PURPOSE: Resection remains the most reliable treatment for established heterotopic ossification, despite questions regarding its effectiveness due to the potential for complications. This study evaluated the clinical outcomes and complications of neurogenic heterotopic ossification (NHO) resection in stroke patients' ankylosed hips.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed nine hip NHO resections performed on seven patients from 2010 to 2018. The pre- and postoperative range of motion of the operated hip were compared. Analysis of postoperative complications, including infection, re

BACKGROUND: Heterotopic ossification (HO), a common complication after elbow trauma, causes severe limb disability. Resection is usually performed for posttraumatic elbow HO (PTEHO) to regain mobility, and although heavily reported, there has been no long-term (minimum, 5-year) follow-up.
METHODS: A total of 173 patients who underwent PTEHO resection were followed up for a minimum of 5 years in 4 hospitals between January of 2015 and August of 2016. Demographics, disease characteristics, and preoperative and minimum 5-year assessments were collected. After controlling for potential variables

Heterotopic ossification is the development of mature lamellar bone in soft tissues. Heterotopic ossification can occur in up to 23% of patients after amputation. Heterotopic ossification is often painful, causing significant dysfunction. While radiotherapy is used to prevent heterotopic ossification before formation, there is a dearth of literature on using radiotherapy to treat existing heterotopic ossification. This case report describes the use of late radiotherapy for the management of existing heterotopic ossification that developed after a transfemoral amputation. A 61-yr-old woman with

Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP) is a devastating disease of progressive heterotopic bone formation for which effective treatments are currently unavailable. FOP is caused by dominant gain-of-function mutations in the receptor ACVR1 (also known as ALK2), which render the receptor inappropriately responsive to activin ligands. In previous studies, we developed a genetic mouse model of FOP that recapitulates most clinical aspects of the disease. In this model, genetic loss of the wild-type Acvr1 allele profoundly exacerbated heterotopic ossification, suggesting the hypothesis that the

Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP) is a rare genetic disease caused by mutations in activin A receptor type I/activin-like kinase 2 (ACVR1/ALK2), a bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) type I receptor, resulting in the formation of extraskeletal or heterotopic ossification (HO) and other features consistent with premature aging. During the first decade of life, episodic bouts of inflammatory swellings (flare-ups) occur, which are typically triggered by soft tissue trauma. Through an endochondral process, these exacerbations ultimately result in skeletal muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia

BACKGROUND: The development of heterotopic ossification (HO) might nullify any benefit of multiple-ligament reconstruction of the knee joint. The purpose of this study was to investigate the incidence and the specific explanatory factors for the development of HO after multiple-ligament reconstruction of the knee joint.
METHODS: From January 2011 to June 2016, 72 consecutive patients with knee dislocations received multiple-ligament reconstructions, of which 57 (79%) were available for a minimum follow up of 12 months and were included in this study. Anteroposterior (AP) and lateral radiograp

PURPOSE: Early treatment of heterotopic ossification (HO) is currently limited by delayed diagnosis due to limited visualization at early time points. In this study, we validate the use of spectral ultrasound imaging (SUSI) in an animal model to detect HO as early as one week after burn tenotomy.
METHODS: Concurrent SUSI, micro CT, and histology at 1, 2, 4, and 9weeks post-injury were used to follow the progression of HO after an Achilles tenotomy and 30% total body surface area burn (n=3-5 limbs per time point). To compare the use of SUSI in different types of injury models, mice (n=5 per gr

Trauma-induced heterotopic ossification is an intriguing phenomenon involving the inappropriate ossification of soft tissues within the body such as the muscle and ligaments. This inappropriate formation of bone is highly prevalent in those affected by blast injuries. Here, we developed a simplified cell culture model to evaluate the molecular events involved in heterotopic ossification onset that arise from the shock wave component of the disease. We exposed three subtypes of human mesenchymal cells in vitro to a single, high-energy shock wave and observed increased transcription in the osteo

Progressive heterotopic ossification (HO) is a rare disease of genetic inheritance. Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP) is an identified debilitating subcategory in which anomalous ossification usually begins in childhood. Congenital big toe anomalies and specific patterns of progression of ossification confirm the classic disease. Adult onset disease is extremely rare. The mechanism of disease progression is still unclear, and there is no consensus on the treatment modalities. We report a 47-year-old man with adult-onset progressive HO around the bilateral pelvic and shoulder girdles

Progressive osseous heteroplasia (POH) is a rare, disabling disease of heterotopic ossification (HO) that progresses from skin and subcutaneous tissues into deep skeletal muscle. POH occurs in the absence of multiple developmental features of Albright hereditary osteodystrophy (AHO) or hormone resistance, clinical manifestations that are also associated with GNAS inactivation. However, occasional patients with AHO and pseudohypoparathyroidism 1a/c (PHP1a/c; AHO features plus hormone resistance) have also been described who have progressive HO. This study was undertaken to define the diagnostic

INTRODUCTION: Heterotopic ossification (HO) is the formation of bone in soft tissues. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings on clinical suspicion of HO in the knee joint of patients hospitalised in the intensive care unit (ICU).
METHODS: This was a case series of 11 patients requiring prolonged ventilation in the ICU who had the following diagnoses: head trauma (nine), necrotising pancreatitis (one), and fat embolism (one). On clinical suspicion of HO, x-rays and MRI of the knee joint were performed. Follow-up x-rays and MRI were also p

UNLABELLED: Pseudohypoparathyroidism (PHP) Ia is a rare condition associated with multiple hormone resistance and the Albright Hereditary Osteodystrophy (AHO) phenotype. Progressive osseous heteroplasia (POH) is characterized by progressive ossifications of dermal, skeletal muscle and deep connective tissue during childhood. Both PHP Ia and POH are caused by heterozygous inactivating mutations in the GNAS gene. Maternal inheritance of a GNAS mutation leads to an AHO phenotype with hormonal resistance (PHP Ia), whereas paternal inheritance leads to an AHO phenotype without the hormonal resistan

The medical records of 209 patients with acute traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI) admitted to the SCI rehabilitation unit from 7/1/88 through 12/31/92 were reviewed. Whereas the incidence of heterotopic ossification (HO) and deep venous thrombosis (DVT) in this population were 16.7% and 14.3%, respectively, 36.6% of the individuals with DVT had HO. 31.4% of those with HO developed DVT at some time during their acute or rehabilitation hospitalization. The overall incidence of coexistent DVT and HO was 5.3%. The correlation between the occurrence of HO and DVT in this SCI population reached stat

BACKGROUND: Heterotopic ossification (HO) is a recognized complication following operative fixation of elbow trauma. While indomethacin prophylaxis is well established in hip and acetabular surgery, evidence for its role in elbow injuries remains limited. This randomized controlled trial evaluated whether oral indomethacin reduces the incidence and severity of HO after surgical treatment of acute elbow fractures and dislocations.
METHODS: Eighty-six adults with acute elbow injuries requiring surgical fixation were randomized 1:1 to receive either oral indomethacin (25 mg 3 times daily for thr

Heterotopic ossification (HO), the abnormal formation of bone in soft tissues, is a debilitating complication that occurs after severe burns, trauma, and joint replacement surgery. Current diagnostic methods detect HO only after substantial progression, limiting opportunities for early intervention. In this study, we show that circulating mesenchymal progenitor cells (cMPCs), isolated using a microfluidic iChip from patients undergoing hip replacement and a mouse model of traumatic HO, exhibit HO-associated gene expression as early as 6 hours post-injury-41 days before radiographic detection.

Background/Objectives: Neurogenic heterotopic ossification (HO) is an abnormal formation of lamellar bone in soft tissues, frequently developing near major joints in patients with spinal cord injury. While imaging provides valuable diagnostic insights, large and anatomically complex HO often requires advanced preoperative planning to minimize surgical risks. This study presents the development and clinical application of a structured six-stage workflow integrating three-dimensional (3D) technologies for the preoperative planning and surgical resection of giant iliofemoral HO.
