Heart transplants--assessment of dental procedures.

The object of this study was to evaluate the effects of dental foci on survival rates and rejection episodes in heart transplant recipients. Therefore, in a retrospective longitudinal study we studied 74 heart transplant recipients at the Department of Maxillofacial Surgery and Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, University of Münster. Study patients were divided into groups: those in which dental foci had been verified (n = 31) and those without dental foci (n = 43). Statistical analysis was performed using the chi-square test, Kaplan-Meier life table analysis, and the log-rank

Bedside ultrasound of the soft tissue of the face: a case of early Ludwig's angina.

A case is reported of a 38-year-old man presenting with early Ludwig's angina. It is difficult to differentiate superficial from deep infections of the face and neck by physical examination alone. The diagnosis of this condition with bedside soft tissue ultrasound of the face is described. Ludwig's angina is an uncommon infection of the deep tissues of the face and neck that usually evolves from more superficial infections such as dental abscesses.

[Complications of dental infections].

Infectious dental complications are quite frequent given the high incidence of tooth decay. Other pathologies not related to dental decay can cause mouth infectious such as periodontal infections, alveolitis, peri-coronitis of impacted wisdom tooth and secondary infection of dental fragments. Dental infection can be localised to apex (top of the root) or progress to soft and bony tissues surrounding the teeth. The most frequent germs involved in these infections are generally the same as saprophyte buccal flora but are often associated to other anaerobic germs. The following complications will

Examination of external apical root resorption with scanning electron microscopy.

UNLABELLED: External apical root resorption may be evident histologically but not visible radiographically until it is advanced. If working length is determined without considering this resorption, overinstrumentation or overfilling may occur. OBJECTIVE: This study used scanning electron microscopy to examine the appearance and to compare the incidence of external apical root resorption in 40 teeth with differing pulpal and periapical diagnoses. STUDY DESIGN: After extraction, 46 roots were sectioned horizontally 6 mm from the anatomic apex and prepared for scanning electron microscopy exami

Infection-induced transient remission of idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura.

In 2 cases of idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura a transient increase in platelet count was observed during and following infectious episodes. This association which is in contrast to the previously reported aggravating effect of infection on immune thrombocytopenia may be of rather frequent occurrence, being overlooked, however, because of lack of relevant clinical manifestations.

Management of rapidly progressing periopical pathologies: a case report.

Dentists often treat swellings from odontogenic periapical pathologies. One management option involves immediate treatment with antibiotics, followed by surgical intervention. We report a clinical case in which an 8-year-old patient sought care for such a lesion and received pharmacological therapy alone. The lesion expanded into multiple facial spaces approximating the ocular organ and other vital cranial structures. Eventual treatment of the lesion required a CT-scan, followed by an intubated general anesthetic, incision and drainage, extraction of the involved dentition and an overnight hos

Mortality associated with cervicofacial necrotizing fasciitis.

Cervicofacial necrotizing fasciitis is a rare infection but still occurs and carries a mortality rate up to 60%. It is a polymicrobial infection that is characterized by diffuse necrosis of fascial planes and subcutaneous tissues. Diagnosing early stages of cervicofacial necrotizing fasciitis in relationship to other soft tissue infections of odontogenic origin is difficult and leads to less aggressive treatment with resulting increased morbidity and mortality. To prevent this significant mortality and morbidity associated with cervicofacial necrotizing fasciitis early presentation, recognitio

Gene expression profile and pathogenicity of biofilm-forming Prevotella intermedia strain 17.

BACKGROUND: Prevotella intermedia (P. intermedia), a gram-negative, black-pigmented anaerobic rod, has been implicated in the development of chronic oral infection. P. intermedia strain 17 was isolated from a chronic periodontitis lesion in our laboratory and described as a viscous material producing strain. The stock cultures of this strain still maintain the ability to produce large amounts of viscous materials in the spent culture media and form biofilm-like structures. Chemical analyses of this viscous material showed that they were mainly composed of neutral sugars with mannose constituti

Chronic periodontitis with multiple risk factor syndrome: a case report.

OBJECTIVE: Multiple risk factor syndrome is a clustering of cardiovascular risk factors, such as diabetes, dyslipidemia, hypertension, and obesity associated epidemiologically with insulin resistance. This report describes the clinical course of a patient suffering from severe periodontitis with multiple risk factor syndrome, and discusses the association between periodontal infection and systemic health. METHODS: The patient had a history of type 2 diabetes, dyslipidemia, and hypertension for over 10 years. At baseline, her hemoglobin A1 c was 8.1%. However, she had no diabetic complications

Different treatment outcomes of two intruded permanent incisors--a case report.

Intrusive luxation involves the displacement of the tooth apically into the alveolar socket. This type of injury represents a very complex wound, involving disruption of the marginal gingival seal, alveolar bone, periodontal ligament fibers, cementum and the neuro-vascular supply to the pulp, which results in severely compromised healing and possible complications. The case presented is a report of a 60-year-old lady who fell and intruded her two maxillary central incisors. The healing outcomes of the two central incisors were markedly different from each other even though they sustained simil

A therapeutic oxygen carrier isolated from Arenicola marina decreased P. gingivalis induced inflammation and tissue destruction.

The control of inflammation and infection is crucial for periodontal wound healing and regeneration. M101, an oxygen carrier derived from Arenicola marina, was tested for its anti-inflammatory and anti-infectious potential based on its anti-oxidative and tissue oxygenation properties. In vitro, no cytotoxicity was observed in oral epithelial cells (EC) treated with M101. M101 (1 g/L) reduced significantly the gene expression of pro-inflammatory markers such as TNF-α, NF-κΒ and RANKL in P. gingivalis-LPS stimulated and P. gingivalis-infected EC. The proteome array revealed significant down-regu

Precise Strain Tuning of PtPdRhNi Nanozyme Boosts Multi-Pathogen and Multi-Model Antibacterial Therapy.

Nanozymes are emerging antimicrobial agents that catalyze reactive oxygen species to eliminate pathogenic threats; however, their ability to combat multidrug-resistant infections remains limited by catalytic efficiency, substrate affinity and instability. Herein, we report a new strategy incorporating Ni into ultrathin PtPdRh nanosheets to engineer lattice strain for enhancing substrate affinity and boosting enzyme-mimicking catalytic activity. The PtPdRhNi nanozyme achieves a catalytic efficiency (Kcat/Km = 2.05 × 106 m-1 s-1), 56.5-fold higher than PtPdRh and maintains over 90% activity afte
