Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI) is characterized by bone fragility. At least seven discrete types have been described ranging from mild disease to a lethal form. In a large number of cases, mutations in one of the two genes encoding type I collagen have been found. In forms recently described (types V, VI, VII), such mutations have been excluded. In two other forms, (Bruck, and osteoporosis - pseudoglioma syndromes) defects in other proteins have been characterized. In OI, bone fragility stems from: decreased bone mass, disturbed organization of bone tissue, and altered bone geometry (size and sh…

Skeletal abnormalities such as hypertrophic callus formation and "popcorn" calcifications are rare radiological findings of osteogenesis imperfecta, causing tumor-like appearances on imaging. We report on a 7-year-old girl with osteogenesis imperfecta presenting with hepatomegaly and palpable lymphadenopathy in the left inguinal region on physical examination. Computed tomography examination revealed a high-density mass-like lesion of the manubrium sterni. Ultrasonography and a lateral roentgenogram of the chest verified that this was a pseudomass caused by a bowed sternal manubrium.

Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is a hereditary disease of connective tissue and affects bone, dentine, sclera, joint, tendon, blood vessels, heart valves, and skin. Approximately 50% of the adult patients with OI have associated hearing impairment. To date, only three cases of cochlear implantation in adults with OI have been reported, but none in children. We present a case of cochlear implantation in a congenitally deaf 6-year-old boy with OI. The Nucleus 24 Contour device was successfully implanted using the suprameatal approach (SMA). At 6 months post-initial stimulation there was no evidenc…

BACKGROUND: Skin mechanics may be affected by several dermatological and systemic conditions. The skin can act as a marker of generalized disease. Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is a heritable disorder characterized by fragile bones caused by a generalized disorder of collagen. The dermis has a relative increase of argyrophil and elastic fibers and a deficiency of adult collagen. The collagen defect is well described, but functional changes in tissue mechanics have not been studied in the skin. The functional changes may reflect general changes and may give insight into the pathogenesis of clini…

UNLABELLED: Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is a genetic disorder of connective tissue. Progressive hearing loss is one of the principal symptoms of OI, affecting about 50% of adult patients. Hearing loss may also occur in childhood and results in additional disability in education and psychosocial adaptation and aggravates the physical handicap. This can be avoided by appropriate otological and audiological treatment. In a nationwide search, 254 Finnish patients with OI were identified indicating a prevalence of 4.9/100,000. Of the 60 children, 45 aged between 4 and 16 years accepting to partici…

A case of osteosarcoma arising in the scapula of a 37 year old woman with severe congenital sporadic white sclera type osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is presented. Osteosarcoma occurs as a sporadic rather than a related occurrence in patients with OI. A delay in the diagnosis of osteosarcoma may occur due to the similarity in symptomatology between the two conditions and because of the difficulty in differentiating between hyperplastic callus and tumor using conventional radiographic imaging techniques.

Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) and hyperparathyroidism (HTP) are disorders affecting the skeletal system and calcium metabolism not evidently related to one another. We report a case in which both OI and HPT were present. Our female patient presented with hypercalcaemia (S-Ca2+ 1.59 mmol/l; normal range 1.15-1.30) and 4-gland parathyroid hyperplasia at 30 years of age. Since her first year she had fractures, blue sclera, hypermobile joints, short stature (height 1.51 m, weight 49.5 kg) but normal hearing, and dentiogenesis imperfecta (tooth disease caused by defective formation of dentin) was ab…

Osteogenesis imperfecta in its most severe forms has a devastating effect on the peripheral and central skeleton, and patients are unable to walk. Spinal deformity is common and causes difficulty in sitting, pain and potentially life-threatening complications. Instrumented spinal fusion might be considered the treatment of choice, but the bone may be too weak to sustain the implants and autogenous bone graft is poor in quantity and quality. We present the preliminary results of a technique of fusion without instrumentation and using Keil bone graft in 5 patients with severe osteogenesis imperf…

Fitting children and infants who have osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) with braces has posed substantial problems of implementation and patient management For the past twelve years bracing has been an important component of a patient research and management program conducted at the National Institutes of Health. By using the smallest manufactured parts and developing a wealth of experience, functional and well-fitting braces have been provided to a number of tiny and small children. Bracing allows these children to stand and walk earlier than would have otherwise been possible. Braces are used in …

Zeitschrift fur Kinderchirurgie : organ der Deutschen, der Schweizerischen und der Osterreichischen Gesellschaft fur Kinderchirurgie = Surgery in infancy and childhood1989ger
Between 1973 and 1988 twenty children with osteogenesis imperfecta were treated in the Department of Paediatric Surgery at the University of Berne, Switzerland. Our initial experience with the first 15 children, who had virtually no treatment during infancy and early childhood showed that they later developed severe soft tissue and skeletal deformities. Since resulting contractures and curvatures of the long bones are difficult to correct, we changed our therapeutic approach. Traditional therapy in OI was limited to the correction of bony malformations. Considering the fact, that the different…
