Diagnosis of pediatric paragonimiasis is difficult because of its non-specific clinical manifestations. We retrospectively reviewed the records of pediatric paragonimiasis in Children's Hospital of Fudan University from January 2011 to May 2019. The confirmed diagnosis of paragonimiasis was based on positive anti-parasite serological tests from the local Center for Disease Control (CDC). A total of 11 patients (mean age: 7.7 ± 3.1, male-female ratio: 7:4) diagnosed as paragonimiasis were included. 81.8% were from endemic areas such as Sichuan and Yunnan, and 36% had a clear history of raw crab…

INTRODUCTION: Paragonimiasis or lung fluke disease is a typical food-borne parasitic zoonosis caused by infection with Paragonimus species. The Paragonimus is a trematode that mainly infects the lungs of humans after eating an infected raw or undercooked crab or crayfish.
CASE PRESENTATION: Herein we report a case of peritoneal Paragonimiasis in the gallbladder of a 58-year-old female from Rukum district of Nepal. It was an incidental diagnosis following routine histopathological examination of the cholecystectomy specimen. She presented with the symptoms of abdominal pain, fever, cough, and …

Paragonimiasis, an important food-borne zoonosis, is caused by lung flukes of the genus Paragonimus. Several million people are actually infected or at risk. Paragonimiasis is a re-emerging disease in developing countries. Diagnosis of pulmonary paragonimiasis is made by finding eggs in sputa and/or fecal samples. Eggs are typically not found in ectopic paragonimiasis cases, so diagnosis depends on supportive information, such as a history of eating fresh water crabs or crayfishes, radiographic findings and immunological tests. Here, a new point-of-care-testing (POCT) tool is presented. It use…

BACKGROUND: Paragonimiasis infection has no specific symptoms or typical radiologic findings, leading to the possibility of misdiagnosis. Thus, the objective of this study was to analyze clinical and radiological features, and treatment outcome of paragonimiasis in children in Southwest China to improve the awareness of this disease.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the records of children diagnosed with paragonimiasis in West China Second University Hospital between 2005 and 2016. The confirmed diagnosis of paragonimiasis was based on epidemiology history and seropositivity for paragonim…

This study is to investigate the clinical features, neuroimaging and diagnosis of adult cerebral paragonimiasis. One case of patient with cerebral paragonimiasis as retrospectively analyzed in this study. Analysis included medical history, clinical manifestations and neuroimaging. Blood test, body fluid examination, immunological test, stool examination and imaging examination were performed. Many symptoms such as headache, hemiplegia, chest pain, cough, and pleural effusion were detected in the patient. The features of "tunnel-like shape" and "ring-like shape", the intracranial hemorrhage and…

Paragonimiasis is a parasitic disease caused by Paragonimus trematodes, which are typical food-borne zoonoses prevalent in Asia, West Africa, and Latin America. A clinical infection by paragonimiasis usually begins with cough, haemoptysis, and dyspnoea, some of which overlap with symptoms of tuberculosis and other pulmonary disorders. Human paragonimiasis presents as a complex set of symptoms that may result in misdiagnosis and delayed treatment. The parotid is seldom affected. We describe the case of a 5-year-old boy with paragonimiasis who presented with a swelling of the parotid and no pulm…

A 73-year-old man was referred to our hospital because of left chest pain, left pleural effusion and peripheral blood eosinophilia. After three months, left pleural effusion resolved without treatment and the etiology remained unclarified. Three years later, he was admitted for evaluation of right pleural effusion. Peripheral blood eosinophil count and serum IgE value were elevated. Eosinophilia was also observed in the pleural effusion. The diagnosis of paragonimiasis westermani was confirmed by immunoserological examination of the serum and by detection of Paragonimius eggs in the pleural ef…

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the usefulness of dot immuno-gold filtration assay(DIGFA) for the diagnosis of Paragonimus infection.
METHODS: During 2003 to 2006, 72 cases suspected of paragonimiasis in Zhejiang Province were examined with DIGFA for rapid detection of specific antibodies against Paragonimus (Pw-DIGFA). The diagnosis was primarily established with the presence of antibodies, experience of ingesting raw freshwater crabs or crayfishes and clinical presentations. The cases were treated with praziquantel and followed-up at 3 and/or 6 months post-treatment. Antibody level in patients (pre-…

BACKGROUND: Paragonimiasis westermani (Pw), a common parasitic zoonosis in Asia, is typically associated with eosinophilia. Th2 cytokines seem to have an important role in the clinical manifestations of this disease. Thymus and activation-regulated chemokine (TARC) is a potential key regulator of Th2-mediated inflammation. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the antigen-specific Th2-dominant responses in patients with Pw.
METHODS: The concentrations of cytokines and chemokines in supernatants of peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC) cultures with or without antigen stimulation…

We report a case of paragonimiasis diagnosed by fine-needle aspiration of a breast mass in a middle-aged Korean female with a history of breast silicone injections. Although parasitoses have been discovered by aspiration of cyst fluid in otherwise sterile sites (i.e., liver and lung), the cystic presentation in the breast of a middle-aged female complicated the diagnosis in this case. Some authors have argued against the routine cytologic examination of nonbloody cyst fluids in premenopausal women, but this protocol may lead to a false negative diagnosis in the rare instance of a parasitic cys…

Here, we report a case of pulmonary paragonimiasis that was improved with initial anti-tuberculosis (TB) therapy but confused with reactivated pulmonary TB. A 53-year-old Chinese female presented with a persistent productive cough with foul smelling phlegm and blood streaked sputum. Radiologic findings showed subpleural cavitary consolidation in the right upper lobe (RUL). Bronchoscopic and cytological examination showed no remarkable medical feature. She was diagnosed with smear-negative TB, and her radiologic findings improved after receiving a 6-month anti-TB therapy. The chest CT scans, ho…

A 41-year-old husband and his 40-year-old wife were in … wife:10,600/μL) with pulmonary effusion, nodular shadow, and pneumothorax in chest X-ray findings. Paragonimiasis was suspected from the episode of consuming the crabs. No parasite eggs were seen in their sputum and stool samples. A multiple-dot ELISA was performed with the sera to screen for parasitic infections, but the result was only weakly positive for P. …
