A brief historical introduction traces the evolution of the concept of hypochondriasis. It is suggested that the term should now be used only as a descriptive adjective when there is a morbid preoccupation with health or body. Social and cultural factors are outlined, as well as problems of measurement. The psychopathology, as formulated by Freud and others, is also described. Clinical aspects are discussed under the headings of general symptoms, pain, smell, bodily appearance, sexual, gastro-intestinal, cardio-respiratory, eyes, and ears, nose and throat. A sample of 72 first-admitted patients with delusional disorder was personally re-examined after a mean of 10 years, and 42 of them after an average of 27 years. The mean observation period for all patients from admission to last follow-up was 20 years (3-39). BACKGROUND: There is little literature on the depiction of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) in movies. In India, Hindi cinema is an important source of public information and misinformation about ECT.
METHODS: We identified depictions of ECT in Hindi cinema through inquiries with e-communities, video libraries, and other sources. We also searched the PubMed database using search terms related to ECT and movies.

The offenders committed to local hospitals in 1962 and 1964 under a hospital order with restriction of discharge were followed up for 15 years with regard to subsequent court appearances, hospital admissions, and death. Immunochemical identification of neurospecific beta 2-globulin (N beta G) in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of mentally healthy subjects and mental patients showed its immunochemical identity in both group. A comparative immunochemical analysis revealed considerable differences in N beta G levels in the CSF in patients with neuropsychic diseases as compared with the control group. The content of N beta G was found to vary in different psychopathological syndromes. It is suggested that variations in N beta G levels in the CSF may be related to psychomotor activity.
