Ewing sarcoma, a highly aggressive round-cell neoplasm of unknown origin, rarely occurs as a primary cardiac tumor. In this intriguing case, we describe an instance of primary Ewing sarcoma in an adult patient's right ventricle (RV). The patient, a 27-year-old man, presented with symptoms including epigastric pain, fever, tachycardia, nausea, vomiting, shortness of breath, and a dry cough. Imaging studies, including a computed tomography scan and echocardiogram, revealed an anterior mediastinal mass arising from the free wall of the RV and extending into the pericardium. The mass exerted press

BACKGROUND: Patients undergoing surgery deserve the best possible peri-operative outcomes. Each stage of the peri-operative patient journey offers opportunities to improve care delivery, with shorter lengths of stay, less complications, reduced costs and better value.
METHODS: These opportunities were identified through narrative review of the literature, with consultation and consensus at the hidden pandemic (of postoperative complications) summit 2, July 2023 in Adelaide, Australia RESULTS: Before surgery: Some patients who receive timely alternative treatments may not need surgery at all.

BACKGROUND: Right ventricular dysfunction (RVD) is an important prognostic factor in several cardiac conditions, including acute and chronic heart failure. The impact of baseline RVD on clinical outcomes of patients undergoing high-risk percutaneous coronary intervention (HRPCI) supported by Impella is unknown.
METHODS: Patients from the single-arm, multicenter PROTECT III study of Impella-supported HRPCI were stratified based on the presence or absence of RVD. RVD was quantitatively assessed by an echocardiography core laboratory and was defined as fractional area change < 35%, tricuspid ann

AIMS: To investigate the prognostic value of the right ventricle-to-pulmonary artery (RV-PA) coupling in patients with either transthyretin (ATTR) or immunoglobulin light-chain (AL) cardiac amyloidosis (CA).
METHODS AND RESULTS: Overall, 283 patients with CA from 3 Italian high-volume centres were included (median age 76 years; 63% males; 53% with ATTR-CA, 47% with AL-CA). The RV-PA coupling was evaluated by using the tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion/pulmonary artery systolic pressure (TAPSE/PASP) ratio. The median value of TAPSE/PASP was 0.45 (0.33-0.63) mm/mmHg. Patients with a TA

OBJECTIVE: The development of right ventricular failure has a significant adverse prognostic impact on the course of pulmonary hypertension. Right ventricular energy failure has been shown to double the mortality of pulmonary hypertension even after correction for many established risk predictors. We hypothesize that bendopnea may indicate right ventricular energy failure in patients with pulmonary hypertension.
METHODS: We prospectively enrolled patients with pulmonary hypertension who were admitted to our pulmonary hypertension outpatient clinic between January 2021 and June 2021. Bendopnea

Left renal vein stenting is a preferable therapeutic option for patients with nutcracker syndrome (NS). As a potential complication of stent implantation, stent migration from the original placement to the right ventricle is relatively rare but can seriously threaten the patient's life. Endovascular stent retrieval is the most beneficial procedure for coping with this fatal complication. In this report, we aimed to describe an effective but relatively feasible endovascular approach using the combination of a goose neck snare and a large bore sheath for the retrieval of a stent dislodged in the

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection presents with a wild range of clinical manifestations. Increased inflammatory response and thrombotic risk have been described, being pulmonary embolism a potential cause of death in these patients. Pulmonary embolisms with right ventricle thrombus are rare and have higher mortality rates. This case report concerns a rare clinical presentation of a 75-year-old male with a medical history of right renal transplantation 36 years ago, that presented with a ten-day history of asthenia, followed by fever, shortness of breath, and cough since the day

AIMS: We aim to investigate the prognostic value of a right ventricular (RV) injury score based on the concept of RV dilation, RV systolic dysfunction, and RV-pulmonary arterial (PA) decoupling in septic patients and to explore whether the RV injury (RVI) score can be used to grade the severity of RV dysfunction in these patients.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Septic patients admitted to the ICU were prospectively included. We collected haemodynamic and echocardiographic parameters as well as prognostic information. RV dilation was defined as right and left ventricular end-diastolic area ratio (R/LVED

INTRODUCTION: We describe two patients with right supero-paraseptal accessory pathway (SPAP) who developed left ventricular dysfunction associated with an increased degree of ventricular pre-excitation and frequent orthodromic reciprocating tachycardia (ORT) due to worsening atrioventricular (AV) node conduction.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Case 1: 48-year-old female with a history of normally functioning mechanical mitral valve, CABG, and ventricular pre-excitation that worsened after her open heart surgery. She presented with frequent palpitations with documented supraventricular tachycardia (SVT)

BACKGROUND: Left atrial (LA) remodeling is associated with adverse cardiovascular events, including heart failure (HF) and stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF). However, there are limited data on the value of right atrial (RA) remodeling in this population. We investigated the prognostic role of RA enlargement in patients with non-valvular AF.
METHODS AND RESULTS: We analyzed 254 consecutive patients (age = 69 ± 12years, male:female = 165:89, mean left ventricular ejection fraction = 58.0 ± 7.2%) with non-valvular AF who underwent two-dimensional echocardiography from a single cen

Background Recognition of precapillary pulmonary hypertension (PH) has significant implications for patient management. However, the low a priori chance to find this rare condition in community hospitals may create a barrier against performing a right heart catheterization (RHC). This could result in misclassification of PH and delayed diagnosis/treatment of precapillary PH. Therefore, we investigated patient characteristics and echocardiographic parameters associated with the decision whether to perform an RHC in patients with incident PH in 12 Dutch community hospitals. Methods and Results I

INTRODUCTION: A tracheal bronchus is rarely observed, occurring in only 1% of all patients who undergo thoracic surgeries. We rarely encounter lung cancer in a patient with a tracheal bronchus; however, it is essential to know the distinctive perioperative management strategy for patients with a tracheal bronchus.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a 72-year-old man with lung cancer located in the right apical segment supplied by a tracheal bronchus. Annual chest computed tomography performed as follow-up after colon cancer resection showed an enlarging pulmonary nodule with pure ground-glass opaci

OBJECTIVE: Patients with classic trigeminal neuralgia (CTN) have abnormalities in white matter integrity of the corpus callosum (CC). However, in CTN patients, it is unclear whether the CC substructure region is affected to varying degrees.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 22 patients with CTN and 22 healthy controls (HC) with matching age, gender, and education were selected. All subjects underwent 3.0 T magnetic resonance diffusion tensor imaging and high resolution T1-weighted imaging. The CC was reconstructed by DTI technology, which was divided into three substructure regions: genu, body

A 70-year-old man with back pain presented with a tumor invading the chest wall of his right upper lobe. Three-dimensional computed tomography revealed an aberrant right lower bronchus originating from the left main bronchus. Open thoracotomy right upper lobectomy with combined resection of the chest wall was performed under ventilation for the left and right lower lobes. The aberrant bronchus was defined as a bridging bronchus, a rare congenital anomaly. For such cases, careful planning is necessary to manage ventilation during operation. The area and extent of lymph node dissection are debat

Emerging evidence suggests that novel COVID-19 is associated with increased prothrombotic state and risk of thromboembolic complications, particularly in severe disease. COVID-19 is known to predispose to both venous and arterial thrombotic disease. We describe a case of a 61-year-old woman with history of type II diabetes, hypertension and hyperlipidaemia who presented with dry cough and acute abdominal pain. She was found to have a significantly elevated D-dimer, prompting imaging that showed thrombi in her right ventricle and aorta. She had rapid clinical deterioration and eventually requir
