Nicotine dependence and psychiatric and substance use disorder comorbidities among American Indians/Alaska Natives: findings from the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions.

BACKGROUND: American Indians and Alaska Natives (AI/ANs) have high rates of tobacco use compared to the general population. AI/ANs also have elevated rates of psychiatric and substance use disorders associated with nicotine dependence. However, very few studies have examined the comorbidity between nicotine dependence and psychiatric and substance use disorders within this population. METHODS: This study analyzes the comorbidity of lifetime nicotine dependence with both current and lifetime psychiatric disorders and substance use disorders in a nationally representative sample of 701 AI/AN wo

The psychiatric review of symptoms: a screening tool for family physicians.

The psychiatric review of symptoms is a useful screening tool for identifying patients who have psychiatric disorders. The approach begins with a mnemonic encompassing the major psychiatric disorders: depression, personality disorders, substance abuse disorders, anxiety disorders, somatization disorder, eating disorders, cognitive disorders and psychotic disorders. For each category, an initial screening question is used, with a positive response leading to more detailed diagnostic questions. Useful interviewing techniques include transitioning from one subject to another rather than abruptly

Full spectrum of mental disorders linked with childhood residential mobility.

Although links between childhood residential mobility and subsequently increased risks of psychopathology have been well documented, associations across the full spectrum of psychiatric disorders are unknown. We conducted a population-based study of all 1,439,363 persons born in Denmark during 1971-1997 to investigate relationships between childhood cross-municipality residential moves from year of birth to age 14 years and the development of a range of psychiatric disorders from mid-adolescence to early middle age. We examined: (1) Any substance misuse disorders; specifically alcohol misuse,

An overview of women seeking substance abuse treatment in Oklahoma.

Current studies of neurocognitive function in alcoholics are generally restricted to a relatively small subsample of persons seeking treatment. Subjects are typically excluded from study if reporting signs or symptoms of possibly confounding disorders such as comorbid psychiatric disorders, medical, or neurologic disorders. Thus, the question arises as to whether those individuals who actually participate in these reported studies are representative of the larger population of unselected persons. Studies of women are particularly subject to this concern due to higher rates of comorbid medical

An examination of psychiatric comorbidities as a function of gender and substance type within an inpatient substance use treatment program.

BACKGROUND: There are elevated rates of comorbid psychiatric disorders among individuals with substance dependence; however, little research examines these rates within inpatient settings, particularly in relation to gender and type of substance. The current study aimed to fill this gap. METHOD: 465 patients (71.4% male) were recruited from an inpatient substance use treatment facility from 2006 to 2009. These patients were interviewed and diagnosed using the Structure Clinical Interview for DSM-IV and the Diagnostic Interview for Personality Disorders. RESULTS: 60.6% of patients with substa

Psychiatric disorders of the puerperium in South African women of Nguni origin. A pilot study.

The clinical impression gained from symptoms exhibited by Zulu and Xhosa obstetric patients referred to the Department of Psychiatry, King Edward VIII Hospital, Durban, was that certain of the psychiatric disorders presented in a different form to those observed in hospitals serving other population groups. Opinions differ as to the aetiology and relationship of disorders of the puerperium to other psychiatric syndromes with controversial hypotheses referring to both the aetiology and the symptomatology. Firstly, the disorders are considered to be a reaction to specific psychological or biolog

The authors examine the associated psychiatric diagnoses of 100 consecutive patients with conversion symptoms without organic disease. More than 80% of the subjects present a coexisting psychiatric disorder. The most frequent are affective disorder, personality disorder, other "neurotic" disorder and substance abuse. The authors conclude that conversion should be considered as a nonspecific symptom.

DSM-III personality disorder diagnoses in a nonpatient sample. Demographic correlates and comorbidity.

Seven hundred ninety-seven first-degree relatives of normal controls and patients with a variety of psychiatric disorders were interviewed with the Diagnostic Interview Schedule and the Structured Interview for DSM-III Personality Disorders. Slightly more than one sixth of the sample received a personality disorder (PD) diagnosis, and of those with a PD, almost one fourth had more than one. The most prevalent diagnoses were mixed, passive-aggressive, antisocial, histrionic, and schizotypal PD. The demographic correlates and frequency of Axis I disorders in individuals with each specific PD wer

Personality disorders and its association with anxiety and depression among patients of severe acne: A cross-sectional study from Eastern India.

BACKGROUND: In many patients, emotional stress may exacerbate acne. Psychological problems such as social phobias, low self-esteem, or depression may also occur as a result of acne. The presence of acne may have some negative effect on the quality of life, self-esteem, and mood of the affected patients. While some studies have been undertaken about anxiety, depression, and personality patterns in patients with acne, only a few studies have been done to identify specific personality disorders in patients with acne. Furthermore, there is a dearth of data regarding the effect of personality disor
