[Social representations of Mexican pregnant teenagers about the puerperal care, lactation, and newborn care].

BACKGROUND: Puerperal care and feeding of the newborn are guided by entrenched cultural meanings between women, so it is important to know and identify how they are acquired and perpetuated. Regarding this knowledge, the social representations that Mexican pregnant teenagers have about puerperium, lactation and newborn care were studied. METHODS: An interpretative study was made based on principles of the theory of social representations. Interviews were conducted to obtain information from 30 Mexican adolescents who attended prenatal care at the gynecological obstetrics area in a second-leve

The Rest of the Story: A Qualitative Study of Complementing Standardized Assessment Data with Informal Interviews with Older Patients and Families.

BACKGROUND: While standardized health assessments capture valuable information on patients' demographic and diagnostic characteristics, health conditions, and physical and mental functioning, they may not capture information of most relevance to individual patients and their families. Given that patients and their informal caregivers are the experts on that patient's unique context, it is important to ensure they are able to convey all relevant personal information to formal healthcare providers so that high-quality, patient-centered care may be delivered. This study aims to identify informati

Unanswered Questions: Hereditary breast and gynecological cancer risk assessment in transgender adolescents and young adults.

Transgender (TG) individuals have higher rates of mortality associated with cancer diagnoses, in part due to avoidance of gender-assigned cancer screenings resulting in later stages at diagnosis. Knowledge about the risks of breast or gynecological cancer in TG and nonbinary (NB) persons receiving gender-affirming hormone therapy is limited. Even less information exists regarding the subset of individuals with genetic predisposition for these malignancies. We performed a retrospective literature review of studies from the last 15 years on breast cancer rates and identified risks in TG persons.

Early identification and linkage to care of persons with chronic hepatitis B virus infection--three U.S. sites, 2012-2014.

In the United States, an estimated 0.8-1.4 million persons are living with chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. Among these persons, as many as 70% were born in countries of Asia, Africa, or other regions where HBV is moderately or highly endemic (hepatitis B surface antigen [HBsAg] prevalence ≥2%). HBV-associated cirrhosis and liver cancer are major health problems for these populations. Most persons with HBV were infected at birth or during early childhood and are asymptomatic until advanced liver disease develops. To address these concerns, CDC recommends HBsAg testing for all persons

Psychological correlates of problematic short video use risk profiles: A latent profile and network analysis.

BACKGROUND: The rapid rise of short video platforms has raised growing concerns about problematic short video use (PSVU). However, most existing research has adopted variable-centered approaches, with limited attention to potential heterogeneity among users with different levels of PSVU. In addition, little is known about how psychological correlates vary across PSVU risk profiles. METHODS: To address this gap, the present study employed latent profile analysis (LPA) and network analysis to identify PSVU risk profiles, characterize their psychological features, and explore associations among

Experiences of predictive genetic testing in inherited motor neuron disease: Findings from a qualitative interview study.

Predictive genetic testing is increasingly available for individuals with a heightened risk of motor neuron disease (MND). However, little is known about how they decide whether or not to get tested, and how they experience this process. This paper reports findings from a constructivist grounded theory-informed interview study with 24 family members of people with identified or suspected inherited MND (iMND). Fourteen did not know their genetic status, and nine had decided to have predictive testing, of whom six tested positive for the pathogenic gene variant identified in their family and thr

Factors that influence the use of community assets by people with physical disabilities: results of participatory mapping in Envigado, Colombia.

BACKGROUND: Disability is an evolving concept that results from the complex interaction between a person with an impairment and the context in which he/she lives. There is limited understanding on the types, access and use of community assets valuable for people with disabilities, and the role of contextual factors in Colombia. Our goal with this work was to identify the factors at the levels of the socio-ecological framework, and their interaction, that influence the use of community assets among people with physical disabilities and community stakeholders in Envigado, Colombia. METHODS: Usi

Personalized brain stimulation based on brain oscillations: A systematic review of MEG- and EEG-informed transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS).

OBJECTIVE: Transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) provides promising evidence as a technology to modulate brain oscillations. Individualized brain oscillation measures from magnetoencephalography (MEG) or electroencephalography (EEG) (M/EEG) can optimize frequency, location (montage), and timing of tACS. This systematic review aims to comprehensively characterize the parameter space and outcomes of M/EEG-informed personalized tACS interventions. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review of the literature up to January 2024, per PRISMA guidelines. The pre-registered search strateg

Incidence Rates of COVID-19-Associated Hospitalization and Risk Factors for Severe Disease Among American Indian and Alaska Native Persons in the Southwest USA and Alaska.

INTRODUCTION: COVID-19 causes significant morbidity in the USA, particularly among American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) persons. Estimates of COVID-19 burden among AI/AN communities are needed to identify health outcome disparities and inform prevention strategies, but under-ascertainment of AI/AN status in national data may result in underestimation of COVID-19 disease burden. METHODS: Surveillance for acute respiratory illness was conducted among AI/AN persons at eight healthcare facilities in Arizona and Alaska to identify COVID-19-associated hospitalizations and outpatient visits. Prediction of the mechanism of suicide among Minnesota residents using data from the Minnesota violent death reporting system (MNVDRS).

BACKGROUND: Suicide remains a major public health problem, and firearms are used in approximately half of all such incidents. This study sought to predict the occurrence of suicide specifically by firearm, as opposed to any other means of suicide, in order to help inform possible life-saving interventions. METHODS: This study involved data from the Minnesota Violent Death Reporting System. Models evaluated whether data beyond basic demographics generated increased prediction accuracy. Models were built using random forests, logistic regression and data imputation. Models were evaluated for pr
