AIM: Oral environment of the mouth is a suitable place for biodegradation of alloys used in orthodontic wires. The toxicity of these alloys namely nickel and chromium has concerned the researchers about the release of these ions from orthodontic wires and brackets. The aim of this study was to measure the levels of nickel and chromium ions released from 0.018" stainless steel (SS) and NiTi wires after immersion in three solutions.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: One hundred and forty-four round NiTi and 144 round SS archwires with the diameters of 0.018" were immersed in Oral B®, Orthokin® and artific

Hyperdontia or supernumerary teeth are the erupted or impacted teeth, which develop in addition to the regular dental series and might cause many occlusal problems. This article sheds light on a case of impacted maxillary left central incisor (21) due to a mesiodens supernumerary tooth and a late development of another supernumerary tooth in the upper left premolar area at the end of orthodontic treatment. O.A. is an 11-year, eight-month-old male, African patient presented to the orthodontic clinic with a chief complaint "My upper front tooth did not erupt although the dentist attached a wire

Segmental Le Fort I osteotomy, a complex procedure with many mobile parts, has traditionally required presurgical orthodontics with conventional braces, composed of metal brackets, bands, and archwires. These appliances are not always accepted by patients, particularly older teenagers and professional adults who previously endured traditional orthodontia during adolescence, and now require retreatment because of jaw growth differences necessitating orthognathic surgery. Less obtrusive orthodontic therapies, involving clear aligners (e.g., Invisalign), are becoming increasingly popular, as they

Solitary median maxillary central incisor (SMMCI) syndrome is a rare developmental disorder characterized by a single symmetrical maxillary central incisor. Only a small number of cases with comprehensive dental treatment have been reported in the literature. No surgical treatment has been proposed before. We report the case of an 8-year-old girl who presented SMMCI syndrome associated with an Angle class II occlusion and a maxillary transverse deficiency. After the failure of two rapid maxillary expansions, a surgical option was proposed: osteogenic maxillary distraction. The distraction, ass

Displacement injuries of permanent teeth are an increasing emergency in the dental office. Children and adolescents are particularly prone to dental trauma due to participation in risky activities. Repositioning or replantation with subsequent stabilization by a dental splint is the standard of care for most displaced or avulsed permanent teeth. Non-rigid fixation allowing physiologic tooth mobility has been shown to be desirable for periodontal healing. A flexible splint of short duration appears to reduce the risk of dentoalveolar ankylosis or external replacement resorption. Different splin

Lingual forced eruption is a treatment modality that minimizes esthetic impairment during orthodontic treatment. Use of this technique can enhance the acceptance of orthodontic treatment by adult patients and minimize unnecessary compromises in the treatment planning of submerged roots. In this clinical report, a treatment modality for forced eruption therapy is described, clinical considerations for patient selection are identified, and the advantages and limits of the lingual orthodontic technique are discussed.

The purpose of orthodontic treatment is to move teeth as efficiently as possible with least damage to teeth and their supporting tissues. Root resorption may occur as an unwanted side effect and may in some instances jeopardize an otherwise successful treatment. The general aim of this series of clinical investigations was to study the association between applied force, achieved tooth movement and related root resorptions. In 144 adolescents, the maxillary first or second premolar was buccally moved with a fixed orthodontic appliance. The variables studied were duration, magnitude and type of

This clinical report describes a straightforward alternative treatment for adult patients with extruded maxillary molars, who are reluctant to use fixed appliances and complex mechanics. The maxillary molar supereruption of a 57-year-old woman was treated using buttons bonded to the buccal and palatal surfaces of the molars, 2 mini-implants, and elastomeric chains. The intrusion was achieved in 5 months. The treatment stability was observed for 5 years after treatment.

Arch forms in orthodontics are considered to affect occlusal stability. This study's subjects were 47 patients (Class III S group) who visited the Chiba Dental Center of Tokyo Dental College and were surgical orthodontic cases, and 60 patients with Class I malocclusion were selected as the control group. A mandibular model of each subject was plotted with each tooth on a digitizer. The clinical bracket points of each tooth were plotted, and intercanine and intermolar measurements were taken. The least squares method was used to fit a quartic equation, and the arch form was drawn. The Class III

Two case reports demonstrate a new orthodontic method that offers short treatment times and the ability to simultaneously reshape and increase the buccolingual thickness of the supporting alveolar bone. A 24-year-old man with a Class I severely crowded malocclusion and an overly constricted maxilla with concomitant posterior crossbites and a 17-year-old female with a Class I moderately to severely crowded malocclusion requested shortened orthodontic treatment times. This new surgery technique included buccal and lingual full-thickness flaps, selective partial decortication of the cortical plat

The treatment of skeletal deep bite does not remain stable. The patient was a Japanese woman aged 16 years and 10 months. Her chief complaint was maxillary protrusion. The degree of overjet was + 10.5 mm and overbite was + 5.0 mm; the intermolar relationship was Angle Class II. An excessive curve of Spee was observed in the mandibular arch. A hypodivergent skeletal pattern was indicated by a small mandibular plane angle and gonial angle. The maxillary incisors were proclined and the mandibular incisors were retroclined. Based on the above findings, the patient was diagnosed with Angle Class II
