The paper reports four visual half-field experiments on the recognition of schematic faces whose emotional expression varied. Experiments I and II tested accuracy of recognition in a match-to-sample task. The results confirmed an overall left visual-field superiority in face recognition, but an analysis of a subset of the stimuli indicated that the direction and magnitude of the perceptual asymmetry depend upon the sign of the emotional expression. A replot of the results based on direct scaling of emotional expression (Experiment III) revealed an asymmetry gradient shifting from a left visual

The results of motion-onset visual evoked potentials and pattern-reversal visual evoked potentials were compared in 5 adults with amblyopia, in 13 patients with unilateral retrobulbar neuritis and in 62 patients with multiple sclerosis. While the pattern-reversal visual evoked potentials had reduced amplitudes and prolonged latencies in all amblyopic eyes, the motion-onset visual evoked potentials were normal. Thus, motion-onset visual evoked potentials cannot be used for diagnosis of amblyopia. In patients with retrobulbar neuritis, both types of visual evoked potentials were delayed on stimu

Humans possess a remarkable ability to recognize visual objects with high fidelity, supported by complex neural mechanisms underlying memory retrieval. ERP studies have identified two key neural signatures of recognition memory: the parietal old/new effect and the frontal old/new effect. Despite extensive research on these ERP components, the extent to which these components reflect distinct memory processes remains debated. In the present study, we investigated how repetitive learning modulates these ERP components. Participants repeatedly studied a fixed list of 32 real-world images across u

A fundamental aspect of attention is its spatial scope: whether attention is narrowly focused or more broadly distributed across the visual field. Here, we examined whether the spatial scope of attention is modulated by tonic arousal level. Based on findings that arousal amplifies the selectivity of attention and memory, we hypothesized that arousal would enhance the currently dominant spatial scope of attention (narrow or broad). Participants (N = 39) performed a visual search task designed to measure the breadth of attention. Continuous auditory white noise was presented in half of the block

Recognizing and responding to task-relevant stimuli may be hindered by nearby task-irrelevant flanker stimuli. Such effects occur both in visual crowding and in flanker compatibility effects (FCEs). Whereas crowding is a visual phenomenon that reflects a breakdown of object recognition in clutter, the conflict in the Eriksen flanker task is generally thought to occur during decision-making. In two experiments, we investigated if and how these two seemingly independent phenomena are related. We employed an orientation categorization task that allowed us to concurrently quantify crowding and FCE

Understanding how the brain updates representations of objects amid continuous changes in their features is crucial for constructing accurate internal models of the world. Such changes are typically temporally autocorrelated, referred to here as smooth, meaning the features at one moment are correlated with those at previous and subsequent moments. The attentional drag theory (Callahan-Flintoft et al., 2020) instantiated a computational model of representational updating that is supported by empirical evidence. In the model, attentional engagement that has been allocated to an object is prolon

Spatial structure often provides information about the likely location of targets in visual search tasks and in real life. However, the extent to which spatial structure affects attention when it provides no information about target locations is less well understood. This is investigated here using a visual foraging task, whereby individuals search for many targets amongst many distractors. In six online experiments, participants foraged for multiple instances of two target types amongst two distractor types, defined by either features or conjunctions. Experiments comprised a series of manipul

At any given moment, the human visual system encounters a wealth of sensory information that far exceeds the processing capacity of cognitive mechanisms such as visual attention and visual working memory. To overcome these capacity limitations, our visual system uses both ensemble perception and selective attention to navigate our visual environment. The goal of the current study is to explore potential interactions between these two adaptive cognitive processes. That is, we investigated whether spatial attention plays a role in forming ensemble representations. Specifically, we utilized a spa

Inferring object identity from incomplete information is a ubiquitous challenge for the visual system. Here, we study the neural mechanisms underlying processing of minimally recognizable configurations (MIRCs) and their subparts, which are unrecognizable (sub-MIRCs). MIRCs and sub-MIRCs are very similar at the pixel level, yet they lead to a dramatic gap in recognition performance. To evaluate how the brain processes such images, we invasively record human neurophysiological responses. Correct identification of MIRCs is associated with a dynamic interplay of feedback and feedforward mechanism

Objects are recognized in three hierarchical levels: superordinate, mid-level, and subordinate. Psychophysics shows that mid-level categories and low spatial frequency (LSF) information are rapidly recognized. However, the interaction between spatial frequency (SF) and abstraction is not well understood. To address this, we examine neural responses in the inferior temporal cortex and superior temporal sulcus of two male macaque monkeys. Our findings reveal that mid-level categories are well represented at both LSF and high SF (HSF), suggesting robust mid-level boundary maps in these areas, una

Evidence suggested that stimulus-response bindings could occur automatically as a result of the co-occurrence of a stimulus and a response, without requiring additional attentional involvement for features or objects. Considering that stimuli used in previous research often involved high-discriminability features processed automatically, the current study investigated the role of feature types in attention-modulated stimulus-response binding. Using the classic partial repetition cost (PRC) paradigm, the study manipulated the task relevance of features during the binding phase to modulate featu

BACKGROUND: Previous studies suggested that children with reading difficulty have impaired statistical learning ability in extracting distributional orthographic regularities. However, the neural mechanisms underlying have not been fully investigated.
AIMS: The current study aimed to identify the electrophysiological markers and to examine the neural underpinnings of statistical learning of orthographic regularities in children with reading difficulties.
METHODS AND PROCEDURES: Using the event-related potentials (ERPs) and the orthographic learning task, 157 children were exposed to a sequen

In primates, faces and bodies activate distinct regions in the inferior temporal (IT) cortex and are typically studied separately. Yet, primates interact with whole agents and not with random concatenations of faces and bodies. Despite its social importance, it is still poorly understood how faces and bodies interact in IT. Here, we addressed this gap by measuring fMRI activations to whole agents and to unnatural face-body configurations in which the head was mislocated with respect to the body, and examined how these relate to the sum of the activations to their corresponding faces and bodies

We compared the performance of dyslexic and typical readers on two perceptual tasks, the Vanderbilt Holistic Face Processing Task and the Holistic Word Processing Task. Both yield a metric of holistic processing that captures the extent to which participants automatically attend to information that is spatially nearby but irrelevant to the task at hand. Our results show, for the first time, that holistic processing of faces is comparable in dyslexic and typical readers but that dyslexic readers show greater holistic processing of words. Remarkably, we show that these metrics predict the perfor

Extensive research has shown that practice yields highly specific perceptual learning of simple visual properties such as orientation and contrast. Does this same learning characterize more complex perceptual skills? Here we investigated perceptual learning of complex medical images. Novices underwent training over four sessions to discriminate which of two chest radiographs contained a tumor and to indicate the location of the tumor. In training, one group received six repetitions of 30 normal/abnormal images, the other three repetitions of 60 normal/abnormal images. Groups were then tested o

Recent research on visual object recognition has suggested that the right hemisphere can engage either holistic or part-based processing depending on whether the recognition relies on configural (exact distances among features) or featural information, respectively. Consistent with this finding, expert Chinese reading has been marked by a left-side bias (an indication of right-hemisphere lateralization) with decreased holistic processing (as assessed using the composite paradigm) due to its reliance on featural information. Here we examine two common perceptual expertise phenomena in object re

Many important situations require human observers to simultaneously search for more than one object. Despite a long history of research into visual search, the behavioral and neural mechanisms associated with multiple-target search are poorly understood. Here we test the novel theory that the efficiency of looking for multiple targets critically depends on the mode of cognitive control the environment affords to the observer. We used an innovative combination of electroencephalogram (EEG) and eye tracking while participants searched for two targets, within two different contexts: either both t

This study investigated the effects of declined accommodation on reading performance in non-native and native languages. Eighteen native Japanese speakers participated: eight presbyopes and ten non-presbyopes. In the experiment, participants were asked to scan, or sequentially read six-word items presented in two-line texts, identify a non-word target as quickly as possible, and indicate its location. In addition to the participant type (presbyopes/non-presbyopes) and language of the reading material (Japanese/English), viewing distance (35 cm/70 cm) and contrast (18%/100%) were manipulated. T

If a target stimulus is presented together with a response-irrelevant distractor stimulus, both stimuli can be encoded together with the response in an event file (see Hommel, 2004). The repetition of any feature of such an event-file can then retrieve the previously encoded response. This kind of feature-based retrieval is an important mechanism in action control. Typically, a direct link between perception and action is assumed, whereas the possible role of semantics is unspecified so far. Only a couple of previous studies analyzed whether the repetition of semantic features can elicit event
