Sclerosing mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the sublingual gland.

INTRODUCTION: Sclerosing mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the salivary gland is a rare subtype of mucoepidermoid carcinoma. The most common site of sclerosing mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the salivary glands is the parotid gland, followed by the submandibular gland, and the minor salivary glands. OBSERVATION: Here we report the first case of sclerosing mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the sublingual gland. DISCUSSION: Clinicians should consider sclerosing mucoepidermoid carcinoma in the differential diagnosis of salivary gland neoplasm. Surgical excision with clear margins seems to be a sufficient init

Malignant myoepithelioma of palate.

Malignant myoepithelioma is a rare salivary gland neoplasm, which accounts for less than 2% of all the salivary gland carcinomas. Majority of cases have been reported in parotid, and only 8 cases of involvement of the hard palate have been reported in the literature so far. Hereby, a case of painless, ulcerated palatal mass of 2 years of duration reported. A diagnosis of malignant plasmacytoid myoepithelioma was made with the aid of immunohistochemical analysis, and wide surgical excision was considered keeping in mind the biological behavior of the tumor.

Chronic sclerosing sialadenitis of the submandibular and parotid glands: a report of a case and review of the literature.

Chronic sclerosing sialadenitis (also known as Küttner tumor) is a chronic inflammatory condition of the salivary glands, first described by Küttner in 1896. Clinically, the disease cannot be distinguished from a true neoplasm. The submandibular gland is affected more commonly than any other salivary gland. This report is of a case of widespread swelling of the salivary glands in which histologic features of chronic sclerosing sialadenitis were seen in the submandibular and parotid glands. The etiology, pathogenesis, and differential diagnosis of this disease and the clinical outcome of this c

Temporomandibular joint dysfunction and facial pain caused by neoplasms. Report of three cases.

The most frequent causes of painful limitation of temporomandibular joint function are myofascial pain dysfunction or anterior disk displacement. A potential problem in dealing with those patients is the risk of misdiagnosing the rare patient who has a neoplastic disease, primary or metastatic to the epipharyngeal region, parotid gland, jaws, or temporomandibular joint. Three cases are presented in which progressively worsening limitation of mandibular movement and increasing pain led to the diagnosis of a neoplasm in the temporomandibular joint region. The article illustrates the necessity of

Composite Epstein-Barr virus-positive mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma and Epstein-Barr virus-negative diffuse large B-cell lymphoma in the parotid salivary gland of a patient with Sjögren's syndrome and rheumatoid arthritis: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Epstein-Barr virus is associated with many human hematopoietic neoplasms; however, Epstein-Barr virus-positive mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma is extremely rare. In routine clinical practice, detection of mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma and diffuse large B-cell lymphoma in a tissue sample presumes a clonal relation between these neoplasms and that diffuse large B-cell lymphoma developed by transformation of the mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma. However, evidence to support this presumption is sparse and controversial. Assessment of the clonal relatio

Parotid gland tumor computed tomography image segmentation and benign-malignant differentiation diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: Parotid gland tumors are the most common type of salivary gland neoplasms. The accurate determination of tumor nature is essential for clinical treatment decision-making. Existing deep learning (DL)-based methods for image segmentation and differential diagnosis often yield blurred boundaries when segmenting parotid tumors on computed tomography (CT) images and face difficulties in distinguishing benign from malignant lesions. This study aimed to develop a solution based on an improved TransUNet to achieve precise tumor segmentation and to enable automatic benign-malignant differen

Cystic lesion in parotid region: an unexpected diagnosis.

Benign tumours of salivary glands represent 2%-3% of all tumours and parotid gland is most often affected. Keratocystoma is a rare benign tumour with multilocular cystic lesions filled with keratin materials. Histologically, it is characterised by solid epithelium islands containing keratinised lamellae with multicystic spaces. We report a case of a woman in her mid-70s with painless mass in her left parotid gland which increased in size over 1 year. Ultrasound scan revealed a 38×20 mm diameter hypoanechoic mass. Neck CT with contrast medium and fine needle aspiration were performed with diagn

SMAS flap for extracapsular dissection of parotid gland tumors: is it necessary?

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this retrospective article is to evaluate postoperative outcomes after extracapsular dissection for small benign superficial parotid neoplasms (<3 cm) in patients who received Superficial Musculoaponeurotic System (SMAS) flap and in patients who did not receive it. METHODS: Two groups were created and statistically compared regarding Frey's syndrome and aesthetic satisfaction by data collected through the POI-8 validated questionnaire and through an aesthetic satisfaction scale ranging from 1 to 10. The difference between these two groups was the utilization of SMAS flap…

Post atrial septal defect closure pulmonary hypertension crisis.

The standard surgical procedure for treating the parotid gland's recurrent pleomorphic adenoma (RPA) is parotidectomy with facial nerve preservation (FN). Treatment of RPA remains challenging since controversies occur regarding recurrence, degree of revision surgery, postoperative radiation, and difficulty in conserving the FN. A retrospective review of patient's medical records treated for benign parotid neoplasms was conducted between 2017 and 2022 to identify individuals who underwent surgery for RPA. Demographic information, surgical intervention details, pre-and postoperative facial nerve…

Long-term follow-up of over 1000 patients with salivary gland tumours treated in a single centre.

Between 1947 and 1992, 1403 patients with 1432 salivary gland tumours were treated at the Christie Hospital, Manchester. There were 1194 epithelial neoplasms: parotid, 1082 (91 per cent); submandibular, 47 (4 per cent); minor glands, 65 (5 per cent). The commonest histological diagnoses were pleomorphic adenoma (n = 776) and adenolymphoma (n = 159). A total of 244 carcinomas were seen (adenoid cystic carcinoma, n = 75). Treatment was primarily surgical, conservative where possible, and determined by tumour extent and not histology. Adjuvant radiation therapy was used in over half the definitiv

Synchronous occurrence of oral squamous cell carcinoma and Warthin's tumor: systematic review and case report.

We systematically reviewed the literature on the co-occurrence of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and Warthin's tumor (WT), thought to be quite rare, to help reduce misdiagnosis and improve treatment planning. For this systematic review, we searched for articles in the Web of Science and PubMed databases, analyzed relevant studies for forward and backward citations, and identified only articles reporting on the "co-occurrence" of WT and SCC. Of the 237 studies identified, 12 comprising 18 patients met the inclusion criteria, to which we added one study from our institution. Most WTs were associa

Multiple malignant salivary gland neoplasms: mucoepidermoid carcinoma of palate and adenoid cystic carcinoma of floor of mouth.

Salivary gland tumors usually occur as single lesions. To have more than one tumor is unusual. We report a case of an adult male who presented with a mucoepidermoid carcinoma involving the minor salivary glands of the palate at age 57 years, followed by an adenoid cystic carcinoma of the floor of mouth at age 63 years. The patient later succumbed to non-Hodgkin lymphoma at age 72 years. There are 31 acceptable cases of multiple malignant salivary gland neoplasms reported in the world literature. Multiple malignant tumors of the same histologic type are more common than those of different histo

Metastasizing pleomorphic adenoma: a fascinating enigma.

Among salivary gland neoplasms, metastasizing pleomorphic adenoma (MPA) constitutes an extremely rare group of tumors. The present paper reports a case of pleomorphic adenoma (PA) in submandibular gland that, after more than 30 years of initial treatment, recurred and metastasized to ipsilateral neck lymph nodes and parotid gland. In an attempt to elucidate the malignant behavior of metastasizing pleomorphic adenoma, we performed Ki-67, p53, p16, and bcl-2 immunohistochemistry staining of our case sample. Many immunohistochemistry staining studies have been done on malignant salivary gland tum

Branchial cyst of the parapharyngeal space: report of a case and surgical approach considerations.

INTRODUCTION: Neoplasms arising within the parapharyngeal space are rare and represent approximately 0.5% of all head and neck tumors. The majority of these lesions consist of minor salivary gland tumors, tumors of the deep lobe of the parotid gland, and tumors of neurogenic origin (paragangliomi and schwannomi), while branchial cysts are extremely rare. Despite advances in radiographic images, surgical excision remains the definitive technique for the diagnosis of parapharyngeal space tumors. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: The authors report a case of branchial cyst of the parapharyngeal space exci

Central Pleomorphic Adenoma of Mandible Mimicking Ameloblastoma - A Rare Case Report.

Salivary gland neoplasms account for 3% of all head and neck tumours. Pleomorphic adenoma (PA) is the most common salivary gland tumour that mainly occurs in the parotid gland, followed by minor salivary glands of the oral cavity, however, the occurrence of PA inside the jaw bones is exceedingly rare and very few cases have been reported in the literature. Inside jaw bones these lesions tend to imitate large osteolytic lesions encompass a diagnostic challenge. An exhaustive review of the literature revealed only 10 cases of central pleomorphic adenoma. We present a rare case of primary PA that

Current Developments in Diagnosis of Salivary Gland Tumors: From Structure to Artificial Intelligence.

Salivary glands tumors are uncommon neoplasms with variable incidence, heterogenous histologies and unpredictable biological behaviour. Most tumors are located in the parotid gland. Benign salivary tumors represent 54-79% of cases and pleomorphic adenoma is frequently diagnosed in this group. Salivary glands malignant tumors that are more commonly diagnosed are adenoid cystic carcinomas and mucoepidermoid carcinomas. Because of their diversity and overlapping features, these tumors require complex methods of evaluation. Diagnostic procedures include imaging techniques combined with clinical ex

Pleomorphic adenoma in tonsil.

Salivary tumors that involve the tonsil are rare, representing 0.5% of salivary neoplasms. Most tumors arise from the parotid glands. Rare studies have been reported in the literature regarding pleomorphic adenomas affecting the tonsil. Patients are usually asymptomatic and present with a slow-growing, mobile and painless mass. Radiological examinations are usually unable to differentiate benign from malignant tumors in most cases. There is low recurrence with complete excision of the tumor. The prognosis is excellent except in the rare cases of malignant transformation. This report describes

Pleomorphic adenoma of submandibular gland: A case report with review of literature.

Neoplasms that arise in the salivary glands are relatively rare, yet they represent a wide variety of both benign and malignant histologic subtypes. Approximately 70% of the salivary gland tumors affect parotid gland with the submandibular gland being affected in 5-10% of the cases, sublingual gland in 1% and minor glands in 5-15% of the cases. Submandibular gland tumors are relatively rare and very few studies have been reported in the literature that is exclusively conducted on tumors affecting submandibular gland. In this paper, we describe a case of pleomorphic adenoma affecting submandibu

Cholesterol granuloma: a rare benign rib tumor.

Rib tumors are uncommon, constituting only 5% to 10% of all bony neoplasms. Cholesterol granuloma is also rare and is described as inflammatory granulation that occurs in response to the deposition of cholesterol crystals. Cholesterol granulomas are found most commonly in the paranasal sinuses or temporal bones, but there are also rare reports of their occurrence in the peritoneum, parotid gland, lymph nodes, thyroglossal duct, kidney, liver, and spleen. Involvement of the ribs has rarely been described previously. We report a rare case of cholesterol granuloma involving the second rib of a 38
