACKGROUND: Vision plays a crucial role in guiding and anticipating movements. In individuals with cerebral palsy (CP), a condition characterized by disorders of movement and posture attributed to disturbances of the developing brain, Cerebral Visual Impairments (CVI) are common. CVI involves difficulties with organizing and interpreting visual information. Gait alterations and activity limitations in children with CP such as reduced; walking speed, step length, and motor skill performance, may be over-attributed to the motor and musculoskeletal disorders.
