Sibling incest resulting in pregnancy: A forensic case study of paternal neglect and pornographic exposure.

This case report presents a rare incident of sibling incest resulting in pregnancy, occurring within a context of paternal neglect and inadequate parental supervision. A 14-year-old boy, after unsupervised exposure to pornographic content on his father's mobile device, engaged in sexual intercourse with his 15-year-old sister. The case highlights the psychological and developmental risks posed by early and unregulated access to sexually explicit material. It also underscores the diagnostic, ethical, and legal challenges in the detection and forensic evaluation of intrafamilial sexual abuse. Th

Nutrition-Based Paternal Influence on Gynecological Diseases in Female Offspring via Epigenetic Mechanisms.

Studies have widely indicated that the composition of maternal nutrition and diets might affect offspring health later in life. Studies on paternal contribution to the offspring's disease are relatively scarce but are an important subject to the field. Recent research has suggested that paternal factors influenced by nutrition have been implicated in the transgenerational heritage of health and diseases through epigenetic mechanisms. This review aims to explore the current state of knowledge on nutrition-based paternal impacts on gynecological disease through epigenetics, focusing on the trans

Effects of paternal arachidonic acid supplementation on offspring behavior and hypothalamus inflammation markers in the mouse.

Arachidonic acid (AA) is involved in inflammation and plays a role in growth and brain development in infants. We previously showed that exposure of mouse sires to AA for three consecutive generations induces a cumulative change in fatty acid (FA) involved in inflammation and an increase in body and liver weight in the offspring. Here, we tested the hypothesis that paternal AA exposure changes the progeny's behavioral response to a proinflammatory insult, and asked whether tissue-specific FA are associated with that response. Male BALB/c mice were supplemented daily with three doses of AA for

Paternal and maternal psychological distress and adolescent health risk behaviors: The role of sensitive periods.

INTRODUCTION: Adolescent health risk behaviors are linked to poor physical and mental health outcomes. While past research shows that maternal psychological distress predicts those behaviors, we know less about the role of paternal psychological distress and the role of sensitive periods. METHODS: Using 11,128 data from families (50.5% female children) from the UK's Millennium Cohort Study, we examined the role of timing of exposure to paternal and maternal psychological distress in engagement in health risk behaviors (smoking, alcohol use, binge drinking, and sexual activity) at age 14. Support for the Supporter: Paternal Postpartum Loneliness and Social Support During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

During the postpartum period, fathers may be at risk of increased stress and loneliness, which may be offset or buffered by the provision of social support. This study aimed to explore fathers' postpartum experiences of loneliness, perceived stress, and social support. A constructivist grounded theory approach was used to inform study design and analysis. Semistructured interviews were conducted to collect data from 12 fathers, living in the Republic of Ireland, who had an infant aged 6 months or younger. A grounded theory entitled "support for the supporter," describing fathers' experiences w

Persisting neurobehavioral consequences of daily or intermittent paternal cannabis administration in F1 and F2 Rats.

Repeated paternal preconception exposure to Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ9-THC) alone or together with the other constituents in a cannabis extract has been shown in our earlier studies in rats to cause significant neurobehavioral impairment in their offspring. In the current study, we compared the effects of daily cannabis extract (CE) exposure to cannabis on two consecutive days per week, modeling weekend cannabis use in human. The CE contained Δ9-THC as well as cannabidiol and cannabinol. We also extended the investigation of the study to cross-generational effects of grand-paternal cannabis e

Adults with paternal UPD14 causing Kagami-Ogata syndrome: Case report and review of the literature.

Kagami-Ogata syndrome (KOS) is a clinically recognizable syndrome in the neonatal period. It is characterized by specific skeletal anomalies and facial dysmorphisms. It is typically caused by paternal uniparental disomy of chromosome 14, while epimutations and microdeletions are less commonly reported causes. In the pediatric setting, KOS is a well delineated syndrome. However, there is a dearth of literature describing the natural history of the condition in adults. Herein, we describe a 35-year-old man, the first adult with KOS reported due to paternal uniparental disomy 14, and review repor

Maternal and Paternal Preconception Serum Concentrations of Per and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances in Relation to Birth Outcomes.

Prenatal per and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) exposure is associated with adverse birth outcomes. There is an absence of evidence on the relationship between maternal and paternal preconception PFAS exposure and birth outcomes. This study included 312 mothers and 145 fathers with a singleton live birth from a preconception cohort of subfertile couples seeking fertility treatment at a U.S. clinic. PFAS were quantified in serum samples collected before conception. Gestational age (GA) and birthweight (BW) were abstracted from delivery records. We also assessed low birthweight (BW < 2500 g)

Novel 14q32.2 paternal deletion encompassing the whole DLK1 gene associated with Temple syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Temple syndrome (TS14) is a rare imprinting disorder caused by maternal UPD14, imprinting defects or paternal microdeletions which lead to an increase in the maternal expressed genes and a silencing the paternally expressed genes in the 14q32 imprinted domain. Classical TS14 phenotypic features include pre- and postnatal short stature, small hands and feet, muscular hypotonia, motor delay, feeding difficulties, weight gain, premature puberty along and precocious puberty. METHODS: An exon array comparative genomic hybridization was performed on a patient affected by psychomotor and

Wilms tumour resulting from paternal transmission of a TRIM28 pathogenic variant-A first report.

Wilms tumour (nephroblastoma) is a renal embryonal tumour that is frequently caused by constitutional variants in a small range of cancer predisposition genes. TRIM28 has recently been identified as one such gene. Previously, observational data strongly suggested a parent of origin effect, whereby Wilms tumour only occurred following maternal inheritance of a pathogenic genetic variant. However, here we report a child with bilateral Wilms tumour who had inherited a pathogenic TRIM28 variant from their father. This finding suggests that genetic counselling for paternally inherited pathogenic va

Paternal and maternal birthweight and offspring risk of macrosomia at term gestations: A nationwide population study.

BACKGROUND: There is a paucity of data on whether parents' macrosomia (birthweight ≥4500 g) status influences the risk of macrosomia in the offspring. The role of maternal overweight in the generational effect of macrosomia is not known. OBJECTIVE: To estimate the risk of macrosomia by parental birthweight at term and evaluate if this risk varied with maternal body mass index (BMI, kg/m2) early in pregnancy. METHODS: We used data from the Medical Birth Registry of Norway on all singleton term births (37-42 gestational weeks) during 1967-2017. The primary exposure was parental macrosomia, and

Paternal age, risk of congenital anomalies, and birth outcomes: a population-based cohort study.

The objective of the study was to explore the impact of paternal age on the risk of congenital anomalies and birth outcomes in infants born in the USA between 2016 and 2021. This retrospective cohort study used data from the National Vital Statistics System (NVSS) database, a data set containing information on live birth in the USA between 2016 and 2021. Newborns were divided into four groups based on their paternal age (< 25, 25-34, 35-44, and > 44 years) and using the 25-34 age group as a reference. The primary outcomes were congenital anomalies involving structural anomalies and chromosome

Paternal occupational exposures and infant congenital heart defects in the Japan Environment and Children's Study.

BACKGROUND: Few prospective studies have investigated the association between paternal occupational exposures and risk of infant congenital heart defects (CHDs). We investigated the associations between paternal occupational exposures, frequency of use, and concurrent or sequential exposure to a mixture of compounds and the risk of infant CHDs. METHODS: Our study examined 28,866 participants in the Japan Environment and Children's Study. Logistic regression analysis was used to estimate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) associated with paternal occupational exposures during

Impact of paternal age on assisted reproductive technology outcomes and offspring health: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: The increase in paternal age and the percentage of births after assisted reproductive technologies (ART) may have consequences on offspring and society's position regarding access to ART must be questioned. Most countries recommend limiting ART to men under 60 years. What is the rationale for this threshold? OBJECTIVE: This systematic review assesses scientific arguments to establish links between paternal age, male fertility, and offspring health. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Using the PRISMA guidelines, this systematic review of the literature analyzed 111 articles selected after scre

Empirical Evidence on Enhanced Mutation Rates of 19 RM-YSTRs for Differentiating Paternal Lineages.

Rapidly mutating Y-chromosomal short tandem repeats (RM Y STRs) with mutation rates ≥ 10-2 per locus per generation are valuable for differentiating amongst male paternal relatives where standard Y STRs with mutation rates of ≤10-3 per locus per generation may not. Although the 13 RM Y STRs commonly found in commercial assays provide higher levels of paternal lineage differentiation than conventional Y STRs, there are many male paternal relatives that still cannot be differentiated. This can be improved by increasing the number of Y STRs or choosing those with high mutation rates. We present a

Paternal nicotine taking elicits heritable sex-specific phenotypes that are mediated by hippocampal Satb2.

Nicotine intake, whether through tobacco smoking or e-cigarettes, remains a global health concern. An emerging preclinical literature indicates that parental nicotine exposure produces behavioral, physiological, and molecular changes in subsequent generations. However, the heritable effects of voluntary parental nicotine taking are unknown. Here, we show increased acquisition of nicotine taking in male and female offspring of sires that self-administered nicotine. In contrast, self-administration of sucrose and cocaine were unaltered in male and female offspring suggesting that the intergenera

Maternal and Paternal Representations in Assisted Reproductive Technology and Spontaneous Conceiving Parents: A Longitudinal Study.

Aim of this study was to investigate whether parental mental representations during pregnancy and after delivery differed between parents who conceived after Assisted Reproductive Treatments (ART) and spontaneous conceiving (SC) parents. Effects of specific ART variables (previous ART attempts, treatment type and cause of infertility) were also taken into account. Seventeen ART couples and 25 SC couples were recruited at Santa Maria Nuova Hospital (Reggio Emilia, Italy). At both 32 weeks of gestation (T1) and 3 months postpartum (T2) participants completed the Semantic Differential of the IRMA

Genetic dissection identifies Necdin as a driver gene in a mouse model of paternal 15q duplications.

Maternally inherited duplication of chromosome 15q11-q13 (Dup15q) is a pathogenic copy number variation (CNV) associated with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Recently, paternally derived duplication has also been shown to contribute to the development of ASD. The molecular mechanism underlying paternal Dup15q remains unclear. Here, we conduct genetic and overexpression-based screening and identify Necdin (Ndn) as a driver gene for paternal Dup15q resulting in the development of ASD-like phenotypes in mice. An excess amount of Ndn results in enhanced spine formation and density as well as hyper

Against the Odds: A Structural Equation Analysis of Family Resilience Processes during Paternal Incarceration.

On any given day, approximately 2.1 million children in Europe have an incarcerated parent. Although research indicates that material hardship is associated with parental incarceration, and particularly paternal incarceration, little is known about family processes that may mitigate the harmful effects of such hardship on children with an incarcerated parent. Guided by a resilience framework, this study examined how family processes mediate the effects of material hardship on youth academic adjustment within the context of paternal incarceration. Using Danish data that assessed key family cons
