Anxiety, depression, and self-management: a systematic review.

The purpose of this article was to address the clinically relevant question: In the presence of anxiety and/or depression, do patients who have had heart surgery engage in self-management behaviors following hospital discharge? A systematic review of 16 studies that examined the psychological condition of patients who had coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) and/or valvular replacement surgery was conducted. Moderate to severe levels of anxiety and depression exist during the first month of home recovery and appear to have an effect on performance of self-management behaviors. As the influence

Analysis of the neural mechanisms of social anxiety based on EEG features and machine learning and construction of a diagnostic model.

Social anxiety is a common psychological problem, and its accurate diagnosis and investigation of underlying neurophysiological mechanisms are of significant importance. This study aims to explore the neuroelectrophysiological characteristics and diagnostic value of social anxiety by integrating event-related potentials (ERP), event-related spectral perturbation (ERSP), and machine learning methods. A total of 128 participants with varying levels of social anxiety completed an emotional face Go/No-Go task, during which electroencephalographic (EEG) data were collected for ERP and time-frequenc

A comparison of the effects of a beta-adrenergic blocker and a benzodiazepine upon the recognition of human facial expressions.

RATIONALE: Accumulating evidence from neuropsychological and neuroimaging research suggests that facial expressions are processed by at least partially separable neurocognitive systems. Recent evidence implies that the processing of different facial expressions may also be dissociable pharmacologically by GABAergic and noradrenergic compounds, although no study has directly compared the two types of drugs. OBJECTIVE: The present study therefore directly compared the effects of a benzodiazepine with those of a beta-adrenergic blocker on the ability to recognise emotional expressions. METHODS:

Mice transgenic for reduced folate carrier: an animal model of Down syndrome?

In a previous publication we observed aberrant levels of the human reduced folate carrier (hRFC) in cortex from fetal Down syndrome (DS) subjects. Immunoreactivity for hRFC was increased as the only chromosome 21 gene product studied. We, therefore, analyzed mice transgenic for hRFC (TghRFC1) and wild-type (WT) mice for cognitive functions, behavior and in an observational neurological battery (FOB). Cognitive functions were evaluated by the Morris water maze (MWM), the open field (OF) was used for exploratory behavior, locomotor activity and anxiety-related behavior. The elevated plus maze (E

Executive function performance and trauma exposure in a community sample of children.

OBJECTIVE: Though children exposed to familial violence are reported to have difficulties with a range of emotional and behavioral problems (e.g., lower school achievement) that implicate executive function (EF) deficits, relatively little research has specifically examined EF as a function of trauma exposure in children. METHODS: Based on parent report of children's exposure to potentially traumatic events, children (N=110; Age(Mean)=10.39) from an ethnically diverse community sample were compared across three trauma-exposure groups: familial trauma, non-familial trauma, and no trauma. Child

The role of the motor subtypes on the relationship between anxiety and cognitive dysfunctions in Parkinson's disease.

Anxiety is a common neuropsychiatric symptom in Parkinson's disease (PD). Until now, anxiety has been consistently related to cognitive deficits and severity of motor symptoms, whereas the association between anxiety and motor subtypes (TD-PD, tremor dominant and PIGD-PD, postural instability/gait disturbances dominant) revealed contrasting results. The present study aims to investigate the relationship between PD motor subtypes and anxiety and to explore whether the relationship between anxiety and cognitive deficits occurs in a specific PD motor subtype. Consecutive PD outpatients were recru

Personality, Coping Strategies, and Mental Health in High-Performance Athletes During Confinement Derived From the COVID-19 Pandemic.

The COVID-19 outbreak has affected the sports field unprecedentedly. The emergency alert has deprived athletes of training in a suitable environment, as they are faced with cancellations of relevant events in their sports careers. This situation can cause stress levels and other emotional disorders similar to those experienced by athletes during periods of injury. Since the relationship between psychological factors and sports injuries is well-studied, the Global Psychological Model of Sports Injury (MGPLD) is applied to this historical situation for athletes. The purpose of this study was to

Enhanced diagnostics for generalized anxiety disorder: leveraging differential channel and functional connectivity features based on frontal EEG signals.

Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) is a chronic anxiety condition characterized by persistent excessive worry, anxiety, and fear. Current diagnostic practices primarily rely on clinicians' subjective assessments and experience, highlighting a need for more objective and reliable methods. This study collected 10-minute resting-state electroencephalogram (EEG) from 45 GAD patients and 36 healthy controls (HC), focusing on six frontal EEG channels for preprocessing, data segmentation, and frequency band division. Innovatively, this study introduced the "Differential Channel" method, which enhance

Neuroenhancement and mental health in students from four faculties - a cross-sectional questionnaire study.

BACKGROUND: Students face great challenges at the beginning of and during their studies. Competitive experience, exam anxiety, and especially the new performance requirements often cause test anxiety and stressful experiences. The extent of substance use in terms of neuroenhancement (NE) is unclear. Evidence shows associations between NE, increased stress levels, and mental health. OBJECTIVES: We aim to determine the prevalence of NE and alcohol and tobacco use among college students. We also investigate the associations between NE and ADHD, anxiety, depression, and stress experience. METHOD

Psychosocial aspects and temporomandibular disorders in dental students.

OBJECTIVE: Dental students have high levels of anxiety that can affect not only academic performance but also increase the risk for other diseases. It is believed that the increase in the incidence of chronic orofacial pain in temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) may have an impact on the quality of life and general health of subjects. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of TMD in dental students and its association with general health, quality of life, and anxiety. METHOD AND MATERIALS: Ninety students were evaluated by four questionnaires to determine the prevalence and sever

Exposure to activity-based anorexia impairs contextual learning in weight-restored rats without affecting spatial learning, taste, anxiety, or dietary-fat preference.

UNLABELLED: Relapse rates are high amongst cases of anorexia nervosa (AN) suggesting that some alterations induced by AN may remain after weight restoration. OBJECTIVE: To study the consequences of AN without confounds of environmental variability, a rodent model of activity-based anorexia (ABA) can be employed. We hypothesized that exposure to ABA during adolescence may have long-term consequences in taste function, cognition, and anxiety-like behavior after weight restoration. METHODS: To test this hypothesis, we exposed adolescent female rats to ABA (1.5 h food access, combined with volun

Your face scares me: Effects of Perceptual load and Social Anxiety on processing of threatening and neutral faces.

Social Anxiety Disorder is among the most widely studied psychiatric conditions. However, the role of attentional and emotional processes in the maintenance of the condition is still not well-established. This study addressed the impact of individual differences in Social Anxiety, by examining the effects of perceptual load and stimulus valence when processing faces vs objects, here used as distractors, within a letter-search task. In addition to RT and accuracy on the letter search task, heart rate, and skin conductance during the task and participants' self-report emotional evaluation were a

Worry Induction and the Error-Related Negativity.

Generalized anxiety disorder and trait worry have been associated with an enhanced error-related negativity (ERN). However, worry has been linked to cognitive avoidance that reduces negative emotional states, and it is unclear whether state worry enhances or attenuates the ERN. The present study examined the impact of state worry inductions on the ERN. The study involved separate samples of 242 participants (Mage = 19.89) who completed a task-irrelevant worry induction and 255 participants (Mage = 20.07) who completed a task-relevant worry induction. Across both samples, participants completed
