BACKGROUND: This report describes the case of a 51-year-old female who was referred to a periodontist with a tentative diagnosis of complicated furcation defect in the facial aspect of the second permanent molar in the mandibular right quadrant.
METHODS: The clinical examination revealed an asymptomatic tooth without evidence of abnormal attrition, caries, or periodontitis. A closer assessment revealed a large concave lesion located close to the furcation entrance without being obviously connected to it. Periapical radiographs confirmed the presence of a lesion in the hard tissues of the root

This study attempts to evaluate the oral manifestations of and the limited available dental pulp information on diabetes mellitus, a common metabolic disorder of carbohydrate and lipid metabolism affecting over 16 million Americans. Diabetics are particularly prone to bacterial or opportunistic infections. This vulnerability is caused by a generalized circulatory disorder whereby the blood vessels are damaged by the accumulation of atheromatous deposits in the tissues of the blood vessels lumen. In addition, blood vessels, particularly capillaries, develop a thickened basement membrane, which

Periapical pathology indicating endodontic infection, when present in marginal periodontitis-affected teeth, has recently been shown to be an aggravating factor in progression of marginal destruction. This has been associated with patency of dentinal tubules in the tooth cervix, an area normally devoid of cementum following periodontal therapy. These studies are, however hampered by that only circumstantial evidence such as presence of periapical destruction have been applied as criteria of endodontic infection. The purpose of the present investigation was to study to what extent a predefined

Mesenchymal stem cells can be obtained with ease from dental/oral tissue, making them an attractive source of autologous stem cells. They offer a biological solution for restoring damaged dental tissues such as vital pulp engineering, regeneration of periodontal ligament lost in periodontal disease, and for generation of complete or partial tooth structures to form biological implants. Dental mesenchymal stem cells share properties with mesenchymal stem cells from bone marrow and there is a considerable potential for these cells to be used in different stem-cell-based therapies, such as bone a

Specimens of human immature permanent teeth after regenerative endodontic treatment (RET) are sparse. This case report describes the histologic and immunohistochemical findings of tissue formed in the canal space of a human immature permanent tooth with apical periodontitis after RET. A patient presenting with immature human permanent tooth #29 with apical periodontitis underwent RET. At the 10-month follow-up visit, radiographic examination revealed complete resolution of the periapical lesion, marked narrowing of the apical foramen, increased thickness of the canal walls, and minimal lengthe

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate histologically and radiographically the potential of dog's immature roots with apical periodontitis to regenerate after regenerative endodontic treatment using mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) with/without bone morphogenic protein (BMP-2) as scaffolds.
METHODS: In 4 mongrel dogs, 56 immature teeth with 96 roots were infected, resulting in necrotic pulps and periapical pathosis. According to the evaluation time (Group I = 30 days and Group II = 90 days), 90 roots were divided into two equal groups (45 roots each) and 6 roots used to replace any lost root during the

The pulp and periodontium have obvious relationships that have been described in many studies. Pulp infections may affect periodontal tissues and vice versa. Teeth with endo-perio lesions have a worse prognosis than isolated endodontic or periodontal lesions. Elimination of endodontic and periodontal infections is essential for successful treatment, so co-operation between endodontists and periodontists is necessary. In this clinical case, a 44-year-old male presented with primary periodontal disease with secondary endodontic involvement in his lower right canine because of aggressive periodon

BACKGROUND: Chronic periapical lesions (CPLs) are common lesions of the oral cavity and are the result of caries, tooth fracture, iatrogenic causes, or factors causing contamination and pulp necrosis. Inflammatory cells participate in the expansion of CPLs by releasing factors that stimulate or inhibit osteolytic activity. The objective of this study was to investigate the participation of RANKL, TNF-α, cathepsin K, IL-33, and OPG in the development of radicular cysts (RCs) and periapical granulomas (PGs).
METHODS: Paraffin-embedded sections of 30 RCs and 22 PGs were submitted to immunohistoc

Odontogenic keratocyst (OKC), a rare, locally aggressive developmental cyst, is found incidentally on dental radiographs, most commonly in the posterior mandible. When it occurs in the periapical region in association with nonresponding teeth to pulp sensibility tests, it is often misdiagnosed as other endodontic lesions such as radicular cyst, lateral periodontal cyst and dentigerous cyst. This case report describes the rare occurrence of OKC in the anterior mandibular region managed successfully with endodontic treatment and re-interventional surgery in a conservative approach. This case rep

This case report describes the continued root formation following replantation and conventional root canal therapy of a traumatically avulsed open-apex tooth with suppurative apical periodontitis. A 7-year-old male patient had an avulsed upper left central incisor (tooth 21) replanted approximately 50 min after traumatic avulsion. A root canal procedure was initiated due to pulp necrosis and periapical abscess detected in the follow-up period. After endodontic treatment with calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)(2)) dressing, a normal root length developed including an apical segment beyond the hard tissu

BACKGROUND: Eruption sequestrum (ES) is an uncommon condition characterized by irregular calcified tissues on the occlusal surfaces of erupting permanent molars, primarily in children. Despite its rarity, ES has been linked to potential complications, including gingivitis, occlusal trauma, and delayed tooth eruption.
CASE PRESENTATION: This paper reports a multiquadrant ES case affecting the first molars of bilateral maxillary and mandibular arches in a 6-year-old pediatric patient. Intraoral examination revealed small, pale-yellow calcified tissues on the distal occlusal surfaces of the erup

BACKGROUND: Regenerative endodontics has evolved in recent years with tissue engineering concepts in particular appearing promising. Endodontic tissue engineering (ETE) describes the various approaches based on the orthograde introduction of scaffolds or biomaterials (with or without cells) into the root canal to achieve pulp tissue regeneration. There are currently no systematic reviews investigating whether ETE is a suitable method for the treatment of endodontic disease in both mature and immature permanent teeth.
OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this systematic review was to determine the effec

Endodontic microsurgery is a predictable and successful procedure when using techniques that have been developed over the past several years. One of the steps during surgery involves curettage of the entire lesion. However, there are cases in which the lesion has advanced to invade anatomic structures like the nasal fossa, maxillary sinus, mandibular canal, neighboring vital teeth, or through and through to the palate. These lesions make endodontic microsurgery difficult for the operator to execute and have inherent risks to the patient. Selective curettage is a conservative approach to treat

This study describes a clinical case in which a primary maxillary canine with both mobility and root resorption was replaced with an immediately restored dental implant placed into the fresh extraction socket. The implant achieved high primary stability, as determined by resonance frequency analysis, and it was immediately restored with a provisional acrylic resin crown with no centric occlusion. An all-ceramic permanent crown replaced the provisonal crown four months after implant surgery. The implant was stable and no periapical radiolucencies, bleeding on probing, or pathologic probing dept

INTRODUCTION: This study evaluated whether apical periodontitis (AP) in a single tooth or in multiple teeth affected serum levels of inflammatory mediators and influenced blood homeostasis.
METHODS: Thirty male Wistar rats were divided into 3 groups of 10 rats each: control group, healthy rats; 1AP group, rats with AP in 1 tooth; and 4AP group, rats with AP in 4 teeth. After 30 days, the rats were anesthetized, and their blood was collected through cardiac puncture to quantify tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), interferon gamma (IFN-γ), interleukin (IL)-6, IL-17, IL-23, and nitric oxide (NO
