The relationship between developmental exposure to adversity and affective disorders is reviewed. Adversity discussed herein includes physical and sexual abuse, neglect, or loss of a caregiver in humans. While these stressors can occur at any point during development, the unique temporal relationship to specific depressive symptoms was the focus of discussion. Further influences of stress exposure during sensitive periods can vary by gender and duration of abuse as well. Data from animal studies are presented to provide greater translational and causal understanding of how sensitive periods, d

BACKGROUND: Non-professional involvement in delivering health and social care support in areas of socio-economic deprivation is considered important in attempting to reduce health inequalities. However, trials of peer mentoring programmes have yielded inconsistent evidence of benefit: difficulties in implementation have contributed to uncertainty regarding their efficacy. We aimed to explore difficulties encountered in conducting a randomised controlled trial of a peer-mentoring programme for first-time mothers in socially disadvantaged areas, in order to provide information relevant to future

The study investigates the interplay between adolescent dating behaviours and HIV perceptions in Chad, where adolescents and young adults (AYA) aged 15-24 years are disproportionately affected. Four focus group discussions (n = 48) were conducted with high school students in N'Djamena, stratified into beneficiaries and non-beneficiaries of a peer education programme. Using a phenomenological approach and the Colaizzi method in ATLAS.ti, we examined lived experiences around relationships, risk behaviours, and prevention strategies. Distinct gender differences emerged in dating motivations: male

BACKGROUND: Prior work suggests girls with earlier subjective pubertal timing (i.e. girls who perceive themselves as maturing earlier than peers) engage in more antisocial behavior (ASB). Theories regarding mechanisms predominantly focus on social/environmental processes, but genetic influences may contribute, particularly given that ASB is heritable, and the stress associated with earlier subjective timing may activate or enhance these genetic vulnerabilities to increase risk. To date, no study has examined these gene × environment interactions (G×E) for ASB and subjective pubertal timing rel

OBJECTIVE: An ongoing issue in the study of adolescent drug use is the impact of family and the peer group on the problem of adolescent substance use. The present study has examined relative effects of these contexts as well as personality variables on drug use outcomes.
METHOD: A test battery measuring various psychological variables was administered to a representative sample of 1652 secondary school students (grades 9 and 11), 876 male (mean age=17,61, SD=0.99) and 789 female (mean age=16.73, SD=1.31). Data about relationship to parents and association with deviant peers were collected, pe

There is emerging evidence that young people with first-episode psychosis are at greater risk of sexually-transmitted infections (STI) than … STI prevention due to increased rates of unprotected sex. Risk-reduction interventions that target peer influence are important. Inquiry into a broader range of psychosocial factors could further our understanding of STI infection risk in early psychosis.

BACKGROUND: Early initiation of breastfeeding after birth is a key behavioral health factor known to decrease neonatal mortality risks. Yet, few demographic studies examined how a community-based intervention impacts postpartum breastfeeding among the socio-economically deprived population in Sub-Saharan Africa. A post-intervention evaluation was conducted in 2011 to measure the effect of a UNICEF-led behavior change communication program promoting child health care in rural Niger.
METHODS: A quantitative survey is based on a post hoc constitution of two groups of a study sample, exposed and

PURPOSE: Peer support has been suggested as a way to help women diagnosed with breast cancer to better cope with their situation, but studies on its effectiveness have conflicting results. This randomized controlled trial aimed to study the effectiveness of a one-to-one peer support intervention on psychological resilience, social support, and salivary cortisol among breast cancer patients.
METHODS: The sample consisted of 121 newly diagnosed women at Onkologikoa Hospital. Patients who were prescribed chemotherapy were randomly assigned to Intervention Group 1 (IG1) or Control Group 1 (CG1).

BACKGROUND: Structured care pathways (SCPs) consist of treatment algorithms that patients advance through with the goal of achieving remission or response. These SCPs facilitate the application of current evidence and adequate treatment, which potentially benefit patients with mood disorders. The aim of this systematic review was to provide an updated synthesis of SCPs for the treatment of depressive disorders and bipolar disorder (BD).
METHOD: PubMed, PsycINFO, and Embase were searched through June 2022 for peer-reviewed studies examining outcomes of SCPs. Eligibility criteria included being

OBJECTIVE: Callous-unemotional traits (CU) traits are characterized by low empathy, guilt, and reduced sensitivity to others' feelings, along with a reduced drive for social affiliation. However, little is known about the relationships between CU traits and social affiliation in the school context, or the influence of gender on these associations. This study tested reciprocal associations between CU traits and school-based affiliative relationships and explored gender as a potential moderator.
METHOD: The sample included South Korean children aged 10 to 12 years (N = 218, M = 11.03, SD = .65,

PURPOSE: Adolescent suicide ideation (SI) often portends more grievous suicidal behavior; yet, long-term studies of what risk factors predict SI are limited. We employ a multi-wave longitudinal design to investigate the impact of earlier social contexts on change in SI.
METHOD: A community sample of 748 youths drawn from the Children in the Community (CIC) study was first assessed with the CIC Youth SI Scale at mean age 13.7 (range 9-18) (baseline) and in two follow-ups over 10 years. GEE Poisson Regression was used to estimate SI between ages 10 and 25 (intercept set at age midpoint of 17),

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine the specific aspects of early parenting in psychosocially at-risk families most strongly related to children's social-emotional adaptation to school.
METHODS: A cohort study of families (N = 318) identified as at risk for maltreatment of their newborns was conducted. Quality of early parenting was observed in the home when the child was 1 year old. Social-emotional adaptation to school was reported by teachers in first grade. Multivariable models assessed the independent influence of early parenting variables on social-emotional adaptation.

Psychological aspects determining children's behaviour in response to asphyxiation risk due to ingestion of foreign matter have been rarely and non-systematically examined in the literature. Aim of this report is to highlight--through a review of the most significant psychological research in the literature--which factors influence the behaviour, perception and assessments of children 0 to 14 years of age, in a risk situation. In particular, attention is focused on the direct experience of a child at risk, assuming that this experience can play a significant role in future dangerous situations

BACKGROUND: Chronic stress poses an insidious and cumulative threat to adolescent health. Although family and school environments play pivotal roles, previous research has predominantly examined these domains in isolation. The ways in which familial risks and school protective factors interact to influence chronic stress remain underexplored. To address this gap, this study employs network analysis to elucidate the complex interplay between perceived parental conflict, school protective factors, and chronic stress among Chinese adolescents, thereby providing empirical evidence for multidimensi

Children with oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) are at increased risk for developing poor relationships with people around them, but the longitudinal links between ODD symptoms and subsequent interpersonal functioning remain unclear. In the current study, we examined the bidirectional associations between ODD symptoms and children's relationships with parents, peers, and teachers. We included separate analyses for parent vs. teacher reports of ODD symptoms, with regard to subsequent interpersonal relationships. Participants included 256 children with ODD, recruited in China, along with their
