Osteopathia Striata with Cranial Sclerosis (OSCS) is uncommon, and a concurrent diagnosis of Robin sequence (RS) is rare. This series describes 2 infants presenting with the combination of RS treated with mandibular distraction osteogenesis (MDO) and OSCS. The first patient, who presented with a more severe form of OSCS, required tracheostomy due to persistent apneic episodes after MDO. Upper airway obstruction in the second patient was successfully managed with MDO, suggesting that the OSCS severity may help predict MDO outcomes in this rare subset of patients.

BACKGROUND: Dense Bone Islands (DBIs) are anatomic variants defined as radiopaque lesions consisting of hamartomatous cortical bone, often presenting as incidental radiographic findings. DBIs can also be known as idiopathic osteosclerosis, bone whorl, focal periapical osteopetrosis, bone scar and enostosis. We found a paucity of literature for management and reporting of this condition in children. For this reason, the authors describe sixteen cases of children and adolescents with dense bony islands and suggest a pathway for management.
CASE SERIES: Cases presented to the RNENT and Eastman D…

CASE: A 72-year-old man presented for evaluation of bony prominences over extremities. Radiographic imaging demonstrated masses of varying sizes extending from the cortical surfaces without medullary continuity. The patient had a history of Freon inhalation abuse and was diagnosed with skeletal fluorosis due to elevated serum fluoride levels. He underwent an uncomplicated excision of a left fibular mass that was threatening skin breakdown.
CONCLUSIONS: This is the first reported surgical case of skeletal fluorosis demonstrating continued enlargement of bony prominences throughout the body. Sk

We describe ante- and postnatal imaging of a 1-year-old otherwise healthy girl with Raine syndrome. She presented with neonatal respiratory distress related to a pyriform aperture stenosis, which was diagnosed on CT. Signs of chondrodysplasia punctata, sagittal vertebral clefting and intervertebral disc and renal calcifications were also found on imaging. This new case confirms that Raine syndrome is not always lethal. The overlapping imaging signs with chondrodysplasia punctata and the disseminated calcifications give new insights into its pathophysiology.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the changes in subchondral bone that occur with the onset and progression of osteoarthritis (OA) from macroradiographic assessment of patient's hand and knee joints.
DESIGN: The high magnification and spatial resolution of macroradiography permits detailed anatomical changes to be detected in OA joints. Data on the subchondral cortical and cancellous bone, recorded from both cross-sectional and longitudinal studies of hand and knee OA, are described and discussed with reference to recent findings on the altered biomechanical properties of OA bone.
RESULTS: In OA joints

We made a retrospective evaluation of clinical and radiologic features, treatment, and outcome of Erdheim-Chester disease, a rare non-Langerhans cell histiocytosis. We had 7 patients coming from 3 French teaching hospitals and reviewed 52 cases from the literature. These cases were considered to have Erdheim-Chester disease when they had either typical bone radiographs (symmetrical long bones osteosclerosis) and/or histologic criteria disclosing histiocytic infiltration without features for Langerhans cell histiocytosis (no S-100 protein, no intracytoplasmic Birbeck granules). Ages at diagnosi…

The authors report the radiological signs observed in 14 patients between the ages of 3 months and 16 years, suffering from type I primary h … nd appeared to replace dense bands which moved towards the diaphysis. The other signs detected were osteosclerosis of the vertebrae and ilium (4 patients) and epiphyseal subchondral clear bands (one patient).

Renal osteodystrophy is one of the major causes of morbidity in patients receiving long-term dialysis treatment for renal failure and after transplantation. Its clinical implications include high-turnover bone disease, low-turnover bone disease, osteomalacia, osteosclerosis, and osteoporosis. A 13-year-old boy who had been on dialysis treatment for renal failure was admitted with a pathologic supracondylar femur fracture after a minor trauma. Radiological studies showed cystic lesions in the femoral supracondyle, left acetabular roof, and right proximal and distal tibia. Based on radiologic ap…

Pancytopenia refers to the simultaneous reduction of all peripheral blood cell lines and is a hematologic finding often indicative of severe and potentially life-threatening disease. Although usually not associated, hypocalcemia and pancytopenia may co-occur, suggesting a common etiology. We report a case of a caucasian woman in her late 50s with asthenia, paraesthesia and nausea. Laboratory results showed severe hypocalcemia, anemia, elevated alkaline phosphatase and lactate dehydrogenase. A computed tomography scan revealed extensive osteosclerosis, suggesting osteoblastic metastasis. Progre…
