BACKGROUND: Operative hip reductions for infantile DDH are traditionally performed under general anesthesia (GA). This introduces potential safety concerns, as risks related to GA are highest in children below 1 year. While surgery can be temporarily delayed to reduce these risks, this decreases the chances of a successful reduction via closed methods alone and also compromises valuable remodeling potential. This pilot study sought to evaluate the safety and efficacy of spinal anesthesia (SA) in infants undergoing operative hip reduction.
METHODS: This is a multicenter, retrospective cohort s

OBJECTIVES: To explore the effect of parental presence on the recovery period of paediatric patients undergoing general anaesthesia for snoring surgery.
METHODS: Forty-two paediatric patients who underwent snoring surgery were randomly divided into control and observation groups. The control group received routine nursing intervention, while the observation group allowed either the father or mother to enter the recovery room immediately after the child was awake and extubated, in addition to the routine nursing intervention.
RESULTS: Paediatric anaesthesia emergence delirium score during the

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Regional anaesthesia has well established benefits in paediatric perioperative care and acute pain interventions. This article explores current controversies and emerging evidence in paediatric regional anaesthesia.
RECENT FINDINGS: Despite rates of local anaesthetic systemic toxicity (LAST) remaining low, dosing of local anaesthetics in children remains controversial, particularly in neonates, in whom maximum safe doses can easily be exceeded. Local anaesthetic additives, such as dexamethasone, dexmedetomidine, and clonidine, are commonly used to prolong regional anaesthes

OBJECTIVE: To explore our experience of anesthetic management for pediatric congenital laryngomalacia operation.
METHODS: A total of 27 pediatric patients with congenital laryngomalacia were treated at our hospital between December 2010 and November 2012. All patients were anesthetized by intravenous anesthesia of propofol-remifentanil and spontaneous breathing. Oxygen was insufflated at a rate of 4 L/min through an endotracheal tube near glottis. Propofol was set at a constant rate of 100 µg · kg(-1) · min(-1). The initial dose of remifentanil at 0.05 µg·kg(-1)·min(-1) was adjusted in 0.05 µ

Upright positioning is re-emerging as a potential strategy to improve the pediatric radiotherapy experience, particularly for selected children in whom distress, limited cooperation, or repeated general anesthesia represent major barriers to treatment. This practice development report, produced by the Upright Radiotherapy Pediatric Task Group - an international, multiprofessional group bringing together radiation oncology, medical physics, radiation therapy, pediatric anesthesia and industry expertise - reviews the historical rationale, contemporary technological developments, and clinical req…

Concerns persist regarding the potential long-term effects of general anaesthesia on brain development in children. This narrative review summarises recent preclinical and clinical evidence (2019-25) and updates consensus messages. Preclinical studies show that commonly used anaesthetic agents can interfere with neurodevelopmental processes during vulnerable developmental periods. Clinical evidence is less clear. Randomised trials indicate that a single, short exposure in infancy is not associated with measurable impairment in cognitive outcomes, whereas observational studies report mixed find

PURPOSE: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is routinely used to assess extent of resection after pediatric brain and spine tumor surgery and is commonly performed intraoperatively (ioMRI) or postoperatively (postopMRI). This study describes the implementation, feasibility, and workflow characteristics of end-of-surgery MRI (eosMRI), performed after wound closure but before termination of general anesthesia within a single-center pediatric neurosurgical practice and reports procedural and patient-related parameters observed over a 10-year period.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective, single-ce

Sengers Syndrome is an autosomal recessive mitochondrial myopathy caused by mutations of the acylglycerol kinase gene, which leads to an abnormal musculoskeletal and myocardial lipid and glycogen accumulation. It is characterized by congenital cataracts, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, skeletal myopathy and lactic acidosis (especially under stress condition). Therefore, cataract surgery might be indicated. Currently there is no treatment or management formalised for this disease, meaning it is a challenge in clinical practice. We introduce a case of perioperative anaesthetic management on a patie

BACKGROUND: Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) linked to chromosome 5q demonstrates an autosomal recessive inheritance pattern. SMA is characterized by diffuse, symmetric, proximal muscle weakness, with lower limb predominance in the lower limbs than in the upper limbs, and by absent or markedly diminished deep tendon reflexes. The disease incidence ranges 0.005–0.013% among live births. Pediatric anesthesia management in SMA remains scarcely documented. There are scarcely documented of anesthesia management in patients with SMA, particularly among children and adolescents. Given the generalized mu…

Background: General anesthesia is an approach used to address behavior issues in pediatric dentistry. This indication often relies on the practitioner's discretion rather than objective criteria. We developed SCAN-score to assist pediatric dentists in the case of doubt to indicate general anesthesia for uncooperative children. The study aims were to assess the validity of the SCAN-score, which aims to indicate general anesthesia or chairside management for dental care. Methods: A retrospective study was performed on children aged between 2 and 10 years who received dental care. The SCAN-score

Infant spinal anesthesia is a viable alternative to general anesthesia for short procedures below the upper abdomen. It provides a hemodynamically stable anesthetic technique that avoids airway manipulation and associated respiratory complications. Spinal anesthesia allows surgery to be performed without inhaled anesthetic agents or, in certain cases, opioids. This manuscript highlights five preventable perioperative error traps that may occur while performing infant spinal anesthesia with the goal of providing expert clinical guidance for the provision of safe, effective, and efficient spinal

BACKGROUND: External ventricular drainage (EVD) placement is usually performed in the operating room under general anesthesia with endotracheal intubation in pediatric patients with elevated intracranial pressure. Scalp nerve blocks (SNB) with sedation can avoid the safety concerns and complications associated with general anesthesia, such as airway and hemodynamic imbalance. Moreover, SNB can offer a reduced analgesic need when compared with incision-site infiltration. This prospective observational study aimed to compare perioperative outcomes between SNB with sedation and general anesthesia
