Integrated clinical treatment of gingival recession secondary to root perforation: case report.

Among the factors that influence the success of treatment of a root perforation, its location and possibility of contamination are determinant because the interaction of these 2 factors may result in significant periodontal injury. The management of cases of hard-to-reach contaminated perforations depends on the choice of an adequate technique. In the case reported in this article, controlled orthodontic tooth extrusion was successfully performed to treat gingival recession secondary to root perforation. The outcomes showed that this technique preserves the zone of attached gingiva, maintains

Cancer of the buccal mucosa ranks fourth in the structure of cancers. Pretumor processes of the buccal mucosa are Bouin's disease, leukoplakia verrucosa, papillomatosis, erosive ulcerative and hyperkeratotic lupus erythematosus and lichen planus, and postradiation stomatitis. Two clinical cases of cancer of the tongue in young men aged 27 years are described. Preventive measures are treatment of pretumor processes in the buccal mucosa, absolute refusal from caustics and from dentures made of different materials, regular check-ups of patients, consultations at specialized oncological institutio

Craniofacial and Dental Abnormalities in Children With Intrauterine Growth Restriction: A Comparative Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) has been linked to disturbances in growth after birth and various developmental anomalies. However, its impact on the shape of the face and dental health is still a question. Exploring these links can be helpful for the early prevention and orthodontic treatment of a pediatric population. OBJECTIVE: Comparison of differences in craniofacial morphometric parameters and dental abnormalities of children with IUGR and healthy children. METHODS: A cross-sectional case-control study was performed in 60 children aged between 3 and 7 years (30 IUGR;

Rapid maxillary expansion with palatal anchorage of the hyrax expansion screw--pilot study with case presentation.

BACKGROUND: Rapid maxillary expansion (RME) with the appliance fixed at the crowns of the first premolars and molars leads not only to transversal expansion but also to tipping of the anchorage teeth and a risk of increased tooth mobility as well as of root and bone resorptions. These disadvantages were to be avoided by fixing the transversal screw directly to the hard palate. MATERIAL AND METHOD: Following preliminary experimental work to determine the extent to which the hard palate could be loaded with orthodontic implants, two female patients were treated for extreme transverse maxillary

Transcriptomic response to compressive force simulating orthodontic tooth movement in cultured porcine epithelial cell rests of Malassez.

Mechanical stress on the periodontal ligaments, such as orthodontic force, causes the failure of homeostasis-inducing inflammation leading to inflammatory root resorption and replacement resorption. Despite these developments during orthodontic treatment, little is known about its relationship to the epithelial cell rests of Malassez (ERM) located in the periodontal ligament. To address this gap, RNA sequencing was performed on non-compression and compression forced porcine ERM groups subjected to 4.0 g/cm2 for 12 h. The results showed 529 upregulated and 273 downregulated genes with more than

Force-Loaded Cementocytes Regulate Osteoclastogenesis via S1P/S1PR1/Rac1 Axis.

Orthodontically induced inflammatory root resorption (OIIRR) is the major iatrogenic complication of orthodontic treatment, seriously endangering tooth longevity and impairing masticatory function. Osteoclasts are thought to be the primary effector cells that initiate the pathological process of OIIRR; however, the cellular and molecular mechanisms responsible for OIIRR remain unclear. Our previous studies revealed that cementocytes, the major mechanically responsive cells in cementum, respond to compressive stress to activate and influence osteoclasts locally. For this study, we hypothesized

Three-dimensional comparison of the effects of sliding mechanics in labial and lingual orthodontics using the finite element method.

INTRODUCTION: The extraction of maxillary first premolars is usually the treatment of choice to resolve crowding, alveolar protrusion, or Class II malocclusion. The demand for a lingual orthodontic treatment is increasing because of its esthetic value; therefore, understanding lingual biomechanics is essential to every clinician. This study compared the 3-dimensional (3D) effects of sliding mechanics in labial and lingual orthodontics using the finite element method. METHODS: Twelve 3D finite element models were created with different power arm heights and miniscrew positions. A 150 g of retr

Editorial: Airways and malocclusion: etiology and treatment outcomes.

The correlation between the upper airway and malocclusion is still a controversial issue. Craniofacial abnormalities and dental malocclusions, such as mandibular retrusion, maxillary constriction, and vertical skeletal discrepancies, are strongly associated with reduced airway patency and increased pharyngeal collapsibility. This relationship underscores the importance of evaluating craniofacial morphology in both the diagnosis and management of OSAS. Treatment aims not only to reduce apneic events and improve sleep quality but also to restore normal breathing dynamics and prevent long-term ca

Unveiling the Journey: A Case Report of Managing an Impacted Central Incisor.

Although impaction of the maxillary permanent central incisor is uncommon in dentistry due to its significance to facial aesthetics which are challenging to treat. To abstain from the consequences related to aesthetic and functional occlusion, early detection of an impacted central incisor is imperative. This case report describes a male patient, aged 22 years, who had an impacted central incisor tooth in the maxillary anterior region. A surgery was performed to remove the impacted supernumerary tooth that was preventing the eruption of the central incisor. Using a combination of surgical expo

[How I explore … a dento-maxillofacial dysmorphosis].

Dento-maxillofacial dysmorphoses represent a considerable area of maxillofacial surgery. Their incidence has constantly been on the rise since the beginning of the century. This can be explained by variations in the food and society habits. We will first discuss the various causes (congenital and environnemental) and the pathophysiology of these disorders. Then, we will separate them according to the skeletal and Angle's classifications. We will examine the predictive criteria of these dysmorphoses from the youngest age and consider their clinical and cephalometrical diagnosis. We will envisage

Esthetic and functional rehabilitation for oligodontia in the mixed dentition: case report.

Tooth agenesis can be considered the most common anomaly of craniofacial development in humans, with an estimated prevalence reaching up to 20% worldwide. Treatments for tooth agenesis include orthodontic space closure, use of fixed or removable dentures, and placement of dental implants. Some of these options may not be applicable to children in mixed dentition because they can prevent the normal development of facial bones. A multidisciplinary, staged approach considering the number, size, and development of the remaining teeth in the long term would be the most suitable treatment. The purpo

Management of Delayed Eruption of Permanent Maxillary Incisor associated with the Presence of Supernumerary Teeth: A Case Report.

A supernumerary tooth is one that is additional to the normal series and can be found in almost any region of the dental arch. Clinically, supernumerary teeth are able to cause different local disorders. It is important for the dentist to be aware of the clinical complications of supernumerary teeth, the most common being the delayed eruption of permanent teeth. Early diagnosis and management of supernumerary teeth is important to prevent the need for more complex surgical and orthodontic treatment. This case report highlights the problem of delayed eruption of permanent maxillary left central

Unerupted incisors.

Fifty consecutive cases presenting with unerupted maxillary incisors at orthodontic clinics were recorded and progress of the unerupted tooth followed up over a 4-year period following the exposure of the unerupted tooth (including removal of supernumerary tooth, etc., if present). The occlusal level, rotation, tilting, and general appearance were assessed at the conclusion of the investigation and the results are presented in this report. The earlier the removal of the causative factor preventing eruption of the incisor the better is the prognosis, and it is suggested that all teeth that have

Evaluation of the efficacy of ozonated olive oil over commercially available toothpastes in remineralisation of white spot lesions: An in vitro study.

INTRODUCTION: During the course of orthodontic treatment, a proper hygiene protocol is advised to all patients. Maintenance of oral hygiene prevents potential damage to hard tissue along with soft tissue. Despite preventive oral hygiene measures during fixed orthodontic therapy, some patients develop white spot lesions (WSL), compromising aesthetics and posing a potential risk of developing a carious lesion. Tooth remineralisation using calcium, fluoride, phosphate and other biocompatible agents is a potential solution. AIMS: This study aimed to compare the remineralising potential of Remin P

[Cranial asymmetries and their dento-facial and occlusal effects].

Cases of occlusal asymmetry detected in the temporary dentition are frequently associated with skeletal asymmetries of the cranial base. They should be corrected as soon as possible. Symmetry of these dental groups is achieved with the use of mini-screws implanted in designated sectors of the hard palate. When a new occlusal plane derived from the corrected maxilla is obtained, the mandible will re-center itself in relation to it. As a result cranial bones can remodel and the possibility of induced temporo-mandibular disorders is greatly reduced.
