CT appearances of abdominal tuberculosis.

The purpose of this article is to review and illustrate the spectrum of computed tomography (CT) appearances of abdominal tuberculosis. Tuberculosis can affect any organ or tissue in the abdomen, and can be mistaken for other inflammatory or neoplastic conditions. The most common sites of tuberculosis in the abdomen include lymph nodes, genitourinary tract, peritoneal cavity and gastrointestinal tract. The liver, spleen, biliary tract, pancreas and adrenals are rarely affected, but are more likely in HIV-seropositive patients and in miliary tuberculosis. This article should alert the radiologi

[A case of perforative peritonitis complicated with lung and intestinal severe tuberculosis].

A 27-year-old man was admitted to our hospital in September 18, 2000, complaining of fever, cough, appetite loss and body weight loss. He was diagnosed as advanced lung tuberculosis, because of chest X-ray findings and positive acid-fast bacilli in his sputum. He was administrated rifampicin (RFP), isoniazid (INH) and ethambutol (EB). Two days after starting treatment he complained of abdominal pain and the signs of perforating peritonitis. Emergency laparotomy was performed and we observed multiple ulcers and a perforation of ileum. We resected a part of distal ileum and ascending colon and m

[Errors and difficulties in the diagnosis and management of acute and chronic abdomen in children].

The authors are reviewing on a lot of 2844 cases between 1996 and 2000 the difficult problems of differential diagnosis between acute surgical abdomen in children and intestinal tuberculosis, abdominal tumors and inflammatory diseases such as acute osteomielitis. They are presenting 13 particular cases in which the acute abdomen diagnosis was difficult or even omitted.

[Abdominal tuberculosis in childhood: the clinical manifestations].

The authors reviewed the histories of 133 patients with abdominal tuberculosis in Instituto Nacional de Salud del Niño (Children's Hospital), Lima, Perú, between 1989 and 1991. We found morbidity higher in scholars (67.4%). Weight lost were present in all cases and malaise in 95.3%, abdominal distension in 83.72% and abdominal pain in 79.06%. Anaemia in 76.06%, ratio albumin/globulin were altered in 74.41% leukocytosis in 67.44%. Evidence of tuberculosis on chest X-ray were detected only in 62.5%.

Rhodotorula species peritonitis in a liver transplant recipient: a case report.

A 62-year-old man with a six months status post liver transplant due to hepatitis C infection, was admitted with ascites and pyrexia of unknown origin. Despite extensive investigations, his fever remained undiagnosed, so he was started empirically on anti tuberculous agents, ganciclovir and trimethoprim/sulfa. The liver function deteriorated and a liver biopsy showed evidence of allograft rejection for which the patient was started on systemic steroids. Later, yeast grew from the ascitic fluid, which was identified as Rhodotorula species. The draining peritoneal catheter was removed and the pa

Disseminated lymphatic tuberculosis in acquired immunodeficiency syndrome: computed tomography findings.

There is an increased frequency of disseminated tuberculosis in patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). The authors reviewed 6 thoracic and 10 abdominal computed tomography scans from 11 patients who had AIDS and disseminated tuberculosis. All scans demonstrated multiple, large, mediastinal or retroperitoneal lymph nodes, or both; low-density centers within enlarged nodes were identified in seven patients (63%). The scans also showed a diffuse miliary pattern (three patients), pericardial effusion (three patients), mild hepatomegaly (six patients), moderate splenomegaly (seven

Liver abscess in the tropics: experience in the University Hospital, Kuala Lumpur.

We reviewed 204 cases of liver abscess seen between 1970 and 1985. Ninety were found to be amoebic, 24 pyogenic and one tuberculous. The cause of the abscesses in the remaining 89 patients was not established. The patients were predominantly male, Indians, and in the 30-60 age group. The majority of patients presented with fever and right hypochondrial pain. The most common laboratory findings were leucocytosis, hypoalbuminaemia and an elevated serum alkaline phosphatase. Amoebic abscesses were mainly solitary while pyogenic abscesses were mainly multiple. Complications were few in our patient

Tuberculous radiculomyelitis presenting as urinary retention in a child with Down's syndrome.

Tuberculous radiculomyelitis (TBRM) is an uncommon complication of TB meningitis. The authors report the case of a 10-year-old Asian girl with trisomy 21, who presented with acute urinary retention and fever. She was initially treated for a urinary tract infection. After an acute neurological deterioration she was found to have evidence of TB meningitis with TBRM. She developed acute hydrocephalus requiring ventriculo-peritoneal shunt. She was treated with quadruple antituberculous therapy and high dose intravenous dexamethasone. She needed tracheostomy with continuous positive airway pressure

Abdominal tuberculosis: utility of laparoscopy in the correct diagnosis.

INTRODUCTION: Abdominal tuberculosis is one of the most prevalent form of extra-pulmonary disease, and the diagnosis is difficult because of non-specific clinical features. METHOD: We presented a case of a Tunisian woman with cough, nausea, decreased appetite and pelvic-abdominal pain. CT scan showed peritoneal thickening, peritoneal tiny nodules and enlarged mesenteric lymph nodes ascitic fluid. Sputum analysis was negative. Abdominal paracentesis was performed, and no malignant cell was detected. The Ziehl staining revealed a negativity for acid-fast bacilli. RESULTS: Diagnostic laparoscop

Tumoral calcinosis, calciphylaxis, hyperparathyroidism and tuberculosis in a dialysis patient.

Tumoral calcinosis and calciphylaxis are uncommon but severe complications in uremic patients. They occur generally after long-term hemodialysis (HD) treatment explained by advanced secondary hyperparathyroidism and longstanding high calcium phosphorus product (Ca × P). Other factors such granulomatous diseases may worsen the calcium phosphate homeostasis alterations. We report a young male patient treated by HD for 6 years who developed tuberculosis in addition to tumoral calcinosis and calciphylaxis.

Disseminated peritoneal tuberculosis mimicking advanced-stage endodermal sinus tumor: a case report.

It is well known that peritoneal tuberculosis may mimic advanced-stage epithelial ovarian carcinoma because of similar clinical, radiologic, and laboratory findings. However, disseminated peritoneal tuberculosis mimicking advanced-stage endodermal sinus tumor (ESS) has not been reported previously. An 18-year-old nulliparous woman came with the complaint of pelvic pain and weight loss. Imaging studies demonstrated that she had multiple peritoneal implants and left adnexial mass. Also, laboratory studies showed elevated CA125 and alpha fetoprotein levels suggesting an initial diagnosis of ESS.
