Human T cell lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1)-associated infective dermatitis (ID) is a chronic, severe and recurrent eczema occurring during childhood in patients vertically infected with HTLV-1. HTLV-1-associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesia (HAM/ TSP) is slow and progressive. We report the case of an adolescent female from a non-endemic area for HTLV-1 who presents ID and, most likely, associated HAM/TSP.

HTLV-I was first described as a pathogenic human retrovirus that causes adult T-cell leukemia (ATL). Soon after the discovery of HTLV-I, an association of this virus with a slowly progressive neurological disorder was found independently in Japan and Caribbean islands, and this new clinical entity (HTLV-I-associated myelopathy with tropical spastic paraparesis) was named HAM/TSP. Autopsy findings clarified the chronic inflammatory nature of the disease. Detailed neuropathological analysis demonstrated: (i) T-cell-dominant mononuclear cell infiltration; (ii) diffuse and symmetrical degeneration

We reported the findings of micturitional histories and urodynamic studies in five patients with human T-lymphotropic virus type-1-associated myelopathy. Histories showed that all patients had obstructive as well as irritative micturitional symptoms, and four of their micturitional symptoms appeared from the onset of the disease. Urodynamic studies showed that four of them had residual urine (average 170 ml), all had detrusor hyperreflexia, two had detrusor-sphincter dyssynergia, and none had neurogenic changes in external urethral sphincter electromyography. Our findings of supranuclear type

Among 201 patients diagnosed with HAM/TSP at Kagoshima University, 21 juvenile onset patients had manifested clinical signs and symptoms at less than 15 years of age. They appeared to have common characteristics such as short stature and slight mental retardation. These signs prompted us to investigate five of them endocrinologically; and three patients with pseudohypoparathyroidism (PHP) were confirmed. Serum calcium levels were low, and human parathyroid hormone (PTH) infusion (Ellsworth-Howard test) caused low response in urinary cyclic AMP and phosphorus excretion. The first case had IgA n

Human T cell leukemia virus type I and II are endemic in South West Japan and in large parts of the equatorial belt in Central and South America, in Africa, and in some Pacific islands, areas where 1 to 5% of the general populations are infected. Pockets of high prevalence up to 15% and even 35% can be observed. The transmission of HTLV-I includes: maternal to offspring through breast feeding, sexual mainly from men to women and through blood exchange (blood transfusion, intravenous drug abusers, etc.) The diseases being proven to be caused by HTLV-I, include acute adult T cell leukemias as de

Seven members of a family with an X-linked spastic paraparesis syndrome were analyzed by MR imaging and stimulated echo, solvent-suppressed proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The MR scans of three symptomatic males and two asymptomatic females demonstrated abnormal signal in the supratentorial white matter. Each of these patients had a proton spectroscopic examination of a 2 X 2 X 2 cm voxel localized to the abnormal white matter of the centrum semiovale. The spectra demonstrated depression of N-acetyl aspartate/creatine, N-acetyl aspartate/choline, and creatine/choline ratios com

Osame et al. first described human T cell lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1) associated myelopathy (HAM) as a new clinical entity in 1986. A 23 year old female diagnosed as having HAM whose family had a high frequency of double virus infection with HTLV-1 and hepatitis B virus (HBV) gave reason to suspect mother-to-child transmission of both viruses. No clear coincidence in the mode of transmission of HTLV-1 and HBV was found. It is presumed that the mechanism of infection with HTLV-1 and HBV differ slightly.

Human T-lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-I) is a retrovirus associated with adult T-cell lymphoma (ATL) and HTLV-I-associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP). In addition to HAM/TSP and ATL, HTLV-I-associated encephalopathy and cerebellar involvement have been reported. We report a case of an 87-year-old Japanese woman presenting with progressive dysarthria and gait disturbance. Neurological examination showed word-finding difficulty, scanning speech, saccadic eye movements, ocular dysmetria, gaze-evoked nystagmus and bilateral dysmetria. There was no motor weakness or spastic

BACKGROUND: HTLV-1-associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP) is an infectious chronic-inflammatory disease, which can lead to lower limb motions.
METHODS: The study evaluated the effects of serial Pilates exercises on the clinical and immunological profiles of patients with HAM/TSP. Eight patients with ages ranging from 39 to 70 years old (2 males and 6 females), 2 wheelchair users and 6 with compromised gait, were evaluated. The patients were submitted to 20 Pilates sessions for 10 weeks. Data were collected at 3 time points (beginning of the study, after Pilates sessions

We demonstrate a significantly high incidence of human T-cell leukemia virus type 1 (HTLV-1)-associated myelopathy (HAM)-or tropical spastic paraparesis (TSP)-like symptoms in WKA rats after injection with HTLV-1-producing MT-2 cells, while no symptoms were observed in F344 rats injected with MT-2 cells or in control WKA rats. Five of the eight (63%) WKA rats injected with MT-2 cells showed HAM/TSP-like paraparesis at 105 weeks of age, but none of seven MT-2-injected F344 rats or eight control WKA rats showed symptoms. This high incidence of HAM/TSP-like symptoms in WKA rats was statistically

Human T cell leukemia virus type 1 (HTLV-1) is the first human oncogenic retrovirus to be discovered and causes two major diseases: a progressive neuro-inflammatory disease, termed HTLV-1 associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP), and an aggressive malignancy of T lymphocytes known as adult T cell leukemia (ATL). Innate and acquired immune responses play pivotal roles in controlling the status of HTLV-1-infected cells and such, the outcome of HTLV-1 infection. Natural killer cells (NKCs) are the effector cells of the innate immune system and are involved in controlling viral

Human T-cell leukemia virus type 1 (HTLV-1) was the first retrovirus shown to cause human disease, such as adult T-cell leukemia and HTLV-1 associated myelopathy/tropic spastic paraparesis. HTLV-1 mainly infects CD4 T cells and deregulates their differentiation, function and homeostasis, which should contribute to the pathogenesis of HTLV-1, for example, inducing transformation of infected CD4 T cells and chronic inflammatory diseases. Therefore, not only virological approach but also immunological approach regarding CD4 T cells are required to understand how HTLV-1 causes related human diseas

HTLV-1 (human T-lymphotropic virus type 1) is associated with tropical spastic paraparesis, adult T-cell lymphoma (ATL), and also with opportunistic infections. The risk for developing ATL in HTLV-1 healthy carriers is low, between 1 and 4%. Nothing is known about the events promoting the evolution from the healthy carrier state to symptomatic ATL. We describe the case of a 44-year-old French Caribbean man with a chronic and recurrent strongyloidiasis in which the occurrence of a hemorrhagic and necrotic varicella led to the discovery of an infection by HTLV-1 and an acute form of ATL. All hem

Human T cell leukemia virus types 1 and 2 (HTLV-1 and HTLV-2) are genetically related complex retroviruses that are capable of immortalizing human T-cells in vitro and establish life-long persistent infections in vivo. In spite of these apparent similarities, HTLV-1 and HTLV-2 exhibit a significantly different pathogenic potential. HTLV-1 is recognized as the causative agent of adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATLL) and tropical spastic paraparesis/HTLV-1-associated myelopathy (TSP/HAM). In contrast, HTLV-2 has not been causally linked to human malignancy, although it may increase the risk of d

Human T-lymphotrophic virus type I (HTLV-I) is an oncogenic retrovirus and its infection is associated with a variety of human diseases including HTLV-I-associated myelopathy/tropic spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP). Large numbers of epidemiological, virological, immunological, and clinical studies on HTLV-I- and HTLV-I-associated diseases have been published, although the pathogenesis of HAM/TSP remains to be fully understood. In the last several years, researchers have shown that several key factors are important in HTLV-I-associated neurologic disease including high HTLV-I proviral load and a s

Human T-cell leukemia virus type 1 (HTLV-1) was the first retrovirus shown to cause human diseases, such as adult T-cell leukemia (ATL) and HTLV-1 associated myelopathy/tropic spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP). Despite extensive study for three decades, it remains elusive how HTLV-1 induces these diseases. HTLV-1 mainly infects CD4 T cells, inducing dysregulation of the host immune system. Recent studies have uncovered the mechanisms of differentiation and function of CD4 T cells at the cellular and molecular levels, extending our understanding of the pathological conditions associated with HTLV-1
