The nucleotide sequence and genome organization of human papilloma virus type 11.

The complete nucleotide sequence of human papilloma virus type 11 (HPV11) DNA (7931 bp) was determined. HPV11 DNA which has been isolated from laryngeal papillomas and from genital warts (condylomata acuminata) shows a high degree of sequence homology to HPV6b (82%). The arrangement of open reading frames is very similar to HPV6b, the homology of the deduced amino acid sequences varies between 58 and 92%. Characteristic features of the noncoding region between the L1 and E6 open reading frames is an AT-rich domain of about 200 bp with extended stretches of alternating thymine-purine bases and

Evaluation of high-risk human papillomavirus in sinonasal papillomas and squamous cell carcinomas.

The sinonasal tract is considered a second hotspot for human papillomavirus (HPV)-related tumors in the head and neck, with HPV being identified in up to 62% of squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs) and 38% of papillomas. There is limited data from geographical regions with low prevalence of high-risk (HR)-HPV on the association of HR-HPV in sinonasal neoplasms and on utility of p16 as a surrogate marker. p16 immunohistochemistry, HR-HPV mRNA ISH and quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR) were performed on a retrospective cohort of sinonasal papillomas and SCCs. KRAS mutation analysis was done in oncocyt

Septotomy: a useful approach to the anterior maxillary sinus.

In endonasal surgery, approaching the anterior maxillary wall via the ipsilateral nostril is difficult. It is necessary to have good visual and instrument control when removing lesions such as inverted papilloma. We describe an approach through a temporary septotomy which provides good access from the contralateral nostril. The contralateral mucoperichondrial incision is anterior and the ipsilateral one posterior. The cartilage is hinged superiorly. There is minimal chance of perforation.

Nasal polyps - histopathologic spectrum.

Analysis of 345 polypoidal masses in nose and nasal sinuses with clinical diagnosis of nasal polyp, observed in 10 years, revealed 175 (50.7%) non- neoplastic lesions and 170 (49.3%) neoplasms. Among the non- neoplastic lesions, there were 110 cases (62.8%) of true nasal polyps including 74 cases (67.3%) of allergic polyps and 36 (32.7%) inflammatory ones. The next common non- neoplastic polyp was due to rhinosporidiosis (31.4%). Benign neoplastic lesions consisted mainly of haemangioma (45.7%), angiofibroma (23.2%), fibroma (6.2%), transitional cell papilloma, inverted papilloma, adenoma-3.9%…

Utilizing a publicly accessible automated machine learning platform to enable diagnosis before tumor surgery.

BACKGROUND: In benign tumors with potential for malignant transformation, sampling error during pre-operative biopsy can significantly change patient counseling and surgical planning. Sinonasal inverted papilloma (IP) is the most common benign soft tissue tumor of the sinuses, yet it can undergo malignant transformation to squamous cell carcinoma (IP-SCC), for which the planned surgery could be drastically different. Artificial intelligence (AI) could potentially help with this diagnostic challenge. METHODS: CT images from 19 institutions were used to train the Google Cloud Vertex AI platform

Giant Oncocytic Sinonasal Papilloma: A Rare Case.

Sinonasal papilloma is a rare benign neoplasm arising from the Schneiderian epithelium lining the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses. It is classified into three histological subtypes: exophytic, inverted, and oncocytic, the latter being the least common. We report a case of a giant oncocytic sinonasal papilloma treated by endoscopic surgery, highlighting the diagnostic approach and comparing the findings with the existing literature. Histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis. Immunohistochemical analysis demonstrated p53 positivity in both the cytoplasm and nucleus, and Ki-67 show

Four unusual neoplasms of the nasopharynx.

Epidermoid carcinoma and angiofibroma are the commonly diagnosed lesions of the nasopharynx. Less common are unusual tumors of epithelial origin as well as those from endothelial and mesenchymal precursors. Otolaryngologists must be knowledgeable in the literature associated with these tumors to facilitate early diagnosis and to institute appropriate therapy. Cases of verrucous carcinoma, inverted papilloma, adenoid cystic carcinoma, and extramedullary plasmacytoma are presented. Current literature is reviewed and accepted modes of treatment are outlined.

An aggressive and invasive growth of juvenile papillomas involving the total respiratory tract.

A malignant course of juvenile laryngeal papillomatosis has rarely been reported. In the present case the patient had had laryngeal papillomas since the age of three years. The papillomas gradually spread to the entire respiratory system, and during 30 years the patient was operated on more than 80 times. At present an invasive tumour spreading from the tongue into the parapharyngeal space, extending to the cranial base, has been demonstrated by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Intralesional therapy with Cidofovir, a promising antiviral drug against human papillomavirus (HPV) infection, was s

[Transitional cell carcinoma of the ureter with inverted proliferation: a difficult case to make a differential diagnosis with ureteral polyp].

A 59-year-old man was admitted to our hospital in June 2001 for evaluation of an asymptomatic microscopic hematuria. One year prior to presentation, he had a spontaneous discharge of a left ureteral stone. Excretory urography and retrograde pyelography showed a filling defect in the middle portion of the left ureter. Cystoscopic examination did not reveal any abnormality, and urinary cytology was class I. Cold cup biopsy was performed under ureteroscopy, and pathology revealed inflammatory fibrovascular tissue but with no malignancy. Selective washing cytology was class III, whereas selective

EGFR mutations in sinonasal squamous neoplasms: Novel hotspot for exon 20 insertions.

EGFR mutations and oncogenic high-risk (HR) HPV have been suggested to be mutually exclusive pathways in pathogenesis of sinonasal squamous neoplasms which include sinonasal papilloma and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). In Indian patients, HR-HPV association is rare; however, there is no data on EGFR mutations in these tumors. One-hundred-eleven cases of sinonasal squamous neoplasms were interrogated for EGFR exon 19 and 20 mutations, including 48 inverted papillomas (IP), 15 SCC arising in the background of inverted papilloma (IP-SCC) and 48 de novo SCC. HR-HPV association was determined by p1

[Unilateral diseases of the maxillary sinus].

Unilateral diseases of the maxillary sinus are among the most common rhinologic diagnoses. The diversity of these diseases can represent a challenge for the treating physician. The spectrum ranges from harmless maxillary sinus cysts that seldom require treatment, to highly aggressive malignant tumors. Special attention should be given to the management of inverted papilloma. These benign tumors are characterized by high recurrence rates and the potential for malignant transformation. The key to minimizing recurrence is precise surgical intervention. Other unilateral maxillary sinus diseases su

FGFR3::TACC3 Fusion and NOTCH1 Loss-of-Function in a Case of HPV-Associated Sinonasal Squamous Cell Carcinoma: Diagnostic Challenge and Implications for Targeted Therapy.

Sinonasal squamous cell carcinoma (SNSCC) comprises a heterogeneous group of tumors with emerging molecular subtypes. Human papillomavirus (HPV)-associated SNSCC is a distinct entity, although actionable genomic alterations beyond HPV-driven pathways remain underexplored. Distinguishing HPV-associated SNSCC from carcinoma ex inverted papilloma can be particularly challenging in limited biopsy specimens, as these lesions may appear morphologically similar. We report a case of HPV-associated SNSCC with concurrent FGFR3::TACC3 fusion and NOTCH1 p.C1416 stop-gain mutation.

A Rare and Unexpected Reason for Unilateral Epistaxis: Nasal Septal Schwannoma.

Nasal septal schwannoma is a rare tumor. It causes complaints such as nasal congestion, nosebleeds, and headaches. There are many diseases such as nasal polyps, antrochoanal polyp, chronic rhinosinusitis, concha bullosa, inverted papilloma, and retention cyst with schwannoma diagnosis. The diagnosis is made histopathologically, and the treatment is surgery. In this case report, we presented a male patient with septal schwannoma who had nasal obstruction for a year and reviewed the last 20 years of literature on nasal schwannoma.

Diagnostic algorithm for unilateral sinus disease: a 15-year retrospective review.

BACKGROUND: Patients presenting with unilateral sinus symptoms or nasal polyps raise concerns about sinister pathology. Yet despite the relatively common occurrence of this presentation, and its potential severity, an organized diagnostic approach to unilateral sinus disease (USD) has never been defined. The purpose of this work was to propose a diagnostic algorithm for managing patients with USD based on prior experience. METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of the medical records of all patients with USD who underwent surgical intervention and had pathological specimens during a 15-
