Hostile personality characteristics of duodenal ulcer patients.

The aggression profile of patients with Duodenal Peptic Ulcer (DPU) (n = 39) was assessed by means of five self-rating scales (FAF 1, FAF 3, PDS-Extp, PDS-Intp, PDS-Dom) and was compared with a matched normal control group (n = 39) and a psychiatric outpatient sample (n = 67). The DPU group scored significantly higher than normal controls on aggressive excitability and extrapunitiveness (trend in the same direction for potential aggressions), and significantly lower than the psychiatric group on potential aggressions and intropunitiveness. Contrary to expectations, DPU patients did not differ

An epidemiological study of histrionic personality disorder.

In conjunction with the Epidemiological Catchment Area (ECA) survey conducted in Baltimore, MD, a two-stage probability sample of community subjects was developed with a full psychiatric examination employing DSM-III criteria. This report details the observations on those subjects diagnosed with the DSM-III diagnosis Histrionic Personality Disorder. The results indicate that this condition can be diagnosed reliably and that it is a valid construct. It has a prevalence of 2.1% in a general population. Males and females are equally affected, suggesting that prior reports of an increased prevalen…

Comorbidity of bulimia nervosa and personality disorder.

Thirty patients meeting DSM-III-R criteria for bulimia nervosa with at least three bingeing episodes a week were compared with 30 age- and sex-matched controls on DSM-III personality measures. The bulimic patients were more likely to display cluster B (histrionic, narcissistic, antisocial, and borderline) personality abnormalities (odds ratio 15.0) and cluster C (avoidant, dependent, compulsive, and passive-aggressive) personality abnormalities (odds ratio 4.3) than were the community controls. This study supports the finding that personality disorder is a possible risk factor for bulimia.

Some personality variables in functional neurological disorders.

Patients with spasmodic torticollis, writer's cramp and the Gilles de la Tourette Syndrome (GTS) were given rating scales to assess personality dimensions, especially hostility and obsessionality. The data have been compared with age and sex matched controls. Significant differences arose, especially for hostility for the GTS and writer's cramp patients, whereas those with spasmodic torticollis do not differ from controls.

Personality characteristics of sex offenders: a review.

Research utilizing psychometric instruments to assess personality characteristics of sex offenders is reviewed. A methodological shortcoming of this research is the frequent use of the MMPI. It is argued that this test was originally developed as a measure of types of psychopathology and has not been validated as a personality test. Studies using tests other than the MMPI have seldom controlled for institutionalization and impression management. Further, little attention has been paid to criminal history, making it difficult to conclude that the current offense is representative of past behavi…

Trait and behavioral prototypes of personality disorder.

The author reports a survey of the clinical features used by psychiatrists to diagnose personality disorders. The purpose was to develop definitions of these disorders and to identify behavioral features that could be used as diagnostic criteria. Psychiatrists rated trait and behavioral items describing each disorder for the degree to which they were prototypical of the disorder. Judgments of the prototypical quality of traits and behaviors were found to be equally reliable. Given that behavioral criteria require less inferential judgment, subsequent revisions of criteria to assess personality…

Life events and personality characteristics in depression.

Evidence from many sources supports the view that stressful life events might be relevant for the onset and development of depression, but their pathogenic role is still only poorly understood. One approach in trying to elucidate the role of life events in depression, might be to study them from a multi-factorial point of view, taking into account the vulnerability of the individual experiencing them. As part of such an investigation, 138 depressed patients with a mean age of 45 years have participated in a study of life events and personality traits. In particular, it was tested whether aspec…

Personality style differences in visual search performance.

The present study continues the examination of the personality styles in normal populations that have been described in the clinical literature. Earlier work has focused on behavioral, attitudinal, and cognitive components of the personality styles. The present study extends our exploration of the cognitive domain by examining the performance of different personality groups on a visual scanning task. Hysterics searched a stimulus array for letter targets at a mean rate of 0.04 +/- SD 0.177 seconds per unit of information, which was slower than the control rate of 0.0225 +/- SD 0.0078 seconds. …

[Personality and the social significance of hirsutism].

Cyproterone acetate treatment was applied with good success by the authors to 52 patients with hirsutism. Yet, the patients' confidence in the medicament was negatively affected by recurrence of symptoms during intervals of discontinued medication. However, effective help can be given to such women to get to grips with their own psychic conflicts by disclosing to them and discussing with them those environmental factors due to which insecurity was built up in them regarding their sexual role. Such psychotherapeutic approach will back up pharmacotherapy and mitigate regression during intervals.

Pattern A personality and noise-induced vasoconstriction.

A perplexing question about noise-induced hearing loss is why some persons seem to be more affected by high intensity noise than others. Haw … different from Pattern B males. This difference possibly resulted from the use of a test to assess personality type which was intended for use with male subjects. The authors conclude there is strong evidence to suggest that being prone to stress in the presence of noise is a contributing factor to noise-induced hearing loss.

The hysterical personality--I. The healthy hysteric.

This paper examines the meaning and validity of 'hysterical personality disorders'. Theories and descriptions of hysterical personalities have been conflicting and often mutually incompatible, leading to a vague and imprecise nosology. No generally accepted specific inclusion criteria or follow-up studies are available; consequently, the diagnosis of 'hysterical personality disorder' has reflected adaptive as well as maladaptive traits. This paper critically examines the healthy dimension of Lazare's continuum of personality pathologies exhibiting hysterical traits. The continuum, in an attemp…

Briquet's syndrome, hysterical personality, and the MMPI.

The authors compared the MMPI scores of 29 inpatients diagnosed by other authors as having hysterical personality and 21 outpatients diagnosed by the authors as having Briquet's syndrome. The two groups of patients differed significantly in age, on the MMPI lie scale, and on the MMPI hypochondriasis scale but not on any of the other MMPI scales. The authors discuss the implications of these findings for further defining the differences and similarities between hysterical personality and Briquet's syndrome.

Personality factors in selection and flight proficiency.

Personality development is a dynamic process involving life forces, instinct drives, growth processes, life stresses, reactions to significant persons, both in and out of the family, and reactions to the environment in general, along with the mastery of methods and techniques for coping in solving problems and in providing for the satisfaction of one's needs. The love and fear of flying and the motivation and conflicts in flying involve many personality factors which deserve careful evaluation in selection of pilot and other flight personnel. These personality factors, variations, and traits a…
